S9.E8 | Pegasus Suites is the First Modern Building in Georgetown

  • I discuss the context on the New Pegasus Suites and Corporate center as the first modern architecture building being constructed in Georgetown and on the coast. I expect that there will be a line of similar hotels along the coast to take advantage of the view of the Atlantic ocean. Georgetown is expected to divide into an Old Town where buildings are constructed from wood or concrete and steel and a New Town where all the new buildings that are similar to the Pegasus Suites constructed from glass and steel.

    Unfortunately our joint venture lost it from the Chinese with a USD6mio difference. We bid at USD102mio and the Chinese bid at USD96mio. By the way, the structure is old fashioned steel and concrete. Nowadays more and more is being built with CLT Cross Laminated Timber and Glulam. Reducing CO2 footprint is mandatory.

    What will become of the Band Stand ? It looks totally lost I'm afraid. Hopefully Robert Badal will have an eye for it.

    The electricity poles contribute to a somewhat messy look overall. Little area of untidiness scattered all over still contribute to second class sub par look.
    Overwhelming amounts of money will have to flow in and there has to be a totally different way in executing civil engineering. Guyana should hire exterior landscaping architects to help with this messy untidy look. It’s just awful .

    The water is rough today...the waves are high. I do prefer the "new town" buildings. Much more light. Those concrete buildings look heavy and "hard"...if I could use such phrase to describe the buildings. But they do look hard and without any kind nice architectural designs. Appreciate your video. ..thank you!

    Thanks for the video.I fear this "new town style may spoil the humble looks of the city,Also I am worried about if our emergency services have enough training to tackle a problem in a tall new towner (12 stories is tall as per guyana's standards).

    Please emphasize the greeness of the building. The blue glass you refer to is actually 30,000 Sq ft of solar panels to generate electricity.
    We are living in the age of information, and the Guyanese public should become technically knowledgeable of essentional features of engineering that will be suitable to modernize Guyana.
    This Chinese construction company is involved in several major projects.
    They are probably design build contractors that utilize their experiences with modern building materials from China.

    I pray PPP comes to their senses and continues raising wages across the nation as APNU-AfC did. Our citizens and labor force continues to be undervalued.
    Our nurses, teachers, police, mail carries, fire department, first responders, military persons and many other government public sector employees continue to be under paid..
    The average cost per person per month in George town is 300k plus
    MOST people aren't even touching 150k per month.
    Living in George town is 26% the cost of living in New York city but, somehow falls under 10% that in average pay.. ..
    Something must change and Guyanese must be paid for their labor and services to nation.. It makes no sense us pursuing anything other than higher wages and standards for Guyanese citizens and employees.

    I seldomly comment on videos posted on this site. But I now feel compelled to do so. What happen to modern ARCHITECTURE .This is one UGLY building for any use,more so a Hotel. This would have been appropriate in the 19th and possibly the 20th century. But come on, really, in this age. ?

    • @RaphaelNation
      @RaphaelNation  3 года назад +2

      Ugly is subjective. Some may like this style and some may hate it, but this is unambiguously and unmistakably a modern building. This is modern contemporary architecture. As someone said before, this building looks more inviting than the concrete Orchid Gardens Plaza being construction behind the botanical gardens. That building is ugly.

    I do not understand why the author of the article thinks that Georgetown should be built like New York or Singapore. those are different cities with their own features. Why put hotels along the coast road? the risk of flooding is great, the overtopping of the sea wall is frequent and visible. where does he intend to put drainage and sewage systems? Why do folks arriving at Cheddi Jagan airport want to travel 25. Miles to be on the low lying seacoast ? What is the interest of the view they have of muddy water??

    • @RaphaelNation
      @RaphaelNation  2 года назад

      It has to do with business and profits and history. The comparison to Singapore is appropriate because Guyana is located at the equator like Singapore. The comparison to New York is a for benchmarks: Singapore has a more advanced and efficient transportation system than New York and Guyana is chasing chasing Singapore not New York.

      I totally agree, it's not modern, it's just a new style to Guyana, which is very far behind when it comes to architecture. The only thing that makes it seem modern is the glass. And concrete and steel buildings can also go very high. It has to do with the foundation of the building.

    I was born in England of Guyanese parents and have travelled many times to Guyana since 1989..and I have seen the changes.
    Georgetown is a beautiful little city and has many beautiful architecture from clononial times. The new Pegasus is hidius ,ugly looking structure and does no justice to the environment and the surrounding area. Guyana should concentrate more on the main infrastructure like the kokers, canals and other major works, recycling and cleaning up the city law and order, and its suicide rate, and should be addressed. To many tall buildings in Guyana will spoil the skyline where you can't see beyond like in NYC, London, Miami, Dubai etc.trapping pollution and restricting ocean breeze, and City Hall is a beautiful building like many other building in the country in disrepair and in need of serious attention to bring them back to there former glory for all people's of Guyana to enjoy as well as tourists. I would hate to see Guyana coastal areas "boxed" up like Brazil, Miami and elsewhere. When I visit beautiful Guyana I don't want to see tall ugly concrete structure like tomb stones. Guyana should be different from other neighbouring countries and Islands. Sad if it becomes so just like any other city.

      Aside from accountability of technical standards and quality control during design and construction, the public notifications and environment impacts of the project would have been discussed during the pre design stage.
