    One of my all time favorite under rated films...I LOVE the tone, the direction, the creativity, the characters...I consider it a home run that most people never, sadly, bothered to give a chance. Right up there with 'Ghostbusters', the mixture of scares and comedy is pitch perfect...and the ending ways spot on, IMHO...'Don't Fear The Reaper' over the end credits, too? LOVE it.

      Why so many negative comments? Screw the CGI,its a classic ,the ACTING performances and storyline, are excellent ,and Michael .J Foxes last performance ,before his diagnosis, was a great testament ,to his versatility, along with Jeffrey Coombs, masochistic ,over the top investigator, mae it an even better film, petty comments about CGI ,just show ,how much folk look for shallow effects ,rather than acting excellence, and inventive storylines, over critical, review ,of a much underrated film.

    The Frighteners failed at the box office because it came out up against Independence Day. A movie, what ever you think of it now, was a HUGE success for that summer. I can even remember Fox on late night talk show talking about how it was never going to get seen after how well ID was playing, something along the lines of, "In the movie I jump up and punch an alien and say welcome to earth, nah im in another movie that no one is going to see now." something like that, even though I used quotes. That being said in my opinion Frighteners holds up better over the years compared to ID.

    • @nolaanderson8770
      @nolaanderson8770 3 года назад +6

      I remember going to the movies multiple times during summer '96 and seeing the poster for The Frighteners - and never having a clue what it was about. The competition that summer was fierce - not just Independence Day, but Twister, the first Mission Impossible, Dragonheart, The Nutty Professor, The Rock. ID4 was interesting and The Rock was fun, but The Frighteners was significantly better than those other films. When I saw The Frighteners on cable I was PISSED that I wasted time going to see so many "meh" movies and never thought about seeing The Frighteners on the big screen.

      @@nolaanderson8770 especially since Will Smith was on a summer movie blockbuster back to back years in the mid-late 90s. IMO , The Rock was a classic 90s action movie as well and I watched that movie so many times back then.

    Jackson was right that the marketing was sub par. I remember seeing the cover at the video store and thinking 'meh, another horror story. Haven't seen a good one of those since the 80s. I'll pass.' I never knew it had great effects, was a dark comedy or that it starred Michael J. Fucking Fox! All of the things I loved about movies at the time. Until seeing this review, that is. Now I've gotta check it out.

    The Frighteners is a delightfully fun and smartly made film. I originally owned the widescreen VHS, and I have the director's cut DVD. Been a long time since I've watched it. Seems like a good time to do that now. Superb retrospective, Ollie! I really take The Frighteners as a 90s successor to Ghostbusters. Really, if Peter Jackson did a Ghostbusters movie, it'd be just like this.

    I think they gave plenty of groundwork for the idea that Frank could pull Patricia's spirit out of her body since that was pretty much what the Reaper was doing through the whole film when he killed the living by reaching inside them.

      Yes they made it work. But its still to un explained. Why do some ghosts have this ability when others dont. Why dose the villain have a reaper weapon that kills ghosts. It leaves some things un answered. An thats one of the weak points.Still a pretty good film though I enjoy it

    • @tdugong

      @@boomstickcritique902 it depends on the ghost. The judge and Ermey were soldiers/lawmen in life and thus familiar with weapons and thus, able to conjure weapons.
      Busey's character escaped from hell and stole a reaper's scythe and cloak and learned to manipulate objects via play/messing with Patricia's mom.

    The best part: next day at breakfast I told my Dad what a weird movie I watched the other night (I was pretty sure he wouldn't know this movie) and he was all like: "OH! You watched The Frighteners, right? I remember that movie, I liked it." I was actually shocked that he knew that movie. xD

    Great review and retrospective. I really enjoy this movie still today. Yes alot of the cgi hasnt aged well, but peter jackson does say in the interview before the directors cut how new the technology was at the time so it still gets alot of credit for being among the first at the time to use such effects and shows how far some effects have come. I do need to ask though, does rthe film critic Robert Egbert ever praise or give any films credit because everytime i watch one of your videos when you talk about how the critics recieved a certain movie, its always said he gave it thumbs down or a bashing lol..does he actually like any films?? lol

    Such an under-appreciated film, what a shame... As far as the supposed gated effects go, yes they do look a little unreal in spots, but that just adds to the otherworldly effect... things from other dimensions and Death itself should not necessarily look real, they should look bizarre and strange so I think it suits the film nicely...
    The performances are outstanding, the direction is top-notch, and the visuals work splendidly along with a wonderfully goofy and creepy Danny Elfman scoreand a perfect final scene with the perfect song, this is an unappreciated gem that deserves more attention...
    And Oliver, I think your problems, the feud that you apparently had with this flick, stem from the fact that you approached it as a horror movie first and a dark comedy second when it really is the other way around... as a dark comedy, it's simply wonderful...😊

I think Bad Taste would be interesting to do a retrospective on as it was his first film, took five years to make because he shot it all on weekends and starred all his mates from work. Jackson himself plays two roles.
