Ukraine war round-up: Discredited referendums, gas leak allegations, and conscription - BBC News

  • Voting in four disputed referendums in Russian-held parts of Ukraine ended on Tuesday, as indications grew that Moscow intended to use the exercise as grounds to annex more territory.
Meanwhile, Russia said it intended to open an army enlisting centre on the border with Georgia, where massive queues have formed as Russian men try to flee the country to avoid being sent to fight in Ukraine.
Those allegations have been given new impetus by mysterious leaks in two major gas pipelines to Europe, which came to light on Monday.
Ukraine has accused Russia of deliberately causing leaks in two major gas pipelines to Europe in what it described as a "terrorist attack".

The funny thing, which this report fails to mention, is that the Kremlin itself cannot recognise these referendums. To do so would amount to recognition that, before the referendums (and before the declarations of independence in Donetsk and Luhansk), these territories were the sovereign territory of Ukraine, which Russia has invaded. This completely contradicts the previous Kremlin narrative, that this is only a "special military operation" and not an invasion of another country at all. In other words, so far as Mr Putin is concerned, Ukraine already is and always has been the sovereign territory of Russia, never a legitimate, separate, independent state.

The few people that lived there who were pro Ukraine, most of them left ages ago when the conflict started in 2014. Even before the conflict started, there was never enough pro Ukrainians in eastern Ukraine to sway a vote in their. Lol you sound like a sore looser... I live in the west and I understand that the western media has been manipulating the truth and only telling us what they want us to hear or telling us NOTHING at all about this conflict for 8 years but it's still your job to do your own independent research!
One of Putin's main objectives was to de-nazify and demiliterise the Ukrainian military and for good reasons.
This conflict was a direct result of the Maidan coup in February 2014 which was backed by the US government. Immediately after the coup, Ukraine's Russian speaking people (ethnic Russians) in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine decided to protest and later declared themselves separatists in anticipation of anti Russian policies. They argued that the new government was not elected by the people and rightly so... it was installed and chosen by US officials Victoria Nuland and Geoffrey Pyatt, the US Ambassador to Ukraine... hmmm I wonder what happened to democracy all of a sudden.
During Viktor Yushchenko's pro US government from 2005-2010, the people in the Donbas region were seriously marginalised and discriminated against by the government simply for being pro Russian so they were not willing to live through that ordeal again... hence why they started protesting immediately after the coup. For example, whenever Ukraine has a pro US government they do petty things to annoy the ethnic Russians in eastern Ukraine like banning the Russian language and Ukraines far right nationalists are the only ones who get great pleasure from this.
When the protesters came out in full force, the Ukrainian military was sent to shut them up but they were met by firece resistance b coz the people in the Donbas region were not backing down. As a result, many of the troops returned to Kyiv and claimed they were not prepared to wage war against the people in the Donbas region who they saw as their brothers.
As an act of desperation, the US officials turned to Ukraines far right nationalists who were anti Russian and willing to fight the separatists in the Donbas region. For this reason, the Azov battalion neo nazi's who were the most radical far right movement in Ukraine was implemented into the Ukrainian military overnight.
Before Russia's invasion 7 months ago, these neo nazi's had been shelling the Donbas region on a daily basis for 8 long years killing thousands of Russian speaking people including children. As a result the residents in the Donbas region asked Russia for military assistance and the Russian military was sent to assist them. Russia sees this intimidation as an act of terror and genocide on the Russian speaking people in eastern Ukraine instigated by the US government.
In return the US, Canada, the UK and the Polish governments were secretly training and arming the Azov neo nazi regiment for 8 years to fight the separatists in the Donbas region. The Pentagon finally come out and admitted it a few months ago.
Meanwhile Putin has been trying to engage in peace talks for a number of years (on behalf of the Donbas residents) with the Ukrainian and US governments including Zelensky, hence the Minsk agreement, which stated that Luhansk and Donetsk in the Donbas region would be recognised as republics and the shelling would stop. Although France and Germany signed the Minsk agreement, the US government did not agree to this so the shelling in the Donbas region continued.
During the last couple of months leading up to what Russia called a special military operation (February 2022) the Azov regiment had increased their offensive in the Donbas region.
The Russian speaking people in the Donbas region say they do not want to be governed by Ukraine... they claim Ukraine is corrupt which they're not wrong. For example, many of them were not getting their correct pensions which is very sad. One elderly widow in Crimea said she was not getting the correct amount for her dead husbands pension when they were governed by Ukraine... at the end of the day people need money to survive. Since Luhansk and Donetsk in the Donbas region and Crimea held referendums and declared themselves a republic in April 2014, Russia has been assisting the people financially and they are very happy.
We can not judge the citizens in eastern Ukraine who do not want to be marginalised by their own government, a government which openly embraces fascism...unless we've lived through any kind of oppression ourselves and if we put ourselves in their shoes we would also want to be happy and live in peace.
It's quite obvious that the Ukrainian and the US governments along with the EU (including Britain) do not care about the Ukrainian citizens in the Donbas region simply b coz they are ethnic speaking Russians. (If you go right back to the cold war, you will understand that all the US government and the CIA cares about is destroying Russia's economy, to ensure their hegemony/world dominance, while undermining Russia's security threat by bringing NATO closer and closer to Russia's borders). Understandably, the Russian government cares about Ukraines ethnic Russians and this is the reason why there's an invasion in Ukraine.
