I had trouble with this idk if you guys did but to lengthen one side of the cube go to edit mode and use the tool with arrows to scale only one side. To add a mirror modifier go to edit mode and click one of the sides, then look to the right where you will see a tool that look like a rench, then click on it go to modifier and click mirror. Hope this helped atleast one person
