I'm an Icelandic-Canadian girl (white hair, gray eyes, and pastier than your can imagine), and my Korean boyfriend brought me to a family gathering to introduce me to them. I knew it was going to be bad, so I brought those korean pancake things because they're delicious, clementines, and flowers. His cousins told me what their grandma said later, but she doesn't really speak English, so she just said "Well, at least she's not black"... awkward. She basically just called me "white girl" the whole time and I wasn't really allowed to help in the kitchen. My father is a chef, and I can more than help, but.... well. Apparently, my SO's friend brought home an Indian girl and his family wouldn't let her sit on the furniture. They just kept on saying that she was going to leave brown marks on the furniture... in Korean.... but still. Like, people say that white people are racist... but I think in less diverse cultures... racism gets pretty intense, hahahaha.
I enjoyed reading your fiction, especially the part where they say the indian girl's gonna leave brown marks. That's pretty creative, and I would have never imagined such unreal reaction from Koreans. I know this, because I am Korean. Only very small children would possibly think that skin colour would come off. And of course, you don't really have white hair, do you? Unless you are elderly.
You can call it fiction all you like. Being Korean doesn't mean that you know what's going on in every person's head, what a vain thing to say. That would be like me implying that no white person would have ever said anything racist, because I don't think that way, and therefore no other white person could either. From what they told me about our friend's Indian girlfriend, it wasn't because they honestly thought someone's skin colour would come off, rather, because they had such a poor attitude towards her because of her skin colour. Mind blown right? People can be prejudice regardless of their race or ethnicity. As for people thinking that skin colour can come off. No, again, I don't think that they meant it in that way. However, since you are watching TL;DR, they have a section in their "Most awkward question our students asked us" video, where they recant how their students asked them if black people's colour would come off if they rubbed it. So yes, some people who aren't children have this notion. As for my hair, have you seen Icelandic, Norwegian, or any other Nordic peoples? Because yes, platinum blonde hair is something we're born with. Sometimes it fades to an ash blonde, sometimes to a golden, and sometimes it stays. The disadvantage being having to colour in your eyebrows. The other half of my family has red hair. What a childish concept to believe that hair colours other than your own could not exist. I had a more than annoying time having to bring in pictures of my family, and myself to up to 13 years old to show the military because they were trying to get me to dye my hair brown which no one has naturally in my family. I had to prove to them it was a natural colour as well, so I guess that bit of denial is not uncommon.
AyanaLinval I just wanted to clarify that Koreans are not so ignorant of the outside world. Koreans are not blocked from watching Hollywood movies which feature many different races, listening to hip hop music and other western genres, traveling abroad , attending Western universities in North America (yes, Canada) and Europe, or even immigrating abroad (US and Canada again) (like I did myself - I've seen a lot of white people, and I have never met or seen a person with white hair. But I will take your word, since I've never been to Iceland). Do you know how many Korean students study abroad each year? There is an entire industry catering to these people to prepare them to study abroad. So most Koreans are quite well-versed in racial differences. Korean media portray a lot of foreign contents. There are even TV shows that invite foreigners living in Korea to discuss their experiences. There are TV shows that feature interracial couples and show how they live. These shows portray many different races, including people with darker skins, marrying and having children with Korean individuals. They are all portrayed in a positive and delightful manner. Also, where I live now, a lot of Koreans are intermarrying with diverse races. It is somewhat of a mainstream thing here. So when I read comments like Koreans think skin colour comes off, or making overt racist comments of that nature, it seems so unrealistic to me. Of course, my own thinking does not represent or reflect what other people believe. BUt it is fair to say that I was born in Korea and lived with so many different Korean individuals in Korea and also where I live now that I can reasonably tell you what is common in my culture or what is not common. What you described there definitely does not conform to what is common or normal in Korean culture. I can tell you as a Korean person that what you described must be extremely extremely rare, if not entirely impossible. You wanna hear what is more surprising? I left Korea over a decade ago. So the cultural openness to foreigners that I described was already over a decade ago. Now people are even more aware of the outside world due to globalization and free trade agreements. It would be extremely unfair to bring up an isolated incident which is extremely rare, and tell it like it's such a common story to describe a group of people. It's like taking me to Ripley's Believe it or Not and telling me those displays are common and reflective of the Canadian landscape and peoples in Canada. Then I know that you are just bullshitting me, although I cannot deny that such freakish objects did exist. Therefore, Even if what you told me was true, its rarity and abnormality must be addressed. I also watched the part of this video where they said some students asked whether the skin colour would come off. I understood it to be from small children students. There was no mention of it being from a grown-up, was there? MOREOVER, we will have to take it for granted that whaever he/she said actually happened. I tend to be critical in my thinking, so I don't tend to believe in whatever I watch, hear, or read. After all, I have come across A LOT of trolling, misinformation, lies, and just straight-up bullshit on the internet, and I hope you can understand my critical thinking.
My boyfriend's family has lived in Canada in one of the world's most diverse cities hands down. I think only New York could come close, and they have lived there for decades. Being in contact with people of other races does not mean that people are suddenly going to be cured of ignorance, or discriminatory beliefs. With that logic, I could easily make every statement that you just said to me about any groups of Americans or Canadians. It goes without saying that both countries are far more diverse than Korea. Yet your argument doesn't carry through at all. There are plenty of racist people, white, black, native American, or Asian everywhere you go. To say, "Oh well, interracial couples, and other races are shown on T.V. in a positive light all the time on American T.V. Heck, the president is BLACK!, therefore racism doesn't exist, or at least is "unrealistic" to claim it occurs in American, or Canadian, or European societies." If you're truly thinking critically you would concider that before you continue down that line of thinking. Exposure, especially short term exposure is not going to instantly erase prejudice ideals. There are cultures that have lived side by side for thousands of years that still hate one another. Additionally, these guys have mentioned in plenty of their videos that the kids that they taught were in an older age group. Some old enough to be sneaking out of class, and some telling them that they've been having sex, which is also in the "awkward convo" video. Those are not little kids, those are teens old enough to understand concepts, yet they don't understand skin colour because of lack of exposure and preconceived stereotypes. I would never attempt to make such a boisterous claim that Canada is racism free just because I live in a tolerant neighbourhood, with diverse schools, politics, and media. So quite frankly it's shocking to hear someone make statements like yours. No, it doesn't feel good admitting that racism is a problem in Canada, that sexism is a problem in Canada. But straight up denial doesn't magically make it better. Calling someone a liar when they talk about prejudice they've seen, or experienced defiantly won't make it better, or stop existing altogether either. You can't just wish, or deny problems away.
First of all, my illustration of the Korean TV shows and the exposure of the foreigners in Korea does not imply that there is no racism in Korea. What it implies is that Koreans are so exposed to foriengers and different races that they are not so ignorant of racial issues. The amount of exposure ensures that Koreans would not be ignorant enough to believe that skin colour can come off. It is a separate and apart topic from the existence of racism in Korea. As a side note, racism does exist in Korea. There is no denying it. The fact that the portrayal of intermarriage was positive was just a side note, not intended to say that's how everyone in Korea feels. Secondly, you cannot disregard an insider's perspective to tell you what is normal and common in a group that you are not so familiar with. Especailly when your personal experience of a Korean culture is only limited to those that you have accessed through one person (your boyfriend) and the anecdotal evidence of what he told you. That is a hearsay at best. You are trying to justify your understanding of a group on the basis of the relationship that you have with one single member of the group. I, on the other hand, have had a lot broader and in-depth exposure of Korean culture than you and presumably your boyfriend (whom I assume to be one of the Canadian-born Koreans, who in general don't even speak Korean that well). My understanding is not limited to one person or one family. I can tell you what is common and mainstream in Korean culture. I understand what is a likely form of racism in Korean culture, and what you describe does not fit in. Like I said before, the mode of describing a person's skin colour and how it may come off, or any racist remarks based on such notion do not conform to Korean culture. They will more likely to comment on other aspects. In fairness, I would not say what you described did not happen. However, As I used the Ripley's Believe it or Not analogy, what is abnormal in a group and freakish must be addressed as such, and not told as an illustration of a group's common behaviour. As for these guys' story of a teacher saying how a student asked him/her whether his colour would come off, they never mentioned what group of students he/she was teaching. Martina and her husband might have mentioned before they taught adult groups, but this story in particular was not about them. It was story of someone else's experience. Therefore we have no information to conclude what group he/she was teaching. So don't be so foolish to make a conclusion that in fact this unnamed teacher was teaching adults. There is no reason to believe so. It would be indeed foolish to stick to an unlikely inference that an adult would be so ignorant to believe that skin colour would come off.
Just one correction...Koreans like Americans and when asked where I was from "oooohh America, very good, very good" was often the response...especially from the taxi drivers that were mentioned in the video. And nearly every time I asked Koreans where they would like to travel, the U.S. was either first or somewhere in the list. No need to pretend you're Canadian here. :) Thanks for the fun videos, guys. I've been back from Korea a year and somehow stumbled on you and it makes me feel a bit sentimental about the place.
Enticingly Anonymous Lol no. If Koreans were wannabe Caucasians, they would worship Europe, which is a way higher percentage of white people than America. Pretty much every country, not just Korea, kind of look up to America cuz of Hollywood, singers, athletes, etc.
I find it quite ironic how they can blame the concept of homosexuality on foreigners whereas in their country the K-Pop artist or celebrities are extremely homosexual like and feminine. Or maybe perhaps they are also blaming America for heavily influencing their pop music.
man, that's weird as hell, never heard of that. I've been to many places and never encountered this. (only been to asia once tho, maybe that's the reason...)
Don't be silly, they sweat. What a persons sweat smells like depends on what they eat and how healthy they are. Asians don't have as much body fat so they may not seem to sweat as much as the rest of us.
there are two types of sweat glades. the truth is that sweat from one type of sweat glade are loved by bacteria and the left over component is what smells. many Asians have very few of these types of sweat glades... still a bit unfair but that genetics for you.
i'm a korean. i've never heard those words about malaysians till now. most koreans think malaysia is one of very nice countries. but frankly it is real that a few koreans sometimes say like that some of filipinos are not well educated.. sorry for it. but actually koreans don't think so. most koreans think filipinos have a great humanity.
They way you tell how an American is trying pass off us a Canadian is they put a small flag on the backpack. A real Canadian carries a Tim Horton's travel mug around.
My parents and I got shamed on the subway when we went to Korea because I'm mixed and the ajumma didn't like that my dad was married to a black woman and kept asking if he hates Koreans and if it was the reason he married her
I have a korean american friend that was suprised when she saw me using deodorant. she was like "Aren't you asian? Asians don't have B.O." and I'm just like uhhh wellz then you're frkin lucky lol
+procrasTINAtion B.O is less common in East Asia, but not nonexistence (because of some mutation in a sweat gland gene). Though, I do believe it's practically nonexistent in Korea, but present in smaller frequencies elsewhere in East Asia.
I was so scared of my boyfriends parents in the beginning (especially since I am mixed arab/european and some Koreans think everyone with a scarf is besties with ISIS) But it was so different actually his parents were such sweethearts and openminded people! ah I love them hahaha never though I would get accepted so easily.
lje I know not all of them do, but I have been harassed for a long time by some korean creep until the korean police found out who he was etc. he made really weird comments about my religion and sexual comments about me X_X
카림살마 wow, that's messed up but that happens everywhere even where I'm from in the U.S.Happens all the time. I speak Spanish sometimes with my friends and family and I've been told not to speak Spanish,.and I tell them to cover their ears because this a free country... They just walk away lol.
i think for Korean people most of them are a lil uneducated when it comes to race, it should be talked about more often specially being black because they're very white and it's actually their beauty standards to have such pale white skin, i've seen this guy on Infinity Challenge he said he was bullied so much when he was younger cause his skin was slightly darker than everyone in the class. its really heartbreaking how much he suffered just because of that
+Shaden Saad True that. education of diversity should be more emphasized in Korea. Usually old generations don't even know what's offensive when it comes to race. Once I saw a Korean pastor call half African a mixed n***. Yes shocked and disappointed. Not only because he said that but the answer I got after I told him not to call him that. Which was 'WHY?' We sure are f*** up and have a long way to go.
Whenever loud korean grandmas talk on the phone, i feel like korean culture is subjected to respect, so they dont do anything, but in my opinion i will only respect the elders that are worth respecting so i get my phone out as well and start blaring out in english. XD
Don't worry. You can buy NIVEA deodorant everywhere. The best thing that's happened to smelly people anywhere. BTW, that stereotype about smelly foreigners is as old as Chosun dynasty (when foreigners DID smell, before the invention of showers and deodorants
That's what I am planning on doing, lots of deodorant and Canadian clothing. Good thing I have green eyes and brown hair too. I'm from Michigan and that's basically canada anyways.
***** truth! it took me one year and like 2 months but i think i'm finally getting thru to my korean boyfriends mom! not the dad tho.... but his mom is super cute taking pics of my bf when he's not watching and sending them to me^^
Sɛℓɛиɛ 〜月光の薔薇姫君〜 Yeah, but, have you spent time with actual Japanese people? I know it sounds good on paper, but in reality they're just as human as we are. They have a knack for gossip and racism, same as any other race, to be honest.
supposedlyreal Have you? Yes every race would have a say with another. The Japanese happen to be one of the nicest races. If you do have encountered a rude Japanese person I'm sure you would have gotten it worse in another country.
most foreigners will be treated very nicely in korea. some people might come to you and say hello. i saw that so many times. of course, if you act like a douche bag, they will beat you up. i'm talking about being drunk at clubs and stuff. i saw that a lot too. itewon and hongdae. damn. they give other good foreigners bad name.
***** for sure you can go to clubs but if you drinks non stop and act like the biggest idiot ever- you should not go to the club at all, I got invited a lot to karaoke bars or dance clubs, so people are pretty open AS LONG as you know how to behave.
same here ...that why I want to know how they think about latinos/Hispanic / chicanos/tejanos or anyone with a Spanish orgin.. (not including all latinos) or the races of different Hispanic. ..like some of us look white even with the eyes and the hair or you look brown. ..and we know how they feel towards the blacks doesn't matter what type of race sorry if I spoke to much .u. but I wanna know bc I'm planning to move there and hopefully study abroad there
+nini805 There isn't really a stereotype of Hispanics/Latinos because there aren't that many in Korea (I've never seen any hispanic/latinos in Korea tbh). People might stare at you but it wouldn't be because they have something against your race, it'd be just because you'd stand out in a crowd. Btw I'm a Korean New Zealander, I was raised in NZ and went to Korea recently and stayed there for a couple of years (and I have a Korean family) so I kinda know both Western and Korean perspectives.
+123 d yeah, a lot of first gen Latinos don't like to go to other countries; it's usually the second gens or the millenials that want to travel.....at least from what I've witnessed first hand. As for sticking out, I already do in America since they have this notion that ALL Mexicans are dark and shorter than 160 cm, whereas my family is from a part of Mexico that has a lot of Caucasian and Asian looking people that are 166 cm and above!
+jennifer hernandez true!! I think it's because Japan is more technologically advanced than most of the world, so it's a completely new concept to a lot of Mexicans.
lol "riding the white horse" okay well..I'm white and I wouldn't want to date a guy who only dates a white girl because he's cool and then marry a korean woman. like wtf? when you love someone, then you love someone right? ugh
Totally agree like whats up with that? The world is crazy like I dont mean that in like an offensive way but i just kinda dont understand well I know Korea is still kinda not so open I know it was way worse like now they are more open minded like not including North Korea xD i guess but I know theres no one place in the world where they dont follow their cultures and just live how they would want to while still respecting their families you know like love is love it doesnt matter who it is like where they are from I think that if they respect you and just freaking love you and care about you like what more could you want? Man you dont come across so many people like that..
I'm Korean and I'll have to admit that a lot of the stuff Simon and Martina said does exists in some ppl's minds T-T It's usually with the older generations though.
Whattt... Malaysians only come to Korea just to have a vacation or study. Maybe i will change my mind to study in Japan or Singapore next year. Bye Korea....
Yes. Most Malaysian are students, expat and tourist in korea, really a small group. I cant understand myself why Simon said that. He might really mixed up Malaysian with Indonesian which is a bigger group of foreigners working here in Korea
+TrizPaz Better get that video played again. It wasn't Simon's own perspective about Malaysians, it's what some Korean people told him about what they think of Malaysians that he only related to us through this video. But like what Martina said, not all Koreans think like that.
I am a new kpop fan and was an avid fan of JB. I have come to a realisation that when I like Korean boybands, they somehow make me feel insecure about myself . I heard that Koreans have their own definition of beauty which makes me insecure about meeting them at fanmeeting or anything because I feel like they will think of me as ugly. This video just made my insecurity a level higher.
***** I was just getting into the Korean stuff after I bought some goodies from Etude House but now I just feel depressed. x'D Not blaming you lol. Racism is sad.
These stereotypes are slowly becoming less common as Koreans get more used to more foreigners. I wouldn't let it put you off, Korea is still a great country, and the stereotypes won't change if Koreans don't see more people who break those stereotypes.
I know right they really didn't talk about Mexicans... only (mostly) White, and black. I wonder as well what they think about that. I am Mexican and I want to visit there someday, and is even studying the language for it.
Im Colombian-American when I lived in korea, girls thought I was really attractive. Some Koreans thought I was half koean. O: Overall anything is better than being black :|
oh my god! It must have been hard on you, guys! It's true that there are stereotypes and racism in every country. Asian countries just happen to be more traditional or conservative than Western countries
I am Japanese, I've faced many occasions of racism from Korean people, however much less frequently than my black or white friends. Luckily I am not living in Korea anymore,
I don't believe you, since many Japanese celebrities are popular in Korea. Plus, I know this Japanese student who did exchange in a Korean high school. Everyone liked him. A lot of Japanese tourists come to Korea, and most of them do not experience any racism. So either you are exaggerating, lying, or you did something personally to offend the locals there.
Woah what a fucktard, japan and china fucking sucks. One day japan is going to kill everyone because of your stupid chemicals, that your government say."oh yes yes, the water is Safe. Just gimmie the money. Gimmie the money." Basically Japan's government. -.- I hate japan
BillboardTopMVlyrics how can you just tell them that they haven't experienced racism. Where you there? no! Just because the people you know aren't racist doesnt mean one person was to them. Why are you being so rude to people in the comments as if korean people are better than every other race and everyone else is lower. So rude.
Jasminnows "Why are you being so rude to people in the comments as if korean people are better than every other race and everyone else is lower." First, point out how I was rude. Second, point out how my comment was "as if Koreans are better than any other race" You are a typical example of how shills operate to manufacture anti-Korean sentiments, just like 1991justforfun. You just created bullshit argument like "you are talking as if you are better than everyone else" when there is no basis for it, out of thin air. Any normal person will be able to read my comment and say there is no such meaning.
Holy shit... If north koreans think north americans are loud, and north americans think brazilian people are loud, a north korean could have an earblow with a brazilian person 😂😂😂😂
Racism aside, I think an important point to bring up is that what you see in Korean media is NOT what life in Korea is like. So many times I see foreigners fooled by kpop and kdrama thinking that Korea is one big fantasy land. Don't make huge life choices: wanting to be Korean, or wanting to move to Korea because you want to marry your Kpop idol or be a kpop idol. Its not the same thing. I'm just saying this because I personally have been getting more into Korean pop culture (dramas and pop music) but I stay grounded and have met so many people that seem to be brainwashed with this fantasy vision of Korea.
Random Ramblings For me it was originally that exact reason, but now that I absolutely despise living in America, I feel like S. Korea is the next best place for me to live in. Not only are the living expenses cheaper there, but it’s less violent. I’m tired of the homicides every single day here, and I’m glad that it’s not very often that it happens there. I’m scared for my life living in America.
le Van only thing about that is I don’t wanna live there. I’m not motivated to move over there. My top 3 choices are S. Korea, Japan, and Thailand. There’s just something about Asian countries that intrigues me and idk why. It just feels like I’m meant to live there with no explanation.
@@brooke.nelson If I had to pick one of those countries, it would be Thailand for its people. Anyways I hope you find your way to your fav homeland soon.
soooo, since i'm black, i'll wait till korea is more....exposed and well rounded idk how dey will treat a jamaican :/ ....sad tho JAPAN & CHINA it is! :D
I think Korea is over-exposed as it is. The more exposure will make them more racist. They are already being more aware of the downsides of having foreigners in their country, such as higher crime and dirty neighbourhoods. However, I have a sad news for you: Japan and China are far more racist than Korea. Believe me on this. Also, just give you something to think about: are Jamaicans so racist toward other non-white racist because they have not been so "exposed and well-rounded"? Jamaicans are very well-known to be racist against their own Chinese communities.
BillboardTopMVlyrics That's not true! I've been to Japan stayed with Japanese families in and around Tokyo, they are all very nice and respectful in Japan, and I am a Black man. China, idk but Japan is fine.
I'm from Brazil and we got a lot of races...so, i has never saw racism...but i think racism it isn´t a country problem, it´s person to person .....(hmm...my english...hahaha...I´m learning ok?!...hahaha)
I'm Korean and I've faced racism in Korea because apparently I look like a foreigner.....but I'm Korean.... I don't even know. This mother and daughter were commenting about me on the subway and saying really rude things but they didn't know I could understand them.
That happened to me when someone was talking junk about my foreigner clothing: sweatpants and sweatshirt; and i was acting like i couldn't hear them and once they started talking more i got my phone, acted like i called my mom, and talked to her in fluent korean. The people who were talking junk looked so surprised and when I got off the bus, i said hard english words saying, "well why don't you have a nice day" but they couldn't understand me so they were like in complete shock. Lol it was so great.
its kinda riddiculous with all those plastic surgeries to look more western like Oo even when i think most asians, never mind koreans, look great with natural native faces n bodies... ehhh its really double standard.
The reason Koreans and many Japanese don't have a body odor smell is due to the prevalence of a variant in The ABCC11 gene, which controls the number of apocrine sweat glands you have. the gene variant korean and japanese have means they have fewer apocrine sweat glands compared to people of other descent, and the lack of these glands make East Asians less prone to body odor. it affects apocrine sweat glands by reducing secretion of odorous molecules and its precursors.
Everything mentioned is true. I hate the old people here, and I hate how racist and judgemental people are here. I also hate how vain people are, and how they won't stop staring at themselves in public. I've been three years now, so I just kinda feel like voicing my frustrations. I also hate, like they said, when fucking old people stare at me and my wife, who's Korean, with a disapproving look. Will sure as hell not be raising my kids here. Back to New Zealand for that. Sorry for any offence, but its my experience.
I find the stereotype about Filipinos ironic, because I'm from the Philippines, and the last time I visited (I live in Canada), there are so many Koreans studying in the Philippines. Most even have Filipino tutors teaching them English, or studying English through online tutoring. Why study in Philippines or get Filipino tutors if they think Filipinos are uneducated? What does that say about those Koreans who think we're uneducated?
Have you attended school in the Philippines? There are at least a couple Koreans in every class. I've had Korean classmates in my school back in the Phils, and everywhere you look in campus you will see Koreans. Even though they may attend schools run by Koreans, most tutors or teachers are still Filipinos.
It's because the Philippines as a country is economically sub-par. Plus you guys are usually dark and have mixed spanish blood, which makes Korean people see Filipinos as "dark" Asians or something racist like that. It's like how white people think black people are uneducated.
Koreans judge people by the status of the country they come from, so the look at the economy, and how developed the country is. So that means Koreans look more highly towards Germans as opposed to Spanish. Also many koreans get their stereotypes from America since so many koreans live in America, so take all the Stereotypes Americans have and square it^2. The simple answer would be is your GDP per capita higher or lower, they will treat you accordingly.
Sure, it ist the GDP, but it can also be the colour of the skin (the whiter the better), or else some historical memories (hence the aversion against Japanese), and maybe the grade of knowledge of a foreign culture, too (that may be the case with German in contrast to, say, Spanish or Swedish cultures). However, as it is mentioned in the video: "Not everyone in Korea is like this." :)
Shinyoung Park I don't think Koreans are narrow-minded. Judging people by the status of the country is perfectly understandable. I'm not saying it is fine. I am only saying it makes sense perfectly.
Big Nutjob I was visiting a friend in Korea and her father always ask about my family's economical situation. Like how much do I spend in Korea, how much does my father and my mother get per month, the most uncomfortable part is when he asked which one of my parents income is more than the other. Ofcourse not only Koreans are like this, but it was my first time getting asked about that and it felt very uncomfortable.
I'm from the Philippines and it's quite surprising that there are Koreans who think this way about Filipinos when in fact Koreans are everywhere and even go to schools/ universities, have businesses here and all.
LOL people it's ridiculous to let these stereotypes deter you from coming to Korea. Base it off your own personal experiences, not an oversimplified view that categorizes an entire culture..... Oh & the stereotype about Chinese people not being very hygienic, a part of that comes from the rise of mainland Chinese immigrants usually of the laboring class. It also taps into the stereotype that Chinese people don't shower very often. If anyone remembers, Fei from Miss A talked about how when she first came to Korea, people would genuinely ask her if she only showered once a week. Possibly another reason comes from the bad rep Chinese tourists have. Cases of rude behavior, publicly defecating and urinating... yeaa.... But obviously not everyone thinks this way.
+Iz C a lot of prejudice, stereotypes and preconceptions towards races / religions / countries are determined by experiences and impressions at first encounters. but unfortunately it seems like a lot of tourists, expats and also immigrants don't think about that and act like shit... instead of try to build a good rep for ppl of their heritage.
There's ignorance in every country. Chinese people have stereotypes about Koreans too. It's everywhere. But asking a person if they fit into the stereotype of their race in your country is rude and ignorant... Poor Fei.
Ohhh M'lady! Gazing into your eyes awakens deep and exciting emotions. The things I would love to share with you in our love motel, snuggling by the empty pizza box with cookie crumbs scattered on the bed covers.
So I guess the gist of this for Americans is: Tourists in Korea = Europeans in the US + Californians in the southern US Asian foreigners in Korea = Mexicans in the US Asian guy, white girl in Korea = white guy, black girl in the US Asian girl, white guy in Korea = black guy, white girl in the US black people in Korea = black people in the deep south
***** not if that white girl is in asia because she loves asian people or culture or kpop, because she's looking for an asian invasion in her pants lol.
***** yeah everyone likes the unknown or something exotic.... Well not everyone but a lot. Americans are split, there's a lot of Americans who love Europeans & other foreigners because they are open minded and want to get to know your culture & then their are Americans/ass holes, who are just plain ignorant to anyone & everything. So i guess its similar everywhere on how people can act. But american girls love a guy with a cool sexy accent especially British, so if your from England your gonna get a ton of attention, especially if you are decently good looking & at least slightly cool.
what about mexicans in the us? well most movies i've watched, americans doesnt really like mexican people and they tend to stereotype mexicans as disgusting people
azrin13th in my experience the american stereotype is that mexicans are uneducated, cannot speak english, are poor, have too many children, are there illegally and are in gangs. The opinions vary from place to place. I grew up in new england in an overwhelming white middle class neighborhood and most people disliked mexicans. i moved super close to miami, florida (huge mexican population) and no one had anything negative to say about mexicans. The US is huge and opinions will vary
I'm a Danish guy, and I almost feel left out due to not knowing any real stereotypes about other nationalities. Or.. At least nothing negative or anything people actually believe. For example, Germans are very punctual and 'Ordnung muss sein' and all that, but it's just some silly nonsense. Firstly, it's a positive stereotype and secondly, no one actually believes it's a general thing that applies to all Germans. I've been drinking with several Germans during my life, and there was very little 'Ordnung' there. Germans are as different as us Danes. ;) It's the same with the typical 'Americans are stupid' thing. We all know the stereotype, but I've never met anyone who honestly believe that all Americans are morons. lol It's just another silly thing that some people say, but mostly in a teasing sort of manner, since they don't actually believe it. Swedish people are always drunk. No one believes that either, but it's because of the alcohol prices in Sweden. They're insane. So a lot of Swedes people from across the sound will go to Copenhagen (Our capital) to drink and get supplies. So it's not hard to find drunk Swedes in Copenhagen. But again.. It's not really anything negative. It's just a silly teasing kind of thing. No one minds, no one hates the Swedes, Danes are drunk in Copenhagen as well.. lol Other than that I don't really know any stereotypes about other nationalities I think. I don't know any for Koreans, Chinese, French, English, South African, Malaysian etc. etc. We have no real stereotypes for anyone I think.. Or maybe I'm just out of the racism-loop. Who knows. :p
MissCaraMint Yes.... i moved to Sweden because we even got cheap house here and all the other students think im rich because i get 5000 NOK because i live alone studying in another country but my father earns 12000 NOK and mother 13000 NOK because she cant work and get money from the state..... norway got to expencive so my mom uses a house here in sweden as "summer" house (50% of the year). i wanna move to korea because its so much better and cheaper than even sweden :O
Well, I live in Quebec, and most English-Canadians visiting will often think we are snooty and Euro. But we aren't ;-; It's just that, when you come into Quebec without knowing French, natives are bound to treat you a bit differently xD
I believe in Korea like in my county where I was born( I'm from Bosnia) people aren't aware that it's bad to be a racist...they don't think that they can hurt somebody with their words...I mean the whole asian music industry is racist or have you seen a white or black person in any of the bands but they still like to be hip hop and wear the fashion of african americans (like CL, G-Dragon etc.)...some people will consider that as racist...I remember when some of the black atists bashed Iggy Azalea( not a fan of hers) because she was "acting" black even trough she is white but if cute Asians act black that's ok...I believe that we are all a little bit racist don't you think?
There are no black or white people in the Korean music industry because there are hardly any white or black people in Korea (small percent of the population), and how many of them are fluent enough in Korean and talented enough in music and have the drive to become singers?? That has nothing to do with racism. If anything, why are there no Asian artists in American mainstream music, even though the percentage of Asians in America is way higher than percentage of white or black people in Korea?
fedfoofy western societies don't really value asian americans or asians in pop culture fully seriously or when they do come through, they may have went through a lot of ridicule and stereotypical acting roles to reach their spot. it's not easy for anyone to pop up to be an actor, singer without money and the right connections or if you have a particular talent that is eyecatching
This video is slightly misleading, because Koreans like America, although it depends on individuals political view, but America is always the most liked country in Korea.
There is a lot of racism in Australia and I've dealt with racism my whole life (I'm Aboriginal). Im Pretty good at dealing with people who are miss informed and just don't know but if someone asked me if my skin colour washes off or colours a pool, I would really find it hard to not freak out and yell at them. I defiantly understand that they just don't know but I guess because I've grown up with it my brain would only register it as major offensive racism. Plus I'm a few of those things. I'm mixed, I'm chubby with big breasts and a large bottom.
+SPrincess97 Yeah it's true that there is a lot of raicism here in Australia, especially with the straight up aussie slanging people though not all of them are rude i've had a lot of experience with them shouting in buses and making racist slurs
+BTS ARMY it's horrible, there's so much racism here but NO ONE is trying to address it,I had kids be blatantly racist tome in high school, infront of teachers, and the teachers would just stare at me like " what do you want me to do?"
Well, like the intuitive say......the people from cities will begin to get very bad immune systems very shortly in comparison to country folk. Much of that is due to bad attitudes and energy. They reap what they sew. That includes the emotional, etheric, spiritual, and mental bodies as well as physical. Meaning plastic surgery is not an indication of "good health", its the things you can't see. In fact, having a good attitude and being positive is the only thing that will make you successful in the future. No matter their country of origin, they will receive the same fate as humanity as a whole has = change to love OR DIE!!!
That's a very attractive description you dropped there your highness. But if someone asked me if my light brown skin color washed off in the pool, I wouldn't get mad, but I would begin treating them like they have a learning disability.
***** i dont think any of us are saying that every individual is...just that every( race)and i hate that use of the word because their is only 1 race of ppls better to say every ethinc group is.
i was drinking soda *out of a coffee mug because i can't find any good cups in my house* and when 4:51 came up the soda shot up into my nose and i just collapsed onto the floor fun times
Great video. im an African American man living in Korea with a somewhat athletic build and i must say most Koreans have been extremely nice 2 me. For some reason little Korean boys love no, they see me and wave at me. (not in a weird way (
A Mosby She wasn't being rude I think she sincerely was curious & wanted to know what black skin felt like... I just use the term ajuma to describe an older Korean woman
Yn Park Yeah, I understand it's different. It was just bizarre to me because I grew up around all cultures and colors of people so I'm used to it. All our skin is the same xD
I know that everyone isn't like how you said but now it makes me uneasy >~< I'm black and I have hopes of going there one day. I was just wondering if you guys know if they have a stereotype of black girls. I'm just trying to prepare myself for whenever I do go there in the future because I don't want people to look down on me or anything like that.
Yeah, people have stereptypes everywhere. My mom is caucassian and my dad is black (african american?), wherever, and just last year I was told by a co-worker that I had 'an african person kind of face', and it's was really really weird, it's true but, still I found it a bit racist... but now that I come to think about it again, it wasn't. I like my face, and it's rude when people come to me and make absurd comments about my nose and stuff like that. I live in latin-america! like, does it get more diverse than that? I don't think so, that's why I kinda understand the korean stereotypes, seems like a mix between curiosity and false rumors to me. The point is that EVERYONE is different! when you want everyone to look alike, is when the plastic cirgury takes place, we must accept the diversity and be proud of it! that's when racial stereotypes will be gone for good.
Everyone, don't worry so much about it. South Korea is beginning to open up to the world, someday this kind of situation will no longer exist, it may take several years, probably you will be dead, BUT someday your grandchildren will be able to visit South Korea whatever their color, race or country.
I'm Korean and that black skin thing is new to me. that was shocking... maybe just among little kids who haven't encountered black people in their lives or maybe one or two. And that riding the white horse thing is usually among stupid, uneducated teens and guys even if that maybe used widely only in internet as 백마 in korean but if you use that term in public, almost ALL people will blame you or look down on you for being such a sexist and racist
***** racist is considered bad everywhere. I just think in some countries including south korea, people don't really understand the concept of racism well. meaning that some people being racists, but they don't even realize they are being racists and offensive.
***** I can definitely tell you that things have been changing and it will be different in the future for sure. even the older generations think the same.
I think they will just get confused. Asians don't know where Mexico is or what nationality is Mexican. At least that what happened to me when I first came to USA.
I'm Puerto Rican American, they just group me in with white people in the winter when I'm lighter, and black people in the summer when I tan a bit more. Most people honestly don't know that Hispanic people exist in the States.
This was a barrel of laughs, i want to be an English teacher like u guys and im so looking forward to teasing people with my STDs LOL anyways Australia has been labeled the most racist country in the world which is bs but i think thats because we have really two races in australia, the aboriginals and foreign descendant australians and there have been a lot of issues between the two and we're getting better, just a lot of misunderstanding etc we really are good light hearted people, having a sense of humor is a good attribute here in aus
I think most people are good at heart, but everyone's got a bad reputation with someone. I think we'd be hard pressed to find a country that didn't have at least some people who thought unflattering things about them.
It's a lot better these days, but even just a few decades ago, Australia was hella racist. In the RMIT cafeteria during the 90s recession, people were shouting at foreign students, "go home" and "stop stealing our jobs" One day, I got sick of that shit, flipped a table, and started ranting. Started with how the exorbitant foreign students' fees were paying for their almost free education, and ending with Australian companies needing the best they can find to turn a profit - if they didn't want their jobs stolen, they'd do themselves a favour and blame their own parents for their stupidity. That was in the middle of an internationally renowned centre of tertiary education. Thought I had it tough ... then I heard stories about the 60s, and how some Italian immigrants were getting underpaid by 40%, not being able to find a place to rent - because of landlords refusing tenants on the basis of race, getting beat up in the streets because their presence made the neighbourhood look bad ... These days, while racism is not as great an issue, it's still around. There's a reason no-one wearing a hijab goes to Melbourne's western suburbs. As for myself, I'm getting too old to get mixed up in shit. I'm just happy to let time sort stuff out ... well ... unless 14K decide they want a chunk of the eastern suburbs or something. Then some shit might go down where nobody wants the cops involved. All the old money from different races having their respective connections ... times may have changed, but people remember.
"riding the white horse" made me laugh so hard I fell off my bed. I think i'd more so just laugh at these statements if I heard them on the street more so than be offended.
I'm mexican too, but live in Canada. I've been to korea twice and my feeling is that they love foreigners in general. Also, I stayed with my korean friends' parents and they treated me like a queen. I've never felt discriminated at all, on the contrary, they were so interested in me and I even made some friends staying at hostels.
Hey Kimchi guys, am a black guy from the UK and Norway, (ethnically african, obviously) anyway, just wan to know their take on blacks,...heading there soon..just to avoid any culture clashes thanks... recent subscriber
It's not your typical western idea of racism you expect, where you are deemed inferior or superior, and predisposed to do certain behaviors by the darkness of your skin. Eastern's take on sin is either the curiosity or the fear of something different, which is in every human being. Like encountering a exotic foreign fruit for the first time, not knowing whether it's poisonous or safe, not being used to the smell or the taste of it at first but you think of it as normal when you see it everyday. Word of caution though; Martina was talking to teenagers and obviously the answers you get are very weird and imaginative (black skin rubbing off in water? wtf?). Of course, with the modern day came globalization, and some Koreans are infected with the western idea of racism, which is stupid because it's self destructive. Luckily this doesn't apply to all Koreans, but you will encounter a few in metropolitan areas with heavy globalization and western influence. Asians are darker than white westerners, and if an Asian accepts the western concept of racism, then you are automatically placing yourself underneath the white westerners. But for some Koreans somehow this makes sense because seeing how Americans have the nuclear bomb and how they won WW2, they see white Americans as superior and embrace anything white and western. But for the most part majority of Koreans aren't affected by western racism, and holds the 'exotic foreign fruit' view towards people with different skin tones. In fact it's not too uncommon to see a black man on Korean television, and nobody will think much of it as long as the person speaks Korean and eats Korean food. It's usually foreigners who refuse to assimilate to local culture and 'act foreign' who Koreans have problems with. You'll be surprised how quickly Koreans will accept you into their world as long as you make efforts to live Korean (Eat the food, speak the language).
About B.O. East Asians (Chinese, Koreans, and Japanese) have fewer apocrine sweat glands compared to people of other descent, and the lack of these glands make East Asians less prone to body odor.[13][14] The reduction in body odor and sweating may be due to adaptation to colder climates by their ancient Northeast Asian ancestors.[15] Axillary odor is known to be determined by the ABCC11 gene that also codes the type of earwax one has.[15][16] Most of the population secrete "wet" earwax, however, East Asians are genetically predisposed for the allele that codes the "dry" type earwax, associated with a reduction in axillary odor.[15] The non-functional ABCC11 allele-predominant amongst East Asians by 80-95%-affects apocrine sweat glands by reducing production and secretion of odorant compounds commonly found in the perspiration of other ancestral groups.[17] This is due to a 538G>A SNP in the ABCC11 gene, which causes a loss in body odor in people who are specifically homozygous for it.[18] (WIKIPEDIA)
Really? Then try riding a public bus in either / all those countries during the summer when the air con in the bus is inoperative and it has a full load of passengers.
What about Latinos? Like Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, etc? I remember this one time when I went to meet my now ex Korean bf's mom she just looked at me up and down and was like "are you Mexican? Wow you are tall" then went to go talk to her friend about me in Korean. Awkward as hell.
OMG THE WHITE HORSE THING, I flipped out that is so... Hilariously offensive, because I'm a white girl and I find Korean guys attractive and also that explained the age long question I've had about why GD and TOP thought it was so funny when Seungri said he wanted to be a white horse...
+kit katty If you meant White when you said American (because American isn't a race) Koreans would have no idea what race you are. They'd just think you're a foreigner. They might think you're White? Maybe?
123 d wll i mean, i was born in america, and my parents and most family members are from southeast asia so yea sorry about that, sometimes, I can make stuff very confusing
+Xiumin Kicks You're not half American or half Southeast Asian. You're wholly American by nationality (if you still live there) and wholly Southeast Asian by ancestry.
So basically White and Black people if you will, get a lot of crap, Do us Americans of Hispanic descent, get a pass? Or What do they think about us? I'm actually interested on hearing an answer. lol. Just curious.
Assuming you didn't hear an answer, here it is. First, they don't get a lot of crap, if they do, it would be from old people. I would say Latinos have it worse than others.
Last time when I go to Korea.. I feel kinda alien from other space, somehow when I visit some place I feel i'm not very welcome, few people try to abuse me, so that's it.. just wanna go home and visit other asian country that more warm on welcoming, such as Thailand, Indonesia or maybe Japan.
Thailand? Are you freaking serious? That's the first country to mention? Over 2000 foreigners gets murdered every year in Thailand. You are really going to be welcomed in Thailand because they want to kill you?
Candy Cane I wouldn't be so sure about Indonesia either. How about face full of bomb going off in the middle of Australian tourists filled nightclub? In Japan they have a celebrity food critic who murdered and ate his classmate in France. You are much safer here in South Korea than in Washington DC. That my friend is a fact.
Are you serious ? safe in South Korea ?? so u're saying pervert taxi driver, crazy phedophile, and Racist looking shit to me and all of that worse stuff is a meaning of save ? and I know about blood money too.. some guy abusing me and police settle the problem with cash, so don't give me that bullshit and fuck that country !!
Candy Cane Well I think that's extremely stupid to think like that. But I'm very sure you'll run into pervert taxi drivers crazy pedophiles and all of the above and below in other countries too. I live in Seattle and I think I'm much safer in South Korea than here. People around here smoke weird drugs too and it's really creepy. This place is not safe at all traveling by yourself for tourists. :) Not true! Evenwith 2000 foreigners murdered in Thailand that's still very low figure if you consider 8million tourists visiting Thailand every year. 2000 death out of 8 million is lower than US highway safety records they claim. :)
I think korean people see hispanics as a crazily energetic partying race. just top of my head, soccer, salsa dancing, spicy food, and tons of festivals would be some stereotypical images of hispanics korean people might have.
I’m always honest about being an American abroad even if it’s not popular in a given place. I figure if they know an American who’s a decent human, it’ll make them realize not all Americans are red hat wearing, burger eating, loud talking, racists. That’s been an assumption made about me in Australia.
My mom asked her black boy friend when she was a teenager if his skin burned or got darker from the sun. Luckily, he wasn't offended and knew she was just asking out of curiosity and laughed it off. xD
I cracked up at the Obama part :D omg ahahahaha as a black female I found that funny lol kids do say the craziest things. And you're right, every country has their stereotypes haha
Okay so just pretend you're Canadian in Korea. Got it.
+Cecil Anahz That's exactly what I thought, haha. I'll probably brandish a Canadian flag when I go there as well.
Lauren Smith hahahahaha your comment made my day XD I wonder what Koreans think about hispanics..
+Whyilove Ari HAHAHAHAHAH ME TOO from Montreal you?
***** oh cool
+Zoey's Galaxy xx O_O Nani?!

I just wanted to clarify that Koreans are not so ignorant of the outside world.
Maybe they were fluffing them up by saying that about Americans since they're Canadian.
I find it quite ironic how they can blame the concept of homosexuality on foreigners whereas in their country the K-Pop artist or celebrities are extremely homosexual like and feminine. Or maybe perhaps they are also blaming America for heavily influencing their pop music.
wait, they don't sweat? wtf? thought that was a human thing, not just a "white" thing...
i´m human and not korean and i´m don´t sweat, actually i don't smell...and now i think is really weird D:
man, that's weird as hell, never heard of that. I've been to many places and never encountered this. (only been to asia once tho, maybe that's the reason...)
Don't be silly, they sweat. What a persons sweat smells like depends on what they eat and how healthy they are. Asians don't have as much body fat so they may not seem to sweat as much as the rest of us.
there are two types of sweat glades. the truth is that sweat from one type of sweat glade are loved by bacteria and the left over component is what smells. many Asians have very few of these types of sweat glades... still a bit unfair but that genetics for you.
thank you guys for explaining a bit! was really confused for a while...
Thanks for being so honest about it! It sounds like the same fears every country has with other cultures tbh.
You guys are so awesome! Thank you for being so hilarious and informative 😂😁
+Isla McKenzie I second that
LOL as a Chinese-Canadian living in Toronto, I am often asked the "where are you from, from" question
In Cracow we have a lot of English tourists. They are really loud. Sometimes foreigners just behave like this.
i'm a korean. i've never heard those words about malaysians till now. most koreans think malaysia is one of very nice countries. but frankly it is real that a few koreans sometimes say like that some of filipinos are not well educated.. sorry for it. but actually koreans don't think so. most koreans think filipinos have a great humanity.
Yeah i think korean people are so respectful.
Very good video. Thanks.
They way you tell how an American is trying pass off us a Canadian is they put a small flag on the backpack. A real Canadian carries a Tim Horton's travel mug around.
My parents and I got shamed on the subway when we went to Korea because I'm mixed and the ajumma didn't like that my dad was married to a black woman and kept asking if he hates Koreans and if it was the reason he married her
채연정 I'm sorry that happened to you :(
I have a korean american friend that was suprised when she saw me using deodorant. she was like "Aren't you asian? Asians don't have B.O." and I'm just like uhhh wellz then you're frkin lucky lol
+procrasTINAtion B.O is less common in East Asia, but not nonexistence (because of some mutation in a sweat gland gene). Though, I do believe it's practically nonexistent in Korea, but present in smaller frequencies elsewhere in East Asia.
***** It means, "Bad Odor".
+Prince Asim It's body odor
Selina Krazie Oh yeah. My bad.
😂😂😂😂
"riding the white horse" I SNORTED SO HARD OMFG IM LAUGHING
Even Europeans think Americans are loud. lol
Dutch Eve And I never understood that bc many Europeans are loud, too.
@@chiaraippoliti as a European (Dutchie) I can confirm, we loud af but too cocky to admit
I'm American and people always are so surprised because I am not loud and stupid. they think I'm from Europe..
And annoying. At times. Not always. Sometimes.
I was so scared of my boyfriends parents in the beginning (especially since I am mixed arab/european and some Koreans think everyone with a scarf is besties with ISIS) But it was so different actually his parents were such sweethearts and openminded people! ah I love them hahaha never though I would get accepted so easily.
that's nice to hear, best of luck to you :)
Karen Rodriguez aw that's so nice♡ thank you very much♡♡
Although there might be some misconceptions due to the media these days, Koreans don't think badly about muslims.
lje
I know not all of them do, but I have been harassed for a long time by some korean creep until the korean police found out who he was etc. he made really weird comments about my religion and sexual comments about me X_X
카림살마 wow, that's messed up but that happens everywhere even where I'm from in the U.S.Happens all the time. I speak Spanish sometimes with my friends and family and I've been told not to speak Spanish,.and I tell them to cover their ears because this a free country... They just walk away lol.
As a Americanized korean I want to wear all USA shirts and army shirts just to spite people
i think for Korean people most of them are a lil uneducated when it comes to race, it should be talked about more often specially being black because they're very white and it's actually their beauty standards to have such pale white skin, i've seen this guy on Infinity Challenge he said he was bullied so much when he was younger cause his skin was slightly darker than everyone in the class. its really heartbreaking how much he suffered just because of that
+Shaden Saad True that. education of diversity should be more emphasized in Korea.
Still more educated than USA.... God they cant even find US on a world map
+Colonel Gayfur lol not actually true if you go to school and pass but like ok
+Colonel Gayfur ...lol what?
Not quite. Korea is not as diversified as Canada/USA that's why these simple things are of great deal to them.
Whenever loud korean grandmas talk on the phone, i feel like korean culture is subjected to respect, so they dont do anything, but in my opinion i will only respect the elders that are worth respecting so i get my phone out as well and start blaring out in english. XD
Haha so it is a thing, my grandmas like that too
Only my father's side grandma does that
imo, u should just respect other ppl's culture if you're a foreigner on someone's home-turf.
Bad ear causes you to speak loud... Elderlies are not being rude... they are just trying to communicate ㅠㅠ
noob168 but i am not a foreigner, i am korean... I just dont like koreans.... that doesnt make sense
Well, Korea, sorry I was born in America, I'll be more careful next time -_-
When I go to Korea, I'm bringing 5 pounds of deodorant and a Canadian flag.
Don't worry. You can buy NIVEA deodorant everywhere. The best thing that's happened to smelly people anywhere. BTW, that stereotype about smelly foreigners is as old as Chosun dynasty (when foreigners DID smell, before the invention of showers and deodorants
hahahhahahahhaha
That's what I am planning on doing, lots of deodorant and Canadian clothing. Good thing I have green eyes and brown hair too. I'm from Michigan and that's basically canada anyways.
I need to stock up on those Canadian Flag stickers & stick them everywhere if I decide to go to S. Korea to teach xD
Christine Louise I know it wasn't the point of your post but I have to say as a Michigander we are as much part of the states as any other state.
foreign kpop fans be sad to hear that they dont rlly marry other races because that means they wont be able to marry their bias 😭😭😭 " me"
kaththebear Ikr especially the "Oppa is MINE you biiiitch" fans
especially EXO ;u ;
***** truth! it took me one year and like 2 months but i think i'm finally getting thru to my korean boyfriends mom! not the dad tho.... but his mom is super cute taking pics of my bf when he's not watching and sending them to me^^
***** soo... their parents decide if their kids can marry someone? If so, then wow. wow. okay. what the fuck. poor kids.
***** oh okay thank you... good thing I'm a girl then lol
Well then I'm going to be Canadian when I come to Korea
You're not good enough to be Canadian
I was just joking I have some korean blood in me from my dad's father so I don't think being American would be a problem.
Lol sure what color so we have seep rate hair colors
Lmao "You must be obama" XD
Okay.. so dont try to date korean guys, and dont go to korea at all. Okay okay. Cool.
Marlena Powers exactly what i'm thinking lol. i'd rather go to japan where everyone is polite and genuinely nice.
Sɛℓɛиɛ 〜月光の薔薇姫君〜 Genuinely? I'm pretty sure it's all fake.
supposedlyreal I don't think so. It's part of their culture and I've read about their history.
Youll be treated nicely in korea if your white... they're not that nice now.
Can you ask what they think of Latinos/Hispanics? I'm curious because I'm planning on moving to Korea in the next 2 years or so.
same here ...that why I want to know how they think about latinos/Hispanic / chicanos/tejanos or anyone with a Spanish orgin.. (not including all latinos) or the races of different Hispanic. ..like some of us look white even with the eyes and the hair or you look brown. ..and we know how they feel towards the blacks doesn't matter what type of race
sorry if I spoke to much .u. but I wanna know bc I'm planning to move there and hopefully study abroad there
+nini805 There isn't really a stereotype of Hispanics/Latinos because there aren't that many in Korea (I've never seen any hispanic/latinos in Korea tbh).
***** I witness that also but majority of the Mexican goes to Japan than they do to Korea😧
+jennifer hernandez true!! I think it's because Japan is more technologically advanced than most of the world, so it's a completely new concept to a lot of Mexicans.
umm...... I'm Filipino and i'm thinking of studying in korea, but i'm really smart and i don't dress haggard, do you think i'll survive?
if you can speak english well and know korean very well..that's a plus
Yep actually I Grew up and i'm Living in Australia :)
msg me, and lets chat on facebook. i will tell you something
it will be ok, but just keep in mind everyone will consider you below them, even people "below" you.
I'm a Malaysian.. Do you think I'll survive? >
lol "riding the white horse" okay well..I'm white and I wouldn't want to date a guy who only dates a white girl because he's cool and then marry a korean woman. like wtf? when you love someone, then you love someone right? ugh
It's a little more complex than that unfortunately, as a lady in that kind of situation. :(
Korean guys like to show off their white girlfriends like trophies
Totally agree like whats up with that? The world is crazy like I dont mean that in like an offensive way but i just kinda dont understand well I know Korea is still kinda not so open I know it was way worse like now they are more open minded like not including North Korea xD i guess but I know theres no one place in the world where they dont follow their cultures and just live how they would want to while still respecting their families you know like love is love it doesnt matter who it is like where they are from I think that if they respect you and just freaking love you and care about you like what more could you want? Man you dont come across so many people like that..
Every country has a stereotype lol
That is what they said in the video.
And Norwegian subtitles are up, too! Wow. Thank you!
I'm Korean and I'll have to admit that a lot of the stuff Simon and Martina said does exists in some ppl's minds T-T It's usually with the older generations though.
Yeah, I also think so.
The new Generation is different.
Whattt... Malaysians only come to Korea just to have a vacation or study. Maybe i will change my mind to study in Japan or Singapore next year. Bye Korea....
Honey I'm pretty sure it's the same. I heard it's like worst in china racism idk if that's true
I know right! They can be really annoying sometimes!
I mean like JB, he has never really mentioned his ideal type.
Uneducated? Filipinos? Koreans go here in our country to study English. And mostly Koreans really struggle to speak the English language.
Really they don't struggle to eat 3 times a day but Korea's elderly poverty rate is highest among OECD countries?
Ara Kim I'm Filipino too but it's alright dear it's just a prejudice. :>
Speaking Good English doesn't mean you are educated.
French subtitles are now up! Thank you for the help!
yay
+Simon and Martina Merci ! So thanks to you I know that my boyfriend is riding a white horse ... so classy !!
Where am I? How did I get here? What is this? Who are these people? I need an adult.
I'm not sure what I clicked to get here or who you 2 are but I found the video interesting and amusing. Also I like the pink hair.
I wonder what Koreans think of Mexicans
I know right they really didn't talk about Mexicans... only (mostly) White, and black.
I wonder as well what they think about that. I am Mexican and I want to visit there someday, and is even studying the language for it.
Me too! ^^
Probably not enough exposure to mexicans and their culture to form any prejudice.
Im Colombian-American when I lived in korea, girls thought I was really attractive. Some Koreans thought I was half koean. O: Overall anything is better than being black :|
endy s Oh really?? that's great... How far have you gone in you Korean skills? XD
oh my god! It must have been hard on you, guys! It's true that there are stereotypes and racism in every country. Asian countries just happen to be more traditional or conservative than Western countries
Thank Heaven US put racism to rest at the end of the Civil War! Go 'Murica!
I kid I kid :)
lol! Have my like.
So rude.
Jasminnows
"Why are you being so rude to people in the comments as if korean people are better than every other race and everyone else is lower."
First, point out how I was rude.
Second, point out how my comment was "as if Koreans are better than any other race"
You are a typical example of how shills operate to manufacture anti-Korean sentiments, just like 1991justforfun. You just created bullshit argument like "you are talking as if you are better than everyone else" when there is no basis for it, out of thin air. Any normal person will be able to read my comment and say there is no such meaning.
BillboardTopMVlyrics you was being rude just because you've never seen it doesn't mean that HIS EXPERIENCE is untrue. Grow up
What about latinos?
Well that's not fair......everyone loves Latinos
GDLizzay haha :)
Yeah! :C They don't speak about latin american people.
Juan Carlos Torres thats what I wanna know
Mee too. I'm searching it; maybe I found something.
wait a minute.....waaaaait a minute!! WAIT A MINUTE!
...i wash every day though :( and use right guard.
Hahaha, this is so cute.
Oh Korea.....
Holy shit... If north koreans think north americans are loud, and north americans think brazilian people are loud, a north korean could have an earblow with a brazilian person 😂😂😂😂
Marcela Fonseca hahahahha you made me laugh. By the way, they are talking about South Koreans, not North Koreans ;)
Marcela Fonseca north koreans???? lol
Citrine Queens She just got confused :)
Marco Ronchetti think about us italians ahhahaahhahah what are we?
Ari Lylie Kings of super noisy people :P
@@brooke.nelson Korea is no better for sure. I think the best country to live in is Denmark.
le Van only thing about that is I don’t wanna live there.
Anyways I hope you find your way to your fav homeland soon.
le Van thank you 😊
soooo, since i'm black, i'll wait till korea is more....exposed and well rounded
idk how dey will treat a jamaican :/ ....sad tho
JAPAN & CHINA it is!
Jamaican's aren't racist to any race except maybe ourselves a bit
And jamaica is in good economic and financial standing with japan and china, we have a good amount of diaspora in both countries
This mother and daughter were commenting about me on the subway and saying really rude things but they didn't know I could understand them.
that's a bummer :(
That happened to me when someone was talking junk about my foreigner clothing: sweatpants and sweatshirt; and i was acting like i couldn't hear them and once they started talking more i got my phone, acted like i called my mom, and talked to her in fluent korean.
Chae Lee are you mix?
The reason Koreans and many Japanese don't have a body odor smell is due to the prevalence of a variant in The ABCC11 gene, which controls the number of apocrine sweat glands you have.
the gene variant korean and japanese have means they have fewer apocrine sweat glands compared to people of other descent, and the lack of these glands make East Asians less prone to body odor. it affects apocrine sweat glands by reducing secretion of odorous molecules and its precursors.
SCIENCE!
very interesting on the genetics!! love that!
Because, Philippines is very very cheap to learn english.
and most Koreans go to English school run by Koreans, not Filipino school.
Have you attended school in the Philippines? There are at least a couple Koreans in every class. I've had Korean classmates in my school back in the Phils, and everywhere you look in campus you will see Koreans. Even though they may attend schools run by Koreans, most tutors or teachers are still Filipinos.
And Dara (a member of 2NE1, a KPOP group) has also lived in the Philippines for a significant amount of time of her life.
Lol yep and it's quite funny because a lot of filipinos in my school are super smart
Monti Carlo You saw the video? Russians are treated like shit although they are light-skinned. I mean that prostitute stereotype.
Have you even met a serious korean friend? We don't judge like that. These days more and more people have open-minded
Haha, I'm from Buffalo. That's practically Canada. Counts for something, right?
...Riding the white horse means being on cocaine in the US.
Maybe before I go to Korea I should move to Canada and become a citizen so I don't have to say I'm American....
I'm from the Philippines and it's quite surprising that there are Koreans who think this way about Filipinos when in fact Koreans are everywhere and even go to schools/ universities, have businesses here and all.
I know i know it's kinda sad though but oh well we have stereotypes for other cultures too err but uneducated & prostitutes? hahahahahaha okay okay
+Iz C Cementing a negative stereotype of Korea based on Korean negative stereotypes is amusing ironic.
There's ignorance in every country. Chinese people have stereotypes about Koreans too. It's everywhere. But asking a person if they fit into the stereotype of their race in your country is rude and ignorant... Poor Fei.
LMAO "Riding the white horse"
Ohhh M'lady! Gazing into your eyes awakens deep and exciting emotions. The things I would love to share with you in our love motel, snuggling by the empty pizza box with cookie crumbs scattered on the bed covers.
.......
So I guess the gist of this for Americans is:
Tourists in Korea = Europeans in the US + Californians in the southern US
Asian foreigners in Korea = Mexicans in the US
Asian guy, white girl in Korea = white guy, black girl in the US
Asian girl, white guy in Korea = black guy, white girl in the US
black people in Korea = black people in the deep south
***** not if that white girl is in asia because she loves asian people or culture or kpop, because she's looking for an asian invasion in her pants lol.
how's it like with Europeans in the US? I'm European so I'm curious about that
***** yeah everyone likes the unknown or something exotic....
Donghyun if you're reading this, this white horse is available ;) Also for marriage...
About the BO situation... lol when I visited my male cousins in skorea, they had maaad BO. XD
Germans are as different as us Danes. ;)
It's the same with the typical 'Americans are stupid' thing.
No one minds, no one hates the Swedes, Danes are drunk in Copenhagen as well.. lol
Other than that I don't really know any stereotypes about other nationalities I think.
I don't know any for Koreans, Chinese, French, English, South African, Malaysian etc. etc. We have no real stereotypes for anyone I think.. Or maybe I'm just out of the racism-loop. Who knows. :p
DENMARK!!!!!!
Gnawer Shreth It's funny because prices in Norway are even higher, so we go to Sweden for "cheep" alcohol.
Swedish people lhahahaha
MissCaraMint Yes.... i moved to Sweden because we even got cheap house here and all the other students think im rich because i get 5000 NOK because i live alone studying in another country but my father earns 12000 NOK and mother 13000 NOK because she cant work and get money from the state..... norway got to expencive so my mom uses a house here in sweden as "summer" house (50% of the year). i wanna move to korea because its so much better and cheaper than even sweden :O
Well, I live in Quebec, and most English-Canadians visiting will often think we are snooty and Euro. But we aren't ;-;
It's just that, when you come into Quebec without knowing French, natives are bound to treat you a bit differently xD
i am filipino and this got me sad but its ok lol now i know to be careful when i go there o.o
Ouch for the Filipinos.. :(
This video is slightly misleading, because Koreans like America, although it depends on individuals political view, but America is always the most liked country in Korea.
Foreign guys can't date Korean girls? Aww, I can't marry CL then D:
One can always dream :P
***** I'm a really shy person but when people know me I am really nice but... kinda.. crazy xD I'm trying not to be vain or anything xD
Yes they can, if they have good height and looks. OR........ MONEY! You might get "instant" gratification. lol
I want to marry Kim Chungha of I.O.I!!!
But if someone asked me if my light brown skin color washed off in the pool, I wouldn't get mad, but I would begin treating them like they have a learning disability.
that is why i have always said all ppl are racists to some extent.western white ppl do not have the monopoly on racism
actually the asian countries are considered the most racist of world( i dont say this check on lineXD)
*****
i dont think any of us are saying that every individual is...just that every( race)and i hate that use of the word because their is only 1 race of ppls better to say every ethinc group is.
Thank you!
@@danieladifoggia9019 Asian and middle eastern countries would top the list on the most racist regions in the world.
i was drinking soda *out of a coffee mug because i can't find any good cups in my house* and when 4:51 came up the soda shot up into my nose and i just collapsed onto the floor
fun times
Great video. im an African American man living in Korea with a somewhat athletic build and i must say most Koreans have been extremely nice 2 me. For some reason little Korean boys love no, they see me and wave at me. (not in a weird way (
When I was in Korea an ajuma rubbed my arm to feel my skin (I'm black) it was weird but she was old & nice so I didn't say anything
A Korean-Canadian who honors Queen Elizabeth like me would offend the "republican" South Koreans.
Everyone, don't worry so much about it. South Korea is beginning to open up to the world, someday this kind of situation will no longer exist, it may take several years, probably you will be dead, BUT someday your grandchildren will be able to visit South Korea whatever their color, race or country.
And know our of 10 people in seoul 2 are forigner and I think it's good as long as no korean-chinses come
I'm Korean and that black skin thing is new to me. that was shocking... maybe just among little kids who haven't encountered black people in their lives or maybe one or two.
What do they think about Mexican American? Would they dislike that too since they're American
Haha thats funny but thanks I would've never know this at all. :)
:/ well I got happy when I saw them do an interview with Wonder Girls. They knew about Mexican food
First of all, the shit you wrote sounds fckn rude... the thing you wrote can be offending to some people.
I'm Malaysian Chinese.. so erm.. yea.
This was a barrel of laughs, i want to be an English teacher like u guys and im so looking forward to teasing people with my STDs LOL
anyways Australia has been labeled the most racist country in the world which is bs but i think thats because we have really two races in australia, the aboriginals and foreign descendant australians and there have been a lot of issues between the two and we're getting better, just a lot of misunderstanding etc we really are good light hearted people, having a sense of humor is a good attribute here in aus
I think most people are good at heart, but everyone's got a bad reputation with someone. I think we'd be hard pressed to find a country that didn't have at least some people who thought unflattering things about them.
Arrowdodger
oh so true
It's a lot better these days, but even just a few decades ago, Australia was hella racist.
In the RMIT cafeteria during the 90s recession, people were shouting at foreign students, "go home" and "stop stealing our jobs"
One day, I got sick of that shit, flipped a table, and started ranting.
Danceofmasks
damn that's crazy. #racismgottago
Aus- now that's a place where I'd like to go to live my life :)))
"riding the white horse" made me laugh so hard I fell off my bed. I think i'd more so just laugh at these statements if I heard them on the street more so than be offended.
So I am wondering if they only know "missionary" position. how boring would that be!! I ride horses !!?? loll
I'm Mexican so is there any stereotypes or anything about Mexicans? Very curious
"Will your skin color wash off in a pool" Hahahahah i just died
+Frank Rizzo where are you from that Liberals are racist? It's conservatives that are generally racist everywhere I've been.
Hey Kimchi guys, am a black guy from the UK and Norway, (ethnically african, obviously) anyway, just wan to know their take on blacks,...heading there soon..just to avoid any culture clashes
thanks... recent subscriber
i asked before watching, my apologies, and thanks for answering
Woah I was wearing headphones for this video... That was crazy I had Simon in my left ear and Martina in my right ear.
Got a question! What do Korean people think of latinos???
OMG THE WHITE HORSE THING, I flipped out that is so... Hilariously offensive, because I'm a white girl and I find Korean guys attractive and also that explained the age long question I've had about why GD and TOP thought it was so funny when Seungri said he wanted to be a white horse...
Woah there. He said he wanted to be a white horse, not to ride one.
I don't know the context, but dating a whitegirl is probably not what sengri meant
I WAS LAUGHING SOOO HARD "riding the white horse"
I just have a question:
what if you're half american and half southeast asian?
ABeardedSage
well then
+kit katty If you meant White when you said American (because American isn't a race) Koreans would have no idea what race you are. They'd just think you're a foreigner. They might think you're White? Maybe?
123 d
wll i mean, i was born in america, and my parents and most family members are from southeast asia so
yea sorry about that, sometimes, I can make stuff very confusing
+Xiumin Kicks I'm a very hygienic Filipina virgo, now what does that make me? xD (btw half british/Spanish)
You are really going to be welcomed in Thailand because they want to kill you?
realy ?? are you sure ? that's makes me scary then, but thailand have a nice island for foreigners, even Indonesia have much better I guess
What would they think of Hispanic people??
depends on your out looks.
if you look more like european then they ll consider you as a white
Or, southeast asian
This video has been hilarious...yet I feel so defensive for my people! Korea is still traditional so I can see where all of this is coming from!
love the couples aubience and input its variety of the answers qued together that really puts the video into one . love it !
+emily love Thank you!
