    Realizing Maverick never sailed, I like her comment in the end of the sailing scene "Now you're in the Navy" A few of us Flying Scot sailors took 12 Naval ROTC students out sailing. They had a great time, but we were surprised to learn that none of them had ever sailed! These are future naval officers! We baptized them well in heavy breezes!

    SF Bay... you can see Alcatraz Island off to starboard at 0:55. Not enough breeze to film this scene in San Diego. They sailed upwind into the central bay from behind Angel Island and then headed downwind back toward Point Richmond after hoisting the spinnaker. Great stuff!

    Even though i had seen the film "Top Gun" at my local cinema and enjoyed it, for some reason i didn't want to see "Top Gun Maverick" but after reading the reviews i decided to go and see it. After watching this film i was so blown away by it that it took me a few minutes to gather my thoughts when i left the cinema.

    Raising the Spi in the wind condition at.the beginning? It will capsize you or break your mast. How convenient of the wind to drop to employ the afterburner in calm conditions.

    • @ggggg4030
      @ggggg4030 Год назад +3

      It’s spot on and no it won’t snap the mast. On the first leg they were sailing to windward and the perceived wind will be boat speed plus wind speed in your face. You can see they were maxed out with the traveler fully to windward. Then they fell off and began to run with the wind and the perceived wind was wind speed minus boat speed, much calmer. Then they jibed to a port tack and hoisted. It’s a keel boat and 40 feet, it would take a 20’ breaking wave hitting the boat abeam to possibly capsize it. It could broach on the hoist, but only if the spin sheet is too tight and not momentarily eased at the right moment. I’ve done this racing a J/105 (6’ shorter than this J/125 but, same sail plan) a hundred times, never caused a wipe out. But I was on board once when someone else failed to east the sheet, I think our spreader touched the water, a lot of beer was spilled 🤣. We were pinned over by the wind for a couple seconds until the trimmer blew the sheet-mistakes are rampant in the sport and nobody on board gave it a second thought. Great teamwork, Great times.

      Its not a Dehler and definitely not a 30 footer. Looks like a J/120 or J/125-40 footer. J/Boats have the the running rigging layout and the distinctive retractable bow sprit are dead giveaways. I raced on J Boats for years. That’s exactly the way I hoisted the asym. And yes, that massive sail is an afterburner. As for the reef, while the wind was strong, the seas were flat and the boat was hardly heeled. J boats are heavy, safe, stable boat in those conditions. I raced routinely in heavy Great Lakes winds on a J/105 (34 footer). never reefed the main once.

    Right, 13 plus knots, not even if is going downwind surging off wave in a gale. Unless the hull of the J-125 breaks the rules of physics for a displacement sailboat of having an efficiently of over two times the square root of the length of her waterline it not possible. The boats in the pic are 40 ft long, the fastest I helmed, going up wind and footing is a little over 8 knots on calm water in a strong offshore wind, but the J is a lighter boat so it should do 8.5 to 9 knots. Never 13 knots on the wind, and doubtful off the wind, unless briefly with a large sea are running behind her, surging her along.

    • @ggggg4030
      @ggggg4030 Год назад +1

      I would agree with you, except, I raced a J/105 (34’) on a 25 mile regatta feeder race, asym the whole way. Strong wind and similar seas to this clip. We doused near the finish-needed one tack to cross the line. We clocked 12+ knots most of the way. It absolutely defied the physics, and we were all in amazement. I was the grinder on that asym, i got relief at times but i ached for about 3 days. 🤣. On the upwind leg, the traveller is all the way to windward, so they are not spilling any air, but I agree 9 knots is about the limit.
