"I interviewed Jerry Garcia in 1990 for a book I was writing about Virtual Reality."
The interview with Garcia was part of my research for my 1991 book, “Virtual Reality.” The interview took place at the old Grateful Dead offices in San Rafael, CA. The interview with Jerry Garcia was June 27, 1990. During the Garcia interview, Bear (Owsley Stanley) entered the room and the conversation."

What a guy....can't wait to meet him again 🤩💫🕉♾️⚡️
Jerry was a true renaissance man with a cosmic perspective. Amazing mind and amazing soul. We miss you man!
These dudes were so much furthur ahead of their time, I knew...but I had NO idea
yeah man, every time i find a new interview, i’m amazed at the scope of Jerry’s thought and insight. This is outrageously intelligent and clear- minded discussion of things that are becoming real currently. Jerry has such a clear “ take” on so many subjects. His tske on UFOs and aliens in another interview made more sense than anything i’ve heard. He had an intuitive knowledge, and obviously read extensively. He communicates so well on every level, and listens!
David Crosby said he would choose Garcia to speak for all musicians , if it had to be one person.. hard to disagree after listening . From his interviews in 67 onward to this, Jerry is so articulate, and interested, and sharp. His thinking is incisive and logical and well- informed. So great that he spoke as amazingly as he played. I will listen to this one and share it over and over. Good on you for getting this to us all. This is one of the very best. There’s a late ‘86 interview that’s way up there.. but even if he was high as a kite Jerry excelled in every interview i’ve ever heard. He laid it down in a way that anybody could pick it up. If everybody was so engaged and engaging in conversation , Life would be endlessly interesting. Thank you!
☮️❤️😇⚡️☀️AC
This interview is also fucking amazing. Hearing Jerry and Bear talk about psychedelics and the ancients is super interesting and radical to hear.
What an unbelievable conversation! All three of these guys are so far ahead of their time. True intellectual conversation.
Thanks for posting this into the Ether
I'm not sure a single one of those three gentlemen are confined to the maya of linear time . 2 of my heros, but first time hearing this interview 👌 🙌✌️
Really interesting interview. 90 Jerry was playing great and talking great.
This is gold. I love that after softly debating for nearly 16 minutes, Jerry casually asks whether Howard and Owsley know each other. Classic.
Complete brilliance. I could listen to this banter endlessly.
Makes me wish I had recorded some of our conversations out in the woods when we tripped

This is absolutely incredible! The insights into the future of virtual reality and technology here is prophetic. Amazing! Thank you so much for posting this.
I started this up and before I knew it an hour had flown by, I could listen to these guys talk about this stuff for days.
Wow jerry really knew what was up. This is all the same stuff I look into today. Grateful Dead have been and will be my all time favorite band.
It's very fascinating hearing them speculate about the future that we are now in
Oh shit...this is amazing. I enjoyed the lightshow talk from this angle. I've heard it from the other side of the argument. And this was 1st hand, from the bears mouth. And that wave...it's coming around ...coming around again.
In the late sixties at the Fillmore East, it was the Joshua Light Show
that always performed. I saw the Dead there with the New Riders, and
Joshua was there. Saw Mountain there wth Joshua. Then the light
show changed to Joe's Light Show
and that was not as good. 😊
...then in mid. 80's saw the Dead at
Red Rocks several times since I had
moved to Boulder, Colo. from North
Jeresey. That Jerry was sure unique. !
This is so prophetic.. Needs to be reshared.. The time is ripe

"People call me Bear". Priceless.
@ 16:42 , so epic.
Amazing moment. You could hear the reverence in Howard’s voice at Bear’s introduction.
Y did deadheads call Jerry Bear ? My niece who was Bobbys lover at the time bought me a Jerry doll ! The guys said don’t let Jerry c that !
Bear was Owlsley.
What an amazing historical document. Thank you so much for posting. Love your posts.
This interview could have been recorded yesterday, these guys were so well read and thinking about exactly the most relevant stuff to the future of humanity. I honestly wonder what Jerry would be thinking about the future now, he'd probably have something figured out no one else is really noticing, like he had here. Basically declaring how and why AI music will exist in 1990, incredible...
30:00 Bear correctly predicts the future. Never underestimate this man.
Definitely Far Out 👍👍 thanks for posting it.
Thank You for sharing this 💯💚✌🙃👎🤘🙏🔥

32 year's ago. AI , Virtual Reality, and even Singularity in a 1990 interview ? Even draws Bear into conversation. Amazing.
Incredible conversation. Amazing insights on topics relevant to our time right now,, decades ahead of what would eventually come to pass.
The thing he says about religion needing a definitive Human Baseline is really spot on. Think about how that discontent is manifesting itself right now in 2021. Thanks for sharing this!
Edit: Human Template / Moral Template.
And in 2024, the straying from morality and humanness is stripped more and more even only a few short years later. Religion is an endless void of beating around the metaphorical bush and never arriving at a definitive truth or answer or lifeline for the masses. It's the most basic premise that people consistently miss and shoot past, be good to others. It's as simple as that and anything outside of that is just water under the bridge.
Fantastic interview. Thank you!!
This could have been taken from a present day interview/podcast. Great stuff. Thanks
Was thinking the same thing it’s crazy that this happened 30 yrs ago the level of the technology they are talking about were just starting to into it now . Goes to show how fare ahead these guys were
You should mention in header that Bear is in on this. Always happy to hear him talk.
your command is my wish ;) what a mind! he ....is ...................missed.

had PigPen still playing with them on stage. LLLLLOOONNGG time

glad you dig-dug it :)
Thank you so much for this upload!! Loving every second, insane how 34 years later the topics are as fresh and interesting as ever
you are very welcome. a little sunshine on a cloudy day. peace.
I was listening to this and someone entered the room, and took notice , “why is that discussing philosophy and evolution “ I answered “ the Grateful Dead” …. “ as in the band the the Grateful Dead?” yeah sometimes they played music , but it goes way beyond that….
I LOVE that story. The "normies" just are not aware how deep in philosophy we dive into. I mean "normies" in the most loving way lol.
. You are ......Funny. !
+ appreciated.

It's really unbelievable that this interview took place in 1990. I always considered the Grateful Dead..the 5th Element. Jerry is the 6th Element. This dialog among these gentlemen in 1990 is totally relevant...( Artificial intelligence, virtual reality, the interface of drugs and computers and reality, etc)
Mr Garcia could have easily been a PHD at HARVARD, OXFORD, RUTGERS ( I went to Rutgers so I had to throw that in there). Once again a 1990 interview...way ahead of their time ( it's almost like they were time travelers) scary ahead of time interview
Yes, good input. He still amazes me to this day. In another interview I put up from 1990, he stated that he could see a situation where the audience could watch concerts from their living rooms through the inter-webs. Wowzers! Today, that's a major income stream for these bands and helps us feed that jones when we can't hit the road. This Garcia guy...he knows a thing or two.
I'd like to get Jerry's and Bear's take on Phish and their use of lights these days. But my God is this fascinating, every second of it.
Oh my... I's be glued to those speakers.
Doubt highly that Phish was on their radar. By the time they were gaining a real following, Jerry was fairly insular and in failing health. It's a shame, but the timelines just don't seemed to have crossed.
Big Steve stated that Jerry has liked Trey style once on his show but that's the most I've heard. During the 1994 Laguna Seca Daze fest where Phish played and some of the Dead crew helped out and Phil was there but as stated Jerry was in his own world. Tar, Hagen Daas & playing guitar.
Cigarettes
@@joshevans3452 Hey, I guess hypothetically speaking there. And shit, if we are talking hypothetical getting their take on the sphere would be cool too lol.
This is almost definitely the most intelligent conversation i’ve ever heard. This is how to converse. There’s listening, there’s a perfect rhythm to it, nobody steps on anybody else, instead they let each other’s thoughts lead them forward. Fully engaged …and the shining diamond of clarity is present throughout. So good. I’ll listen to this again and again.
I was thinking a similar thing. You can feel and hear the intelligence in the pause and rhythm
They had good drugs

saw many shows at Red Rocks since I moved to Boulder in 1977.

also Roy Orbison at Paramount Denver. J.J Cale in Boulder.

Amazing to hear how much of what they were talking about has actually came to pass. It’s like a Joe Rogan podcast. I could listen to these guys for hours.
Stumbled upon this tonight and my mind is blown... WTF
Wow.
trippy convo
I just wanted to poke in and say that the part about the apollonian and dionysian ages at 15:32 is pretty amazing. And I love the story Bear shared about the conversation with Hoffman in which they learned that substances these people were taking for plays, dramas, music and such were in fact not alcohol but psychedelics. If anyone knows of any literature that would cover some of these topics from a psychedelic side, please let me (us) know. peace.
Gordon Wasson, Albert Hofmann and Carl Ruck wrote a book about it called The Road To Eleusis. It outlines the theories that claviceps extracts were potentially part of these rites. Claviceps produces ergot alkaloids, and this theory is what Bear is referring to
@@bonzey1171 that's fantastic. thanks very much! I am ordering the book now. Peace.
More recently written, but on the same topic of Eleusis is "The Immortality Key: The Secret History of the Religion with No Name", by Brian Maruresku.

I don't know if you're on top of what's happening with Paul McCartney's plan and his view of the dionysian influence on himself and what he has attempted to spread across the universe I mean supposedly he was adopted by aleister Crowley who continued the dionysian energy throughout his life and supposedly beyond I'm trying to remember if I lost my way with this labyrinth but I'll be back if I have

Lyndon Johnson made sure we would never have Peace.
And we never have.
@@michaelcelani8325 I unfortunately concur 100%. Although I think peace never had a chance when the world's billionaires decided to create a secret society created by Weishaupt and many others, promising to work in behind close doors and not for the people but for the riches, power and the all great "Dragon of Old", the "Light Bringer"....Beelzebub, Mephistopheles, Iblis etc...we never had a chance.

Wow here it is 1990 and I'm hearing how technology used to be our friend but now we're not so sure wow and now back to the show
Jerry was a one of a kind
Dripping with Historic Value!
It's kind of funny I'm sitting here watching the screen in the hope of maybe Jerry running up and down the neck but I know after 40 minutes he's still on the same note he started off on oh wait I think I see...... nope
I always wondered what happened to the light shows. What a shame.
They went all out for the Fair The Well shows. It was amazing.

I didn’t like those farethewell shows , I don’t like that particular band or the lead singer that Philly picked out plus the tickets were way to high priced ! 3000$ for a font row ?unbelievable is all I can say ! 😵💫😱😖😣😱

you have beautiful memories and a huge online family of deadheads, lots of groups on Facebook too. I as well, will never be the same since Jerry passed. But the music and concerts help and are a blast even if I go less and less as I am in my early 50's. This is fantastic! Talking nano tech etc in 1990! Thank you!
Curious....a pic of Jerry and Brent? Why not one of Jerry and Bear.?
Me and my team talked it over and we came up with a plan, we said, than gani dude....let's confuse his coconut for a quick second. Finally you noticed. 🤪
Honestly, I picked the pic of 1990 Jerrry I had and put it up. I went for happy Jerry instead of stick with content Jerry I guess...lazy...etc :) Fair point though. Peace and nugs, be well as you walk down that lazy river road....

HELLO!
yes we are living through it now--"technological equivalent of psychedelics" . Maybe a bit more pathological than psychedelics. Miss you Jerry
To be fair pretty much everything is more pathological than psychedelics lol
I'll take what I can get though lol, wild hearing Jerry talking about computer nerd stuff that's relevant today and actually being RIGHT despite being born before color TV, but I estimate he was some kind prophet so maybe not that wild. And maybe anyone can see the future so I won't fellate Jerry anymore. Honestly the guy gets too much credit, he got his bandmates hooked on heroin and they all fucking died. Awesome musician, 10/10
Right down to Dead shows in cyberspace he hit the nail on the head lol
Jerry asked me about religion & aliens & ghost which Jerry has become a ghost but I haven’t had a visit from him in a long time !
Plus I told him about being earthbound which he liked , I told him I saw ghost when I was 3 years old & my mother told me that they were my guardian angels !

No keep listening to the Gratefuldead please !
I wonder how many people who came to interview Jerry came prepared with the magic flakes it always sounds like Jerry's either gacking up something or dealing with some major post-nasal slippage of the tongue!
He says he has allergies but it’s from snorting coke or smoking his heroin in his cigarettes !
Jerry was off hard drugs post coma til Brent's death, mostly weed and DMT
Also he had a nasally voice before he ever snorted anything

Kid Charlemagne snd CaptainTrips. Jer? Dose prior to this? Interesting perspective.
Jerry told me he had only tripped about 10 times after that it was no sense to do anymore ! I told him I did about 1000 hits ! He was taken back with that much but like I said before there isn’t much going on in this island I live on ! Then they started to cut it with rat poison!
