redbone's baritone wraps you up warmer than your grandmother's mink.
Had seen Mr. Redbone on SNL and Carson back in the day and loved him. Knew he got the South.
One night around 81' or 2' went with girlfriend to Boston's on the Beach in Delray, Fla (Errol Flynn hung out there in the 40's) and Leon was there playing. Maybe twenty people around the bar. We were seated maybe ten feet away.
Were there hours, it was magical.
R.I.P. Leon.
I saw Leon Redbone live. Just once unfortunately. But he put on a fantastic show (of course). I'll never forget, after the show, I was out front of the venue on the sidewalk, waiting for my ride, and who rides by but Mr. Redbone himself.............IN A FREAKING FULLY RESTORED 1930'S LIMOUSINE. Like a boss. This guy was untouchable. Rest easy Leon Redbone, you deserve it.
Great story
The blues ain't nothing but a good man feeling bad. - Leon Redbone
Rest in peace Leon....you did it your way....and it worked great. Thanks for the memories.
I was in D.C. touring with John Prine in 1975, and we hung out with Leon....seemed so nice...he had his magic, mystery suitcase with him....I told him "hey Ry Cooder also does Diddy Wah Diddy" and he said, "oh yeah? He does that too?"
Awesome
RIP sweet Leon, a special era has passed. Thank you for all the good memories, it's all we've got left
Such a sad day today May 30th 2019. We lost the unique Mr. Redbone. R.I.P. Leon. You will be sorely missed.
Love Leon Redbone! The best thing I ever saw on SNL!!!
him and Ry cooder really do this song beautifully.....
In the town of Louisville
Lived a man they call Big Bad Bill
I want to tell ya, he sure was tough
He certainly did strut their stuff
He had folks scared to death
When he walked by they held their breath
He was a fighting man, sure enough
Now Bill took himself a wife, he has to lead a different life
Big Bad Bill is Sweet William now
Married life has changed him some how
He's a man that they all used to fear
Now the people call him sweet papa Willie dear
Stronger than Samson I declare
'Till a hot head mama bobbed his hair
Big Bad Bill don't fight anymore
He wash his dishes and he mobs up the floor
He used to spend his evenings looking for a fight
Now he's got to see his mama every night
Big Bad Bill is Sweet William now
Big Bad Bill don't fight anymore
He wash his dishes and he mobs up the floor
He used to spend his evenings looking for a fight
Now he's got to see his mama every night
Big Bad Bill is Sweet William now
Coolest Guy Ever . Class
Leon you are a global treasure! Please know you have touched my life! I can't imagine having lived thru my life without your music as my constant companion. On my darkest days your music made me smile and realize what a gift this life is. I pray your health improves and that you can again share your enormous gift with those of us who have loved your music and the man who played it. Thank you for giving me the gift of seeing the good in this life and that it is indeed worth living. You may never know in this life, what you have done for me, but I will never forget you for it. Thank you!
Man i was trying to think of something ro post here a nd your words said it all. I too have used Leon to bring some comfort and peace in times of tumult. At age 48 I am greatful that music such as this can give me goosebumps and hope at the same time. Thank you for letting me know I am not the only one who has used Mr Redbone as a crutch
I've loved Leon Redbone's music since I first heard it in the 70's. If Leon is still reviewing comments, I just want to say thanks for decades of joy in listening to your incomparable songs, and best to all who listen now…
This is wonderful...I lost my brother Billy, when i was 10 years old, and this song reminds me of him! NOBODY messed with my brother! Sadly, he died when only 30 years old...but, this was him, all the way! (He had a wife and 3 children who were his life...)
Yep Yep, first saw Leon Redbone on Saturday Night Live (78-79). I musta been like 13 er 14. Didn’t listen to him again till I was at least 19 er 20. He really is a National Treasure.
I was also just a kid when my folks would watch SNL and I first saw Mr. Redbone. Started to really jam to him in Jr. high. RIP Leon Redbone, now you can time travel back to 1921.......
My cousin, (bobby perkins ) would liston to leon redbone, sing along an have a good time, miss yu bobby, rest n heven bro.
I saw the man in Eureka at a blues festival!! One of the best show ever!!!
You'll never be forgotten. Rest in peace, our brother.
A true American Music Treasure...you live always through every tune, every verse...thank you Leon for your talent and its many stories in tune.
Leon an original and a soul from an earlier period. I get it.
God bless you Mr. Redbone ! You make my life so much better !
I was 14 in 1977 when I first heard of Leon Redbone from a dear friend of Nick Sr. ........magical !!
Thanks I love this channel.. saw Leon in Dallas around 1981 one of the best shows ever. when my grandkids are actin fussy, all PawPaw needs to do is sing a few Redbone dittys... magical. ;-)
One of the only two guys I know that can get away with that moustache & goatee:
- Leon Redbone
- Frank Zappa
And Dan Hicks.
I must draw your attention to an amazingly talented guitarist in the UK , Tony Barford , who recently passed away June 2019 . lovely moustache & slide guitar.
I aspire to be among that exclusive group; wish me luck.
Not a goatee. It's called a soul patch. Way cooler. Otherwise, totally agree!
Thank you Leon, you were pure class!
As a man out of time, always loved your show, Leon. Thank you for all your music.
What comment can a guy make, genius!
An under estimated performer.
Leon live kicks a** for sure..
He was sure different but fun and enjoyable to watch perform. R.I.P.
RIP Mr. Redbone

RIP Leon... I'll listen to you, and think of you often...
I love Leon, so unique, but Ry Cooder does the very best version of this, and that is the one that caught van halens attention to record it... with his dad
Beautidul.
was front row center in Carboro NC for your concert, Leon. You are missed.
But never forgotten (:
So sweet
God Speed Leon! 🥂
Great tune Leon!!
utterly superb!
how have so few people found this?
Ive only just discoverd Leon, i love his style, its brill.cheers BillyH.
I know it's been three years, but have you seen his "this Bud's for you" TV ad? Trippin' ...
Thanks Leon!
just love it
Did he sometimes have a tuba accompanist?
I used to have the music for this. It looked like a very old copy.
I am looking everywhere for the sheet music! DM me if you find it!
Wouldn't be surprised if this was the inspiration for the Van Halen cover.
Well, this, and the ORIGINAL 1924 rendition by Billy Murray ... ;-)
Northern Exposure brought me here.
Is there a Leon Redbone track used in that show?
@@LeonRedboneTributeChannel - Yes, in one of the episodes, "Big Bad Bill is Sweet William Now" is heard.
you are my idol
I know what "a brown-skinned Delilah" is (the original lyric) ... but what's a "hard-hat momma"?
Or am I mis-hearing the line??
Stoutaragua That's not a goatee, it's a soul patch.
Darn straight son
That's no Moon. It's a space station! And yeah, that's a soooooul patch.
Good-bye Charlie
classic old emmet miller tune
Thank you, was wondering who wrote it, Van Halen did a version too and they let their dad play clarinet I think on the track.
Jack Yelled and Milton After wrote this song.
Van Halen did this too
lonecrapshooter67, and it won't put me to sleep.
I like Leon Redbone, however he didn't write " Champagne Charlie"
he arranged it.The song was written by Blind Blake.
Actually it was written by Jack Yellen & Milton yager, as listed in the above video description information.
Did you know he has an alter ego? This man IS father guido sarducci.
oh stop it, no way lol
Tell that to Don Ameche.
Like this version BUT the mighty Van Halen version is way way way better.
I love VanHalen...but they need to stick to what they're best at. Their version was far form even "good"....definitive version is the one and only Emmitt Miller
@@blackbirdsocietyorchestra8471 I agree with you, I like Van Halen version because their dad played the clarinet through the song and had the solo. The Van Halens dad played with big bands back in the 50s I believe.
@@grd5150 thats cool , i didnt know that ! You learn something new every day :)
@@blackbirdsocietyorchestra8471 Exactly.
Van Halen's version is way too fast.
What's the rush?
