The creature is Ruaūmoko, god of tectonic activity - he was the unborn brother in the Māori pantheon, and I think I've figured out what's happening.
Papa, Ruaū's mother (the earth) faces down in the creation myth and so perhaps she cannot see the world as it is now. She tells Ruaū of what she saw of the world before her other sons turned her over. Now that Ruaū has finally surfaced, he finds his brothers all deceased, and the country damaged by Pākehā encroachment on Papa's land. I could go on!

I lost my brother to cancer when I was 25, I'd been listening to this song a lot around that time and it always reminded me of those times, now sooo many years later P's words bring tears to my eyes with sadness and joy that I even got to have him as a brother, AROHANUI.
Ironic that this would come out months before the Christchurch Earthquakes, great analysis!
I cannot stop watching this video! It touches me so deep! I recommend that every kiwi spend a few years away from NZ to realize just how wonderful our beautiful country is, and how much seeing something as simple as a Department of Conservation sign can pull at your heartstrings!

How can you not see what the video means? you have to listen to the lyrics. The video is a visual metaphor. It represents the idea of someone (the main character) that has lost someone or something (the statues etc) He feeds and grows from the pain and uses it to battle his way through the bullshit of everyday life to finally rest in a place or headspace that he wants to be in. Thats how I interpret it anyway. Very powerful stuff.
As someone who spent many years getting my degree at Vic uni there were definitely alot of scenes i recognized immediately featuring alot of hot spots in Wellington city.

I'm a Canadian Student in Ontario and I had a New Zealand student come to my school for a year. I ended up getting closer to her than I have with anyone in my nation. We were so alike on so many levels. Our thought process, how we were raised, beliefs, etc. We spent the entire time smoking weed, listening to kickback NZ music such as katchafire, fat freddies, and shapeshifter, and more or less discussing and trying to figure out the lives we live, hehe. She taught me a lot about myself+viseversa

Reminds me of my old boss. Ended himself the same day i first heard this. Still remember the day and the weather. High street auckland, a particularly dreary misty day... the phone rang. His mrs had left him, took the two kids and denied any access, then tried to take his 2 mill property off him. Barely worked a day in her life yet he had worked as a farmer for 25 years. Still sits with me to this day.
Sad to hear bro..same thing happen to me 20 yrs ago. Had the same thoughts but i wasnt ending my life over a wife. Now my kids are grown up and live with me..its a pity he didnt think about things..we only live for 80 yrs if we lucky and we dead forever so fuk death make it wait for as long as u can

I was so stoked when I heard Shapeshifter were coming to play where I live. But then I found out it was Shapeshifters from the UK... and I suddenly became less stoked. but still quite stoked about that.
