  • Day Eight of our 2022 journey along Scotland's Southern Upland Way long distance trail was supposed to have been a rest day at Wanlockhead, Scotland's highest village, but we'd cut the previous day short at Sanquhar by booking into a B&B with Frances at Newark Farm where we were made very comfortable.
Before we'd started the trail at Portpatrick we'd also booked a visit to the lead mine at the Museum of Lead Mining at Wanlockhead so in order to make the appointment had to cover the 7.5 miles by 2.30 pm. Although there were a couple of high ridges involved we were fairly confident we'd make it despite both of us continuing with niggling ankle issues.
As luck would have it, the tiny village, way off the beaten track, had been taken over by the Wanlockhead music festival for the weekend putting the pub off-limits to us as tickets were sold out. From our pitch on the bowling green it didn't stop us hearing the music!
