Why Bonsai Are So Expensive | So Expensive

- Bonsai is an artform that requires years of training, and centuries of dedication. At the 2012 International bonsai Convention a tree was on sale for one hundred million yen, just under a million dollars. And many more of these trees are considered completely priceless. So what is it that makes these trees so expensive?

Unbelivablee..the work this lady puts into those trees will show its effect maybe 2-3 generations later..she will never see what she has created. U cant put a pricetag on time..thats why bonsai are so expensive
Wow that’s really shows the love and care she has for future generations because now she isn’t doing it for the money anymore...
right
It's years* not generation
worst part is people who will buy it for million dollars as a showpiece won't even take care of it like her and it would eventually die in few years. So all her hard work is pointless

This female bonsai master is also something of a "rebel" because Japanese traditional beliefs are very gender rigid. My wife attended an international bonsai conference in Japan, and the Japanese male presenters literally told the audience "you cannot be a Bonsai master if you are a woman" and "I am the last of my family to do bonsai, I only have daughters and no sons so my knowledge will die with me."
So for this lady to quietly go about being awesome in the face of huge discrimination makes her even more of a legend (in a quietly humble Japanese way of course).
This makes me not like her now. Return to tradition!!

I just got into bonsai a while ago and it's really helped me appreciate plants and especially patience a lot more than I did before! Just knowing that you're helping to grow and nurture something that might far, far outlive you is incredible and exciting. I love this hobby and I can wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone! It's cheap too, you don't need all the fancy tools and pots at the beginning- just go out and look for tree seeds, plop 'em into the ground and water them. You can turn pretty much any tree into a bonsai if you want to and it's so much fun to go out into the woods looking for seeds or tiny seedlings to take home!
It's just magical to feel the the bonsai tree right now which your ancestors around 400-500 years ago garnered! How beautiful it is to pass down generations of thoughts & teaching through this art.
Just magnificent! ❤️
*Looking at my $25 bonsai from Costco* Somehow I don't think that much effort went into making you
Especially if it's plastic. Gosh I wish I had a realistic plastic one.
Normally it's just a ficus branch bend and cut at the wanted height.
Or the ones with really thick nebari-style root. It's done by grafting. So technically not a real bonsai.
Also takes some time to make these, just do not require the love and patience as the craftsmen ones do.

Such beautiful trees. My aunt has one she brought back from Japan in the late 70's and it's still very healthy and alive since it's like a child to her and she takes great care. It's old and she had it evaluated once (2012-2013?) and at the time, she could have priced it at $120k if she wanted to sell, but that wasn't going to ever happen. It's in her will and my cousin gets it when she passes. She even has a security cam pointed right at it just in case lol.

lol I have a little succulent family of my own. A common baby cactus, baby aloe vera, basil (idk I just want to throw that out there), and a desert rose bonsai. The bonsai will be sprouting in about 3 weeks!
sameee 😭😩
Succulents are extremely easy to keep alive. Remember, they love sunlight. You can't keep them in the middle of a room. If you live in a cold weather state (like I do, I'm in Ohio), keep them outside for as much as the year as much as possible, as long as temperatures are above 32 F. Take them inside and keep them on a sunny windowsill during the winter. If you live in a state that doesn't experience freezing temperatures, you can leave them outside year-round. When we get a string of days here in the winter when it's above 32 F, I take mine outside. Even a cloudy day outside is brighter than a sunny day inside. Most succulents tolerate cold temperatures quite well, as long as it's above freezing.
Oooo..i love succulents...i have about 20 varieties...
Anyone thinking we're like Bonsai? She states: it "keeps changing by how you love & manage it." We are no different from Bonsai.
i hope we're not, if someone purposely stops you from growing and force you into positions you dont want to be in, that seem like a not fun situation.
There was a small stand with maybe about a dozen bonsai trees in the town I live in. Each tress varying in size, the smallest obviously being the cheapest and the largest was around $400. I’ve always liked the way the trees looked but me and my cousin saw the price and was like “never mind, ain’t paying that much for a silly, but neat looking tree.” I wish I had know the amount of time and care it took to grow and produce one. Looking back I’m sure the person selling them off the tiny table was probably heartbroken by our brash ignorance.

It's living art. No different than the amounts famous paintings or sculptures dictate. Just these have to be maintained a lot more to survive.
you forget that because they are living things they react their own way to what ever you do, unlike a painting or sculpture. A 800 year old painting will look the same from the day it was painted as long as u maintain it and an 800 year old tree will also change in addition to the maintenance

I always thought Bonsai trees were neat, but I never really knew anything about them, this gives me an incredible respect for the people who work on them, I had no concept of an art form that took so long.
As an artist, I know the pain of selling the art you've made . Its priceless.

this is so funny
I had the privilege of visiting the National Arboretum in Washington DC this past summer and there is a Bonsai garden of trees that are on average 200-300 years old, including one that survived the Atomic Explosion near Nagasaki that is 600 years old and was then offered as a peace offering from Japan following the war. That day gave me a whole new appreciation for Bonsai as it is way more than just an art form, it teaches many things

This video got me inspired to just plant normal trees
Watching a bonsai gives a immense level of satisfaction. Don't know why but it makes the mind so calm
The reason it is so expensive is the crazy amount of effort it take to make one a crazy amount. Japan has a lot of expensive things because in Japan almost everyone takes there job seriously and puts a lot of effort in to it. So the expensive version of something in Japan is very expensive because in Japan they do not half fast something it is 100% or 0%.
Damn right brother

Ah shit no wonder their hentai is grade a
It's like the internet in Germany. You are looking for something on the internet and only in 3 years you can see the results.
Mies
Okay... was ? 😂
I thought you had good internet. Cheers from Milan (Italy)
Alberto Crescini haha germany is not more that good how it was before
I’ve got gigabit connection here in Milan, and almost 75% of Italians have in VDSL2 (up to 200mbps).
I’d love to go and watch her work, learn from her. This seems extremely fascinating
I hope that lady lives forever. Thats the most beautiful banzai set I've ever seen. Absolutely amazing
I hope this woman lives a long life so she can see her work flourish :) this is so sweet and I feel like she deserves to see the fruits of her labour and patience
The bonsais are like the grandma's grandchildren 🥰🥰

Bansai Sensei: this took me 25 years to make...

Utter RESPECT. I pray this art never dies.
mini bonsai is overrated LOL
@@claudekim7876 Overrated? It’s literally a form of art. Idk how you can overrate actual art... but ok? You do you
@@papasscooperiaworker3649 lol most bonsai masters dont even grow mini bonsai trees.
@@papasscooperiaworker3649 art is subjective. Beauty is subjective. What you consider art or beauty is different from others no matter who made it or how long it took to make it.
@@jclive2860 That's a better way to put something than simply writing, "overrated". This is an answer I can get behind.
You know you've found a dedicated worker, when you see them putting their heart a soul into something that may never happen in their own life time.
Also anyone else her manner speaking extremely relaxing even if have to read it?
There are two local bonsai gardens and 1 (that I know of) retail outlet bin the Seattle area. I have to visit all of them occasionally just to see the beauty and craftsmanship. Love them.
If I would become a bonsai master...I'll never sold my precious work of art.
She has a big heart, she is the best.
