Here's a breakdown of Jubu Smith's legendary guitar part on the song "Anniversary" from Tony Toni Tone. This guitar part is often referred to as the song that started a new approach to R&B guitar. Borrowed from the gospel guitar tradition, the techniques used are freely found in R&B guitar parts today.

John Jubu Smith! The goat!!!!! You did amazing!!
Jubu is completely on a different level. I feel honored that I can even (barely) understand what he does
You murdered it big dog! I can’t wait till the day I get this great on the axe!
Andy puts a extremely nice touch on the song. Jubu didn't get deserved credits from the group, he plays for Frankie Beverly and maze now
So all I get from this is Jubu is a extremely great guitar player!
i enjoyed this tutorial. Thank you Sir!
I'm listening to this with headphones. Those effects are awesome!
Man that Strat sounds good
Yeah incredible, man! 🙏❤ 🙌 Jubu's Awesome,, and so are you! Thank's for posting
Glad that you enjoyed the video!
Sir you’re killin’ man! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
These strings broke my heart...
Awesome tutorial! What an eye opener! I recently discovered Jubu and I'm fascinated with his style of play. I want to have Jubu in my bag of tricks.
Great idea - use some of these ideas in your arsenal of licks. Transpose them, alter them slightly and make them your own. Good luck
Wow, what a beautiful sound, it's so amazing. Thanks.
How have I not come across your channel before now?!? I truly look forward to learn more from you man!
Thank you! Glad that you enjoy the content.
This looked hard but you made this simple after watching your lesson. Thanks so much.
How many after all these years just knew that guitar sound in Tony Toni Tone was Raphael or his brother.......I used to alwasys say...their guitar sounds were Heavenly ....When I listen to Jubu play...im like....I be damn...thats the sound we been in love with since ToneTT arrived on the scene.....and JUBU never occurred to me at ALL!
Beautiful . Locked in thanks 👍
I'm appreciative and grateful for this tutorial.
Thanks a million!
🎶🎸🎶🎸🎶
Glad that you enjoyed it!
YO !! Your videos/tutorials are awesome
Thanks man!
Sweet tone!! You got that stratocaster talking. Great video.
Thanks man!
Thanks again for your talent.
Great Lesson
Thank you for posting this breakdown of Anniversary by the Tony's. They were all raised in the church, and when I used to sing in church, on occasion they would back me musically. Have you done any of the songs Jubu did with Legally Blynd, in particular Let My Guitar Play?
That's amazing that they used to back you up! I know the Legally Blynd album very well - and in addition to the beautiful guitar playing and songs, Jubu's vocals are heavenly. I'll look into Let My Guitar Play. Thank you
@@AndyDacoulis I forgot to mention that Jubu and his brother Eric Pik Funk Smith are my blood nephews. Their dad John was my brother.
Good video. thanks Andy
👍🏿Couldn’t been played any better wow👏🏾🎸
Beautiful Andy!
Thanks Max!
Love it 👏🏾🏆
Having an acoustic and not being able to go ham on that whammy bar is a special kind of hell.
So sweet !!!!
Thank you!
Hey Andy, can you tell me what that chord is at 1:14 to 1:15 of the song is...I seem to be hearing DBE lo to high all on the 12th fret....Thanks!
Hey - that's an E7 Altered chord - taking you to Am. It's an E7(#9b13). Notes are: Low E, G#, D, G, C, E. Watch the video for the fingering - it's a bit tricky
Great song and great playing. Discovered the band through Mark Lettieri.
Thanks a lot. I saw the same interview with Mark as well. Cool that he mentions this song!
beautiful...a real vibe,,instantly recognisable ive always wondered what kind of effect he used....because the likes of H E R and many " nu soul " artists are using...
If i watched this 3 years ago i wouldnt understand, but it was eady to understand and see the chords.. if you are a beginner to need to learn your chords and theories, then come back
There is a video showing the whole album recorded. He recorded that song with a Semi-Hollow body and says he’s in F sharp
Could you find link for me . Thx
Camera stayed a little too far back at the important parts. Great work
How did you get your tone?
Hi - I use the Line 6 Helix for the tones.
@@AndyDacoulis thanks for the reply!
Backing track please 😀🙏
I’ll try to find it - I made it a while ago. Thanks
I found it. Send me an email at ad@andydacoulis.com and I will send it to you.
Maaaaan, where have you been, this style has been in R&B since Curtis Mayfield and many more.
Great playing but it isn’t at all a new phenomenon for black music by any means.
🙏🏾
Your playing is sooo silky-smooth it should be illegal !!! Took a deep dive into your content and everything is straight 🔥.DRAKARIS
Nice--- but WHY wouldnt you just show it in Ebm? No beginner is going to play this.....You are showing this to musicians who already play.....
That's a great point
This doesn't make sense if you are teaching us let us know
You don’t much about R&B. This style was exhibited waay before T3. But you a white boy play JUBU’s style and now you’re an “expert”!
So this dude is not the first nor last to give a tutorial on this song, but yet you bash him because he is doing it. Make it make sense. Also, he is well verse in jazz and blues; knowledge is very thorough. He is showing appreciation of the culture, I don't understand your agression? 🤦🏾♂️
@ DCM Everyone that knows Jubu knows that he was playing that style since he was 10 or 11 years old. I remember when the guitar was longer than he was tall. How do I know? Because he is my nephew. And he learned to sing and play, along with his brother Eric, singing with our family quartet, The Soulful Sons of Zion. You shouldn't put down on people because they aren't black. Obviously you aren't a musician or you would know that music is universal. The guitar strings don't care what color you are if you can play. Obviously this gentleman gave my nephew a great compliment just by breaking down the song. And Raphael and Carl Wheeler wrote the song. So I say if you can't play the song or a guitar at all your comments should stay YOUR thoughts.
@@LarryOnKeys I agree with you.
@@TheGospelQuartetParadise Well said!👍🏾
@@TheGospelQuartetParadise ignorance at its best with his comments. Also, loving the bloodline of music in your family.
