I have never seen Perfect Blue but I have seen multiple videos talking about Perfect Blue and its importance and I have always thought about it as the separation between your public image and who you really are. Like you said in the video, Me-Mania was obsessed with Mima the pop idol but didn't separate that image of her from Mima the person. When you talked about how the internet was being used in this anime, it reminded me of another series I had recently finished that was also ahead of its time called Serial Experiments: Lain (which I recommend to the more advanced anime watcher since it takes a while for you to understand what happened). To put it simply, the anime follows the main character, Lain, as she slowly becomes more and more involved with her online persona and slowly loses touch with reality, which pretty much happens to Mima, from what I know as she is losing control of her pop idol persona and is struggling to know what is real and what isn't.

Satoshi Kon draws his characters with a certain type of realism, and the only characters considered "attractive" are the idols and celebrities.
Everyone else is drawn in a style similar to real life.
He even exaggerates the "anime" style from the 90s. The audience recognizes the anime character on the door, with her bright blue eyes and orange hair because that's what we're used to seeing. The scene then transitions to Me-Mania, in which I consider his character design to be perfect.
If Me-Mania was drawn to be more handsome, I'd feel that the audience wouldn't feel as frightened and even sympathetic towards his character.
Like you mentioned, virtual vs. reality plays a huge part, and that's what I love about Kon's artstyle.

Great video! I'm always pleased to see the younger generation checking out the anime I grew up with. I really appreciate the insight you brought to it. I saw this in the 90s and it felt completely relevant to the time.
My Japanese teacher in highschool played it for our class, I don't know if she screened it beforehand, but I remember her having to turn the tv-cart around (damn i'm old) during that one nightclub filming scene lolol

I have watched Perfect Blue at different points of my life (so far) and each rewatch hits harder than the last. You rarely see anime that capture both the young and old audience. I might have to rewatch it one more time before the year ends lol
