Rick one thing you got wrong about AR Rahman, he is the exact opposite of Raja sir. ARR literally takes months to compose a song and goes through the notes multiple times to come up with what he wanted. Doesnt take away anything from his brillliance, but Raja sir is totally unique, he knows not one or two but every single track of the song he is composing and can write them immediately one after the other. I've heard stories of how he wrote the notes one by one for the Rakamma song to give to the different artists. It sounded so odd when they were playing their own parts. Only when everyone played together did they realise the beauty of the song, after the recording everyone gave a standing ovation for 10 minutes. There is only one Raja sir and it feels sad that we will witness an end to this brillliance within our lifetime.

He is an extempore composer for lack of a better word. The most time he has taken to compose any song of the 1,000+ movies now is 30 minutes. The way Raaja sir explained it music just comes to him - it happens. Sometimes he hits a chord on his harmonium (wooden box you see in front of him) and starts writing. He writes score for every instrument. It is truly a gods gift. No one in India composes this fast.

It sometimes hurts to see people deliberately spread false news about him, accusing him for being arrogant. He's never shy of speaking his mind more importantly never try to appeal anyone by pretending as a humble guy.
Over the time i found out people never change their opinions even if you prove their assumptions are wrong.
As for me and his dedicated fans we feel lucky to alive in the same time as this genius and forever grateful to him.

Interesting observations. Thank you for posting this video.
I had the opportunity to witness a recording in progress, at Maestro Ilayaraja's studio, decades ago. He is the only true composer in the entire Indian film music industry, as he has the entire music/song scape in his head and writes down the scores.
His music is not an afterthought. Nor cut-and-paste method adopted by other music directors/ arrangers who assemble music parts like a jigsaw puzzle.
Maestro writes the parts for all instruments at one go. He literally downloads the entire song/piece onto his score sheet.
He often says that he is unable to write as fast as his mind composes. Hence only a part of his thinking gets on to the score sheet.
It is observed that he writes (say) the 10th bar first , jumps to the second, then 1st and 3rd bar. Not in in a sequence.
For arrangement, he clearly remembers the tones and at times its number on the keyboard.
All his musicians have to sight read the scores to work in his studio.
Background scores composition is unique. Studio. Film runs on screen. Digital wall clock for timeline. Semidarkness. Maestro writes the score for the entire movie. Silence is a part of music. Instruments and (musical) motifs assigned to characters. Same phrase, different arrangements to convey sadness, happiness, tension and other emotions.
I can go on.. there is so much more of this musical genius.
So I shall leave here and go practise his songs.

i should note one more point.. his 6k songs in 1200 movies.. in a span of 4 generations... a song is just 5 to 6 minutes.. which he said has always done it in 15-30 mts.. only one song in tamil which he has taken 45 mts... he writes the notations (apart his main idea of music which comes in his mind the tune , the number of instruments, the orchestration, timing, the 2 part of the song, etc..) . by the way there are Background music for the same film which has 5-6 songs for a movie on an average.. his routine is come in the morning 7am sharp, in the studio, see movie tracks (just dialogues) and compose music 7-9 see the movie , take notes, give the notes by 9am to the orchestration team of say 40 instruments, and then do rehearsal from 10-11am.. and go for Take and perform 2-4 pm.. so in 1/2 day the BGM is done.. and then take the 2nd movie.... in a festival season he has tackled even 3-4 movies in a day with BGM for 3-4 movies plus around 20 songs.... just imagine he has been doing it for 3 generations and now even generation Z also enjoys music he has done since late 1969... thanks

Guys there is a movie called Hey Ram. In that the original music director left and the movie was nearing post production. The director sought Raja sirs help and to an already shot video he wrote a song and composed music and everything synced. Still many think the song was shot after song was composed. Also, remember, in that situation there was no song originally in that movie. Those were normal scenes but he overrode them and made a song upon the screens as if the director made those scenes for a song. He has done things like this numerous times and told directors to make a song when he sees a situation
