My Profile:

I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.
I really like the style of this video. The "walk and talk" learning session followed by some real world application with a few fish mixed in.
Thanks!
You're making want to start up rod building. Just what I need, something else to obsess over.
I got the bug after one of his first rod videos…. It’s a sickness.
It’s so much fun and easier than most people assume
Cool can tell you really like that rod first musky seen up close teeth .that small mouth took off. Enjoyed.
Thanks!
Recording video, talking on the phone, hooking into big smallies - we call that super multi-tasking. Matt calls it 'Tuesday' lol.
Also - Have a great tournament on Guntersville! We're all rooting for you!
Lol!
Beautiful build. I wouldn't be so disappointed catching those musky, looked like fun to me.
They are a blast!
ok, you just made one I dont have and by the looks of the way it handles fish, I will need to build this one! Thanks Matt.
one of my favorites!
Time lapse video, on the water footage, and fish catches all in one video. 😎Wow, your certainly putting in the overtime 🤠….or the ice finally melted🤷♂️….😂
I also do not prefer the extra fast flipping rods for safety reasons. When you make that perfect flip into the spot you know the “biguns” live and get bite by a “dink” when you set the hook the fish comes flying out of the cover/water, just misses your head, and lands out in the middle of the lake.😊
🙏 For smooth travels to the tournament. Received my flatlands, switch blades, and stupid tube jig heads already🍺.
Thanks! I’m glad the ice melted
Great video. I like how the commentary is going thru the abbreviated rod build. Well done
Thanks!
I have recently come to the same conclusions about power and action for my primary flipping rod that you mention for the exact reasons discussed. No doubt your recommendations here are extremely sound. Wish I had someone explain these concepts to me years ago. Experience, on the other hand, can provide a bitter education.
Thanks!
Thank you, Matt! Good luck this week! I wonder if I was the only one pondering your beverage pairings for that awesome rod building adventure.
Haha!
I completed this rod as my first build. Its ugly as heck but catches them. I love the action and backbone. I named it Frankenstein 😆
Haha love it!
@ the rod itself is not ugly. I scraped the epoxy off 3 times before getting it right. Label is crooked 😆 i still love it.
Nice rod build, cool on water footage, thanks for the vid.
You bet!
I have 2 of them from now all the way to end of the fishing season every tournament I love it most I use it for 5/16
Awesome
FS966-MHX 8'0" this is for my heavy punching grass I love it
I haven’t tried it yet! I’ll check it out!
You caught some musky and smallmouth nice fish Matt!
You got that right!
Been thinking about building some of my own rods right now just doing guides tips and seats, did you realize right after you talked to Johnny you described the blank as a custom reel I thought that was funny,I even went back to see if I heard right
yeah i said reel instead of blank haha
@@MattStefanFishing blame Johnny for distracting you
I told you Matt, I can’t wait brother until you done as I would say mass produce a good 1314 rides and say hey first come first serve I would love to have a nice Flippin rod,!!!!!!!!! My only jigging worm rod is a tournament St. Croix legend 66 medium heavy I just don’t think it’s long enough and it gets me to where I need to be when I’m flipping I’m always 3 to 4 feet short of where I’m trying to aim, but when I take my 73 Triad Boyd Duckett and it’s a thick /light rod, but I just don’t think I have found the right one because I use that I actually snapped the tip of it setting the hook on a 5 1/2 pound fish which I landed if I didn’t have braid I don’t believe I would’ve got the fish in the boat but do you suggest a good flip and rod that I could buy around $150 Matt any suggestions man I would gladly take in consideration from you thank you very much Kenny the bass 💥🌘🌑
i really dont feel comofrtable suggesting a rod thats on the market as im not familiar with them since i build my own
I enjoyed the video. I was wondering how you hold the guides on before wrapping. I use braces rubber bands.
I put a dab of rod glue on it
Your the fastest rod builder I've ever seen. Nice on the water footage. I mentioned this on Randy's channel but check out TylersReelFishing Why I released the biggest bass I will ever catch. Fine young man doing the right thing.
I’ll check it out
Cool video Matt ! Have you ever considered putting a light weight AFTCO roller tip on one of your musky rods... for heavy braid or mono it works beautiful. For all the reasons you will understand. Maybe you can convince AFTCO to make a micro roller tip for bass rods! AFTCO will make a ladda money if they do... all pro anglers would use them for sure. Maybe AFTCO or some other company all ready makes one... Bill
Hey Matt ! This was not an AD for AFTCO... imagine tossing crankbaits, spinner baits, big swimbaits and glide baits without any friction on the tip when using braid... the feel and sensitivity is amazing ! Micro roller tips on bass rods, when using braid, will be the future. It will be awesome ! Bill
thanks for sharing ill check them out
Great video and you have answered a question I have had for decades on whether or not a "Heavy" bass flipping stick can pull double duty as a "Muskie" rod. I have 2 13 fishing Omen Heavy 7'1" casting rods I bought during Boxing Day sales that I will use for my main flipping. They have a softer tip than my medium heavy 6'6" old school pure muskie rods but as you stated have enough backbone for big fish and or heavy cover. I wish I could get access up here in Ontario on where to look at building my own rods as I would love to make all my own technique specific rods and hopefully save some money as well. Thanks again!
Yep they will work for Muskie rods to
I hope your practice has gone great & you have several waypoints to bring in the win! Got ? How did you come to know or like MHX rod blanks because there are several brands, I really like that rod its the perfect rod for flipping, that was some great footage of you building that rod also, I'm a CNC machinist by trade been at it for 37 yrs, I'm going to try to start building them hopefully this winter & try to make some extra $ good luck tomorrow 👍
I was introduced by a friend that had been building for a long time and told me MHX was the best…i haven’t looked back since
Great video, looks like a really nice rod! Do you you make your own to save money, or is it just something you like to do? I’m thinking of building a rod but I I’m not sure of the benefits outside of the satisfaction of making something. If that rod were being sold on a big website, about how much do you think it would cost?
You build rods for about half what a similar rod would sell for at retail! That rods would be about a $400 rod at retail prices that i built for about $180
@@MattStefanFishing Thanks!
Hey, thinking of making a MHX rod. Are you using the Elite Pro or Elite -X series blanks? The numbering/mag bass name, and weights seem like G Loomis rods, do you know if the MB are similar to the taper on Loomis MBR ?
i use both serious but cant make the comparison to g loomis since i dont use them
Camera man ? Might have broke your rod ,So sad , 😏 but man you are so good at building custom rods , I’m going to check out these blanks , I like how you can make the rear part of the split grip handle not so long , I hate rods that from the handle seat to the end of the butt not so long , like 14 inches max , is what I prefer , I heard Canadian geese flying in the background , lol , I like to hunt em , I will be looking up that blank too thanks bro
I prefer slightly shorter rod butts as well
@@MattStefanFishing yep I noticed that too , thanks bro
Matt Stefan Custom Rods coming soon!
haha
How do you get so lucky (No bite offs?) I think I lost 70 bucks in 1 week in new York. Thanks Matt
I had my lucky horseshoe with me
Nice musky!
Thanks
So I’m confused.. why use this rod vs the mb874? Can you explain the differences when I’d use one vs the other?
this is a little heavier rod than the NMB-874. so if im fishing heavier cover i prefer the FP885
I know this was made a long time ago but what color of thread are you using while building this? I really like that grey color!
Nevermind I just read the description!
its a great color!
We’ll ,I’ll be dang,,,,man did I break your rod, I thought I used the net to shew them snakes away😢
Haha! No you didn’t break the rod
LOT OF LUCK !!!!
Thanks!
"fish of 10,000 casts" my ass...
Fish of about 200 flips haha
Stop it Matt , 😀 mud hole is sold out of nearly every mhx elite blank.
Dang
