Live Face Bench

- I've had this cherry offcut from cutting a curved log into lumber in my shop for over two years and I've been wanting to make a bench out of it. The offcut tapers towards the center so I thought the thicker ends would make nice legs and the thinner center would give the piece some nice vertical movement.

Wow that bench came out really nice, the finish, the bow tie wood joint and everything! Very helpful video thanks for sharing!
The College Woodworker Thank you!!
Excellent job. Love the natural elements while still keeping the overall piece refined. Those are the best compromises of rough and beautiful.
Jake B Thank you Jake!
Saw the pic on the screen and the concept blew me away Looks fantastic!
Thank you!
Probably the coolest looking bench I have ever seen. Sweet job!
***** Thank you Chris!
Simple eloquent piece. I like how the legs splay out at the gentle angle and not just a 90 degree leg. Well done.
***** Thank you Michael!
Very nice, Matt. You are on a roll! Congrats with your editor's choice on the secretary by the way.
synapseZA Thank you so much!!! :)
Matt, you've got some really great direction with your creativity. It's good information to know as a newer wood worker you're thought process in designing a piece like this. Talking contrast, angles, and grain flow are learned skills that you make look second nature! Please keep sharing these ideas - or even how you came to know this stuff so us newer woodworkers can connect the dots. Thanks for sharing your life it's good information and great entertainment.
Jeff Wahlig Thank you, Jeff! This was a fun one since I was really building on the fly. I knew I had this thing and wanted to turn it into a bench. It really evolved as I went. Probably the most important thing is to always keep the grain in mind. That's where the real artistry comes in and sets your work apart from mass production where grain is not considered. Thanks again!
Very cool ,simplicity with a unique touch by adding the butterflies. Really like this piece.
That turned out really beautiful Matt. Love the different sized bow ties and the grain continuation.
Darbin Orvar Thank you Linn!
This is really something, I love it!
That is a piece of art. just beautiful.
Awesome work, the keys are a real nice touch. Well done.
Paul C Thank you Paul!
Very Nice. Love the design and finished product. My favorite aspect is that this scrap piece of Cherry is now a quality piece of furniture. The split, repaired with the inset walnut ties, is genius. Great to see a younger woodworker that gets it! Well done sir!
Island Dave Thank you so much!
Nice butterfly bandages Tree Doctor!
So beautiful, good work!
Very clever method glueing some sacrifice pieces for clamping and removing them later very easily and without hardly any remains!
Thank you!!
Your calm, straight forward approach to woodworking is a pleasure. I enjoyed the grain pattern preservation. In Philadelphia, we have what is called a Ginacotti--thats a pizza turned inside out. Your bench reminds me of that--LOL. And of course, our cheese steaks are pretty good too!
So Matt, when I make this observation I always sound snobbish, but here goes. There are craftsmen and there are artists. You obviously are the latter. This bench is a work of art. Nothing ornate or elaborate. Simple, functional, but the result is stunning. Of course I wouldn’t want to see it doomed to some museum behind red velvet ropes, but this piece has that intangible ingredient that differentiates craftwork from art.
Love the whole process of model making to decide on degree of angle BEFORE cutting into the slab. Sweet job
+rob maloney thanks Rob!
Well done!
Thank you Michael!
EXCELLENT JOB MATT.

Very inspired and inspiring. I have neither your tools nor skills but it's your creativity and passion that turn a good idea into a great bench. I can try to work that same attitude in the more simple projects I do and see what it does for my skill level and results. Thank you, Matt.
Man, that's awesome! Several great tricks in there for helping make your builds easier, too. Genius work!

So good! The blocks for clamping is so clever. This bench doesn't look like it should stay together because of the angles, but you have obviously proved my intuition wrong. It's defying gravity to my eye.
tomalcolm Thank you! I think the illusion makes it a bit more interesting :)
Beautiful piece Matt! Love how the Dutchmen came out
