But potential buyers just can’t see beyond the dated décor and floral granny wallpaper. Property expert Sofie Allsopp says the house is living in the past and comes up with a knockout design plan that includes a neutral palette and some impressive custom finishes.

Unsellables - Wallpaper Woes - Season 3 - Episode 8
#Unsellables
The daughter is an absolute sweetheart. The dinning room and the living room came out great.
I’ve been binge watching these shows and I can’t believe how lazy this homeowner is! I feel for the crew dealing with that.
The daughter is expert at handling her mother's passive aggressiveness. Wonder how long she's had to do that.
But when she said shes proud of herself... for sticking tape to carpet tiles.. smh
Thinking maybe the mom is hoping one of the builders would ask her for a date......
I took an oddly instant dislike to the mother. Nothing I can put my finger on, but it's there.
Probably since birth.
Mmmm, how old is the daughter? Know that and you have your answer.
Thank you for taking down the wall paper. In other videos I’ve seen painting over it, to me that is lazy and if I bought a house like that the first thing I would do is take the wallpaper off
I see a theme in all of these....I want to sell but I don't want to lift a finger.
Seems like it is. Definitely the impression that I get too.
Don't want to do the work yourself either hire someone or lower the price so a flipper or someone willing to do the work will buy it.
@@builtontherockhomestead9390 Totally but these people want top dollar without putting the effort.
@@vaderladyl I want someone to give me a million dollars but it's not going to happen.
Plus they are delusional about how a buyer is going to love their style no matter how weird it is.
The kitchen was lovely afterwards, just shortening the breakfast bar and adding the storage unit was a game changer for the room, once that horrendous wallpaper had gone!
The breakfast bar was strange. Who wants to eat facing a wall a foot from your face?
ONE BATHROOM!?? Only 1?
THAT'S what the addition should have been years ago.
If only the wallpaper would come off that easy in my house! At least 3 layers on EVERY wall!
Ouch!!
@@ShastaAnn the lady that lived here wallpapered the whole town. There were loads of rolls of wallpaper on the shelf in her closet.
@@kebert2thumbsup Well... At least if you have those old rolls, you could make some eclectic wallpaper collage art pieces to sell on Etsy.
@@hauntedshadowslegacy2826 they were in the downstairs apt. Idk if the new tenants got rid of them?
Start to pull or steam it off. Then study what you can declutter.
I think it still needs at least a powder room. Few houses in nice neighborhoods have only one “toilet and sink”.
One bathroom would be a big turnoff for anyone nowdays
Smart, friendly daughter. But the mother is testy and clueless!!
I would have done the addition as a new kitchen and used the plumbing in the old kitchen to put in another bathroom,
Yup!
Too much money to spend for this show. They want their expenditures to be minimal.
Clare, Your idea would have been brilliant. Not ONLY have a 2nd bathroom, but a laundry room or laundry closet as well. That "game table" would have been an ideal breakfast table in the bigger kitchen.
Great idea. But it would take more than $5,000 and 2 days. The homeowner should have done the same long ago, but she has no taste and about the same sense God gave a guinea hen. And she spends all her time working on her body rather than her home.
Great idea!
You walk into the sitting room, then another sitting room and yet third sitting room - YIKES! Replacing one with an office space would have been more practical. There were too many competing blues in the TV space. The homeowner was right about the blue backsplash, it looked so out of place especially with all the lime green ( I forgot how popular that green was 10 years ago). I thought the dining room lacked a unified theme/look.
Why do they need that sad eat-in counter that is taking up space when there is a kitchen table in sight? I've watched 4 of these makeovers and this one is my least favorite. The homeowner was bristling against every suggestion
Agreed.
I think the house they look at sold because there was two bathrooms 😁
1800 square feet and only one bathroom - that's a no for me.
Why do Americans need 3 sitting areas? But no storage for shoes, coates and bags in the entryway? 🤔
Even more annoying, 3 or 4 places to eat. Dining room, breakfast nook, kitchen island bar, patio table at a minimum.
@@Mulberrysmile 😂 and a few bathrooms... But I wonder in winter do they walk with wet coats and boots through the house upstairs to their walk in closet to put everything in?
No winter where I live, so coat closets aren't necessary. Adults gather in the living room, children and their friends in the family room. Family eat in the breakfast room, and the dining room is for dinner with guests. We like space. Shrug.
Remember these are show houses. This isn’t really how people live in the house. It’s supposed to show off the space, not actually how people will really end up using it.
@@Arazhul12 - Exactly...it snows in New York and unless there is a double entry or hall closet and place for boots when you come in from the "wet", the layout is just not functional. So many things this family could have done to make the house more sellable.
Hey now, the reason why we got so lucky with our house was the horrible wallpaper. It was obvious that despite the hot real estate market nobody wanted to touch it. The house was structurally solid, new heating system, no issues, great neighborhood but every single room, with the exception of the kitchen and the full bath was covered in hideous wallpaper and the decor was seriously questionable. I saw past all that.
I’m looking for a house now, and I’m hoping to find a Diamond in the rough. I don’t care if there’s wallpaper in every room. I just want a good house with a decent size. 👌🏼 also, I have experience removing wallpaper from my first house. It took FOREVER!! But it was well worth it when I was done.
You were lucky the house we bought also had seven layers of wallpaper in one room - we saw the kid grow up through the wallpaper and there was wallpaper in the kitchen and hideous borders in the bathrooms plus once the borders were removed - Lo and behold a previous border had been painted over !!! Not to mention carpet in both the bathroom and the wc. The carpet was the first thing to exit. 😂😂😂😂. But it was a bargain and we ended up with something we liked.
I also thought that THREE sitting areas/living rooms right next to each other was weird. Should have made one of them into something else imo. Dining room looks so much better.
I do not like the floorplan either.
I thought maybe a downstairs master bedroom. Would be great for someone who needs one floor living .
The price was a little high considering most people would be trying to figure out how to add another bathroom.
Why did they spend money to add yet another sitting area, but not a second bathroom?
Because a sitting room is cheap. A bathroom starts at $10,000,, depending on whether you can hook into existing plumbing or not.
@@MrsEJV yup. 11 for,ours.
Because they can't build a bathroom from scratch for under 5k in two days, sweetie, lol.
Those are not comparable, cost-wise.
@@Kevin-sm8pn I think she meant why spend the money to convert the garage to a family room rather than spending the money to add another bathroom. These days a three bedroom house needs more than one bathroom. They already had a place to sit.
If you routinely do updates in your rooms (paint color, drapes/no drapes, furniture being moved around, removing furniture pieces that your family has outgrown or no longer uses, etc.) you end up not having to do so much updating at once right before selling. Because as these ladies found, all the updates you do yourself are going to seem overwhelming and you will freeze and not be able to prioritize and get things done. And you will end up doing nothing and living in outdated, tired surroundings. One thing about this house is three eating areas (we've seen this ourselves in other houses), outdated wall papers, and furniture that is too large for the room. Often, leather poufy couches are too large for rooms, and especially L-configured leather, dark sofas are like a sunken hulk of a ship marooned in your living room. Do not buy them. Go with sofas in lighter colors and sleeker shapes even with a few inches off the floor to create a feeling of lightness and airiness. Those cushy old leather or fake leather sofas really SUCK. They have no support, it's difficult to get up from them. They are just too big and too ugly. Before shopping for a sofa MEASURE your living room or the room it is to go in and see exactly how much space you have available. Or you may get a horrid shock when you get the sofa delivered and it's too big, too dark, too overwhelming, and does not allow you to walk around it with ease. Smaller sofas are also easier to move around to make your room feel newer without spending a dime. When it was time for spring cleaning, my Mom would routinely move the furniture around. It gave us a "new" living room without costing a dime. You can't do that with overly large, L-shaped sofas -- they often only fit one way in a room and it may cause you to have to walk around the entire piece to enter the seating area.
I totally agree! I think I can explain why people like those huge cushy sofas: someone likes to slob out in them and binge watch TV. My mom would do the same "move the furniture around" routine. We'd go to school and come home to a whole new arrangement. My dad kept the house in good repair and they painted regularly. That's what you have to do when you live for many years in the same house. Seems like most of the people on this show don't want to do any work, and just want to move to a pretty, everything works house. But their bad habits will follow them and soon they'll be living in the same old run-down ugly outdated house again.
I inherited the house that I grew up in and it’s funny what is 16 year old house and recently a house down the street your bedrooms have as many bathrooms as beautiful outdoor garden space to a lot of people that’s just work I went into an open house in literally the house looks like it did in the 60s no updated in the bathroom no update in the kitchen nothing it was horrible lots of cheap wood panel. Who surprised they got as much as they did with me my house went up in value! My house was designed by my dad who is an engineer and thought about some very cool things that nobody else has the big our house really nice never when we have a walkout basement and he was smart enough to dig the hell out so we have a view out the basement so there’s full size windows in the back which makes our basement very light and open and then after he passed away my sister came in and re-designed it so my mother could tolerate living here it’s like a completely new house didn’t change the house footprint at all Good design and engineering are wonderful from step one
one bathroom and three bedroom no way 😵
the mom's neck...
And where’s her forehead???
I feel awful but this is all I could see. It’s a bad fake tan or bronzer job and possibly a poorly executed neck lift. I’m embarrassed for her tbh.
Body building body.
Man, she is BUFF, but it's time to cut the hair. All you see is her nose and the fact that she's got a very low hairline. Short bangs might help. My mother always said long straight hair on older women just ages them, and she was right. This woman is living in the past with the long hair...and the home decor.
Most of us, as we age, hide the worst that nature gave us. Why didn't this lady. She seems way too proud of her overall body...but that one thing ruins it all..
Sofie Allsopp (the presenter) is the younger sister of Kirstie Allsopp, who co-presents a property-search show in UK
And Kirstie is a bitch. She slapped her co-presenter across the face once ' in jest'. Imagine if roles were reversed.
OMG! the 80's exploded
The thing that I like about these shows is that they show you how to update your home without having to spend a lot of money.
Loose the wall paper and breakfast bar. I'd look at extra cupboards in place of the breakfast bar. Light colours on the walls and get rid of the hideous furniture. Money should of been spent on an extra bathroom not extra, unused living areas.
the comp houses's kitchen made my mouth water.
Honestly I like that black floral wallpaper in the original dining room. Probably wouldn't put it on every wall, but a feature wall or something would be nice imo. The kitchen/lounge wallpaper is pretty horrendous though.
Wallpaper is making such a comeback! At least its easier to remove nowadays
Nooooooo
Not that wallpaper, LOL
@@sableann4255 agreed!!
SOME wallpaper is making a comeback. Used in moderation. Certainly not whole entire rooms anymore. You can find contemporary accent wallpapers for dressing, at most, one whole wall in a given room. There are options for only wallpapering in certain segments with some wainscoting to break it up.
@@hauntedshadowslegacy2826 yep- i will do behind the bathroom mirrors. Couldnt imagine whole room covered.
Black wallpaper was actually good and had a lot of character, it just had to be styled right. I would not have a problem buying a house with such wallpaper.
Most other people would, though.
I see wallpaper as work, I would have not bought that house. The kitchen was, even with the wallpaper removed, not one I'd like to cook in.
I think the wallpaper was fun but it´s too strong for a house on the market.
I think wallpaper works if you never plan to move or you're willing to remove it when you're looking to sell the house. It's pretty specific and more people don't like wallpaper than do. When selling a house, it's about the potential buyers and what may appeal more to them, like neutrality where they don't feel like they have to do too much undoing someone's specific tastes.
For that much money I'd like more than one bathroom.
I actually like wallpaper, but that is a big turn off in a house you're considering because it takes so much work to change it. And a lot of people just HATE wallpaper, even the nice, expensive classy ones.
I actually really liked the black one
Yes! The black wallpaper was beautiful
I also thought the black one was beautiful.
My mom papered the large bathroom at our older home. It was like an undersea view. Black with a lot of aqua and pink, and lite greens, it really worked. Of course older houses in the south had a lot of wallpaper. Ours did too, but the bath was the only one outstanding. I loved it.
the dining room with black wallpaper would have looked stunning like a palatial tearoom if the heavy incompatible dark furniture were removed, an replaced with white table and chairs with an elegant and lightweight French provincial flavour, and the rug was a bright colour from the wallpaper, like rose or green. With a strong wallpaper, you have to work with it, not against it.
I actually did like this make over. I would have put the reading corner next to the other window and my shoe cabinet / bench at the first window and coat hangers opposite. It might not be so cute but it's realistic and usable. The "custom-built" entertainment center is actually Ikea with an little extra piece, but it's a good idea to personalize it a little bit.
The downstairs of this house has the strangest layout ! which is really hard to zone ! I still don’t like it , but it is better 👍🏻
379k 3 beds with ONE bathroom, seems a bit high to me. Must be the area that's pushing prices that way. I say that but the apartment I had in Santa Monica was tiny and pricey - I got a lot more for my money when I moved south-east.
its funny that they converted their garage into a family room yet they said they never use the family room they already had lol . . . I dont think the mom liked the makeover she said "its so. . . different" when asked if she liked it. she seemed slightly irritated haha
I got the same impression. I mean, the house looked WAY better afterwards. I am thinking maybe she was disappointed that her own tastes and attempt at decorating did not turn out as well. Not exactly jealous, but maybe she was a bit disappointed people did not like her choices or something. IDK.
Reesicup, I think the Mom is JUST a unhappy, miserably sad person. Wants her daughter to 'move-on,' yet then she WILL be alone. I pray she finds something to smile about. She should be grateful to have such a beautiful, well grounded daughter. Unfortunately some people are never happy with life.
If she wants to sell, she should be glad the house looks presentable.
The Willie Wonka room! 🤣
Now come on, who in the world tries to sell a house with black floral wallpaper?? That's gonna drive buyers away like a freaking cockroach! Seriously, black floral?? Smh..
It would also depend on the age of the house. If the house is from 1880, an antique, and someone is looking for an old house because they are older. To be honest, I know of one house in New York, it does belong to a semi retired actor & the walls in at least some of those rooms have wallpaper. One room has black floral & another has like a bronzy color wallpaper with a pattern.
I wish we could see her new house after she moved in lol
Why wants a breakfast bar where you sit facing a blank wall!
people wake up and look at their phones answer emails....watch the news on their phones .... eat cereal ...throw up in the sink (a coupla steps over).......do all people stand over the counter stand over the sink and eat?what about a place for the cook to eat ........ 2 stools work....its a 5,000$ budget .... $yah work with what ya$ got this is not a new build$
I thought the same thing and since this is in many videos and yours is the first person to question it, I thought maybe it was just me that didn't like the idea of staring at a wall.
Ya why not remove all of the bar and put a cute bistro set or put an outlet there and make a coffee and tea bar with some shelves above. I mean they already have so many places to sit in that house.🤔
Not me.
Music loud and annoying!!!
The entry way should have had a coat closet and an area to put away shoes when you have people over.
This is the second video that has 3 sitting areas???
We are looking to buy a house and I can say that I would not really buy a pretty house without another bathroom to spare!
This was made in the days before they put thousands of dollars into it and knocked out walls!
Was curious where the bathroom is located upstairs. At least a half bath is needed with two stories. My house was built in 1960. Originally had two full and one half bath. My sister is a good designer and without changing the footprint of the house i now have four full bathrooms. It can be done. Yes that was converted into a full bath it’s a tiny master bath but it’s all there and the big four-way bathroom it was the family bathroom upstairs Was split into two. One with a Jacuzzi tub the other one with a shower. If you have somebody who really knows her stuff that can be done and done fairly inexpensively basically very little on the plumbing all the plumbing attached into existing plumbing.
I am always astonished at how many owners figure they should get near 1/2 million, and let the next person do the work. It is one thing for 1-200KMAX, butif you have that kind of money coming in, PAY someone to do it.
they are SO nice to all owners
Awesome job again Sophie. The trolls on her are pathetic.
Wallpaper would make me walk away from a house.
Sh*t I have never seen so much wallpaper in just one house.
😂
"My design style is eclectic." That's what all people with ZERO taste claim.
similar to unemployed who are 'free lancing'.
Better a bad taste than no taste at all - lol!
I'm glad they kept the carpet and the dining table. Looked amazing.
I can't believe they spent $60 on duct taping carpet squares into a makeshift rug when they have two $25 Ikea rugs in the first sitting room 😂 😂 😂 the second sitting room also has an Ikea rug! Why not just buy yet another rug from Ikea instead of some DIY thing? Also, who need 3 sitting rooms???? Terrible use of space
I’m laughing because the daughter was def thinking the same thing as she was directed to say otherwise 💀
The cost of the duct tape and carpet squares could have been utilized elsewhere.
The mom seems to be leaning on the daughter - not especially healthy.
the house looks lovely even before make over. I think the 1 bathroom will turn people off.
The wallpaper is more maximalist style, not minimalist. Nothing wrong with that.
Need 2 bathrooms.
I have binge watched 4 episodes. I love the neutral colors and clean lines. I loathe the shade of green accents.
"Sold in only four months." That's a really long time. Where I live it'd be taken off the market and put back on a few months later. There are only a couple of weeks of interest and if you don't get a seller in that time period people won't look at it again.
One of our houses sold in two weeks and the other in 2 days.
I hear you. Fixer uppers in my townhouse community sell in two weeks, three tops. Non-fixers are gone within the week.
The background noise drives me crazy. Bye!
I don't know why she keeps asking owners whether they 'like the palate'. I bet the first thing the Mom did when she moved into her new place was wallpaper it.
The what? Palette?
You can’t wallpaper an entire palette. It’s on multiple surfaces. It includes fabrics, furniture, accessories, etc.
This was a fantastic transformation!
Ouch she is not happy ! 12 yrs wallpaper ? Her face ! Mad much?
Loved the black wallpaper, should have kept it on one Access wall
Mom is a good sport. This design is an improvement. Light sells.
Why there are many sitting arrangements after renovations
You're selling dreams of thousand possibilities. Reality means 5 children and the grandma living in your sunlight couch room and in your arts atelier.
I really hate wallpaper! Probably because I had to remove so much of it during home renovations..
No bedrooms? Also, only watched season 3 up to here, but have any of the houses on this show actually sold?
A few in the other seasons sold or had offers made on them whereas before the update they couldn't even get people through the door.
You also have to remember that this was the height of the housing crisis in the US. Selling a house in a year was considered fast. In the first seasons it was the housing boom and houses sold in hours.
They usually only do 3 rooms.
Lol off topic, but you can always tell when someone’s been through a divorce and still came out ahead financially.
Yup
I found her neck really distracting.
not a fan of the little eating area @ kitchen, facing a wall, I'd like to see a butcher block table & some more cupboard space, or a workable hutch with coffee bar etc....since there is a dining room to eat.
Nice job that house is going to go from cero to SOLD
Mom needs to be more positive!!!
I love it! Great job 👍
The mother has a hard time giving out compliments.
I don’t really like how theirs 3 living rooms basically when you walk in it feels weird and incoherent, also I would have just removed the breakfast bar entirely. I don’t want to eat facing a wall like that
Using the counter as extra counter top space would be better.
The home owner has no taste
Her 1982 hairstyle says it all
but dang she's got some guns
My thoughts exactly. The mom is also so unattractive.
They should have built in a small closet at front of the house--there are 3 sitting rooms in the house!
I see a lot of great houses.....with wallpaper. That's when my heart sinks. Personally, I still wouldn't buy this house because the kitchen is way too small, only 1 bathroom, and the living and family rooms are too close together. Sorry!
I like the update. I can't appreciate the den area as I don't like super modern but it is much nicer than what was there before. It flows better, anyway.
That is why I NEVER cared for wall paper. Like rabbits, it tends to reproduce & take over. Yipes!
Come on!!! 3 living rooms??? You don't know to use the space, interior design is not only full the spaces with new or beautiful things!
This is the second time I've seen her do that
Kitchen eating area is still looking at the wall.
That is such a weird house. All the rooms are so awkward in shape and location. Terrible design. I think I saw glass blocks in that weird dining room.
'I don't want to do that work'
What about the upstairs?
Boutique shopping is a shot of Savannah, Georgia.
Sophie is queen
Hate it when they put books in the shelves backwards!
Lauren is just weird. Her attitude is weird, and her taste is extremely dated, she acts half her age, and looks scary.. Wallpaper is a very personal choice. The first room I would put another chair to match the first one.
Yes, I thought putting one chair in the reading room looked strange and unbalanced. Surprised they did that.
Are the Open House people told what to say?
Maybe they're not told exactly what to say, but I think they absolutely are directed to an area that the show is redoing and asked questions like, "So what do you think of this round table sitting oddly behind the couch?" or, "How do you like this breakfast counter that faces all this floral wallpaper," and then the open house goers answer that question. Same with the final, after-makeover open house. "Don't you love these bright, neutral colors? Doesn't this room have a nice flow?" They're led towards what to talk about and how to respond, I think.
Almost $400,000 with only ONE bathroom?!
One bathroom + > $300,000 = No way!
The background music is way too loud. Can’t hear the dialogue!
The editors must've gotten their towns confused. The 4th house shown is in Lynbrook, not Commack.
It would be better to watch without that horrible music!
The area rug 🤮
That black flowered wall paper was beyond "dated", it was really downright ugly.
That facelift is a crime.
LOL Yes!
What is on the other side of that kitchen? Because I don’t like open floor plans but I feel you could probably open up the kitchen a bit.
House looks great but still only one bathroom and no garage!
I did not care for any of the redone rooms, usually I love the change, not this time.
Homeowners need to chill out when prospective buyers dislike their decorating. Buyers are not buying your style. They’re buying your house. Get over it!!!!!
Considering she wants to sell her house, it hasn’t sold in EIGHT months, the team with expertise/experience is there to help her...her attitude was all wrong.
I swear they find a way to use that ugly ass light blue paint in EVERY house
