Absolutely stunning, the ebony is so beautiful and the finial you turned is spot on.love the contrast of colours in the wood. Arigatou gozimasu for sharing with us.😘😘
Beautiful work. Definitely not an easy piece of wood to work with. I think my father worked with it long ago and recall it being quite difficult to turn, but he was able to manage it.
Thank you for your comment 🙇 Ebony is very hard wood🪵 I found it easier to cut with a carbide tip than with a gouge. It's still hard, so I don't want to use ebony for a while. lol Getting from Japan 🇯🇵
Beautiful! I can see from your video that I would be hard pressed to ever turn a significant piece of ebony on my little harbor freight lathe. lol. Well done, Sir! 🫡
Thank you for your comment 🙇 I'm happy to hear that! This lathe is compatible with works up to a maximum diameter of 30cm, but the VL300, which has a maximum turning diameter of 60cm, is rarely available. lol Getting from Japan 🇯🇵

Nice video. The can/vase looks great! 👍 I once turned a box, also with a lid and a similar tip. Only I turned a loose ring into this tip, which can be moved but not removed.

I have a JET 1221 - similar in size to yours. I think it's great fun to turn larger pieces. It just takes a little more finesse with the smaller lathe. Super nice piece! Cheers!
Thank you for your comment 🙇 I'm happy to hear that! This lathe is compatible with works up to a maximum diameter of 30cm, but the VICMARC VL300, which has a maximum turning diameter of 60cm, is rarely available. lol Getting from Japan 🇯🇵
Try using a carbide hole saw, instead of the forstner bit. If you can find the correct size. Plumber of 41 years and I’ve been using hole saws for running PVC drainage pipe, my hands and wrists love me now
I noticed right away that this size of a block might be new to you. Stuff like not automatically cutting the corners down, how you tried to drill it out, etc. No worries, we all gotta learn, but the glove on your front hand freaked me out a little bit. Especially at 2:14 where your tool rest is way too far away from the piece & you wiped the chips off with that gloved hand. I think you were a lot closer to a pretty severe injury than you realized. I've been turning about 13ish years, so I'm speaking from a bit of a background. Gloves are super dangerous, even moreso the type you were wearing & that gap could do some gnarly things to a finger if it got sucked in by, say, a glove. Be safe & keep making awesome stuff!
Unobtainium, that blank would cost $$$$$ in the USA. The final piece might sell for what you have into it. the cracks would discourage me on such a high end piece.
Thank you for your comment 🙇 Because of the cracks, this ebony block could be purchased cheaply. And this work will also be sold cheaply lol Getting from Japan 🇯🇵
