    So far I’ve had reasonably good destination charging experiences on my three big distance trips to Lincoln, Blackpool, and Cardiff. Each time I was able to whip out my slow Type 2 charge cable and happily walk away, go about my business and was welcomed to a full battery on my return.
    That said, as someone who cannot home charge, I rely on the cheapest local fast charge once per week, the more I think of the problem the more I see supermarkets as the ultimate winners.
    If a local supermarket put in a bank of 22-50KW chargers at a fair price they’d instantly get my custom.
    A 20-30min weekly shop would ordinarily give we plenty of charge for my day to day needs.

    I recently had 4 days in the Lake District. The air b&b I booked had a 7 KW charger I could use as long as I have them something towards usage. I used £18 worth, at there daily rate of 23p. Bargain for convenience of not charging while we were out!

    Just to add - LFP it is a good idea to bring it to 100% everynow and again for the BMS to 'learn' upper and 'lower' levels as the voltage range between full and 0% is smaller than a NMC battery and LFP are designed, due to their chemistry, to go up to 100%. But yes if you go between say 50% and say 80% everytime you charge an NMC battery will have less degradation and get many more 'cycles' available to it. I would say every now and again there is no harm to take an NMC battery to 100% from your home charger just to help the BMC rebalance itslef so to speak. :) Great video by the way :)

    A word of caution.
    I was using a 7KW charger at a campsite in North Wales when it went BANG, taking my cars OBC with it, a £3500 repair.
    That was a year ago, and I still dont know who I was supposed to do about the damage, the camp site claims they dont own or run the charger, but there was no information ON the charger, other than the manufacturer's name.
    And how do I PROVE the charger damaged my car? Even if I could identify the operators, it would be my word against theirs.
    I was lucky, I had 10 WEEKS left on my 7 year warranty, so after a lot of haggling, the repair was finally authorised - but took nearly 5 months.
    If you cannot identify who is operating the charger, dont stick a charging cable into it.

    Destination charging addresses some of the problems that are often presented as barriers to EV adoption.
    Destination charging is widely available in most communities, its inexpensive, and often free.
    It is a convenient way of topping up while out and about, or can fill in as the primary charging source for people who cannot charge at home.
    I have access to free destination charging near the trails where I walk my dog and in the parking lot where I buy groceries, and I have very inexpensive charging available throughout my city in public parking lots, parks and at the side of the street downtown.

    In this country everything is seen as an opportunity to make money ! Local councils have had their budgets cut to the absolute bone and that has led to them having no option but to look for other revenue sources including car parks. If we really wanted to make a difference to Net Zero the government would make all public transport FREE and provide a network of FREE public charging points for EV drivers

    I'm happy to pay the 'going rate' for any electricity I use to charge my car off the wall - including friends and family (yours may be astonished to hear that their electricity is 'free' as you suggested at the beginning of the vid!) Destination charging is too important an issue to immediately rile people up by 'demanding' 13amp charging for free. Lets imagine an ICE car could be rigged up to accept quarter of a litre of petrol an hour. Would we expect shop keepers and other organisations to install facilities and provide the petrol to trickle fuel our ICE cars? I suspect not. Points need wiring in, and maintaining, it's not just the kW. The trouble is it would actually cost quite a lot to process the payments too. What is needed is to start making the argument for destination slow charging, get funding/grants to install the wiring starting with workplace car-parks, hotels, shopping centres and town-centre car parks, and a national system of payment, which could actually be done by 'time spent parked' rather than having to measure the kWh.

    • @davetakesiton
      @davetakesiton  Месяц назад +1

      Free to me, obviously, not to the provider of electricity. Regarding costs, a simple waterproof 13amp socket is enough, if it’s free to use. If someone wants to pay £1000 for Fast chargers they would deserve compensation but they would also be in competition with a hundred thousand others. 13 amp free please. It might cost £100, requires no special supply and would cost no more than £6 per day. I bet the shop air conditioning costs a lot more than that and they don’t charge for its use. Imagine here’s your bill and a10% charge for the air conditioning that was running while you were in the shop. Free really slow chargers but millions of them please

      You need to get this "I can make a profit" concept out of your thinking. Do shops charge more for their products or services if they run the A/C while you are there? Is there an extra charge if the lights are on? Or an extra tax if you go there in the winter and the heating is on? Some might choose to offer free charging to their customers as part of the service to attract customers, others might make you pay, in which case they will be in competition with hundreds of thousands of other public fast chargers. If I park, I will always choose a free car park rather than one you have to pay if all else is equal.

There used to be loads of free charging, as recenty as 2020, nearly all gone now, there's only one I can think of that remains and that is made up for by the parking charge being extortionate. So free charging is off the table. Its a great idea but etiquette goes out the window as depand increases - look at Disabled or "child parking" spaces in your local supermarket on a saturday morning - The CPOs have zero insentive to penalise someone who is spending money in the retail park. The loure of free parking is too sucessful so thats why there are typically a 2 or 3 hour parking limit on retail park sites due to parking demand outstripping supply. Also retail parks (including the car park) is owned by a 3rd party and the shops rent the retail unit - therefore have no influrance on facilities provided by the CPO.

    • @davetakesiton
      @davetakesiton  Месяц назад

      The time limit is something I totally agree with. Why would a supermarket pay to charge your EV if you wander off to a nearby relative or attraction? No! they could provide shoppers with free parking and charging while they are shopping. In Bristol I found they have syndicates. Four cars meet up at a McDonald’s and three park up and pile into the other car. That is organised abuse. BTW what would happen if the supermarket put a dozen waterproof sockets on the outside wall in front of bays marked EV only free charging? What could a CPO or landowner actually do? I suspect it is not written into their lease.

    We should bear in mind a “normal” 13A socket even an outdoor rated one shouldn’t routinely be used for charging a car. They don’t have PEN fault protect not DC leak protection - these thing can be put on a 13A socket but then with the specialist equipment and professional installation you are looking at almost the cost of a proper EVSE.
    Indeed on
    older properties where the property wiring might not be to the recent standards a sustained 10A pull through this old wiring can additionally cause a fire risk.
    Next time you have your kettle on feel the temperature of the flex near the plug and that’s after just 1 minute. Imagine the potential issue of sub standard wall recessed cabling heating for hours on end while an EV is being charged.
    At a recent EV show an electical professional said the potential danger of EV charging on a normal 13A socket shouldn’t be underplayed even in newer properties because of the lack of DC leak protection and PEN fault protection.
    I’m not an electrician and welcome a professionals comment/correction or additional information.

    • @davetakesiton
      @davetakesiton  23 дня назад

      If your kettle cable ever gets warm, you need an electrician. If your wiring is really old, you need an electrician. If you have an old fuse box with actual fuses, you need an electrician. If you do plug your EV in, you need an electrician. Please all you non electricians, me included, don't offer any advice to anyone, ever, other than to get an electrician. I get an electrician regularly to check that what I am doing is safe and also to bring everything up to the very latest standards. My last visit did need alterations to the Trip or fuse or RCD or whatever it is that protects my charger. It was correct when installed four years ago, but the latest standards require even more safety. Get an electrician.

      3 pin plugs aren't a good solution to destination charging, at least outside of residental properties. All the above safety concerns as well as the max being around 2kW not 3kW plus while most people carry a Type 2 cable, I would imagine most wouldn't carry a granny charger cable too.

    And then you get to the restaurant and find someone else had the same idea, wandered off for 3 hours leaving a car charging. Then getting to a beach car park and finding that the charger is out of order. Now you have to drive round in some unknown city desperately trying to find a free charger, then walk 5 miles back while the car sits for 6 hours
    You go to the Lake district and spend £100 a night for a hotel. You fill up your Ev from nil to 100% overnight, and they get £60 of electric free?! Really?

  • @patrickjr11
    @patrickjr11 Месяц назад +3

    Big bugbear of mine since I started driving EVs 3 years ago. The charger should be in line with the destination. Not some penis competition that it is today. If I am going to the cinema, then a 25kwh CCS unit is more then enough. Even at a motorway service area any 100kwh unit is fine as most cars don't go beyond that anyway and you should spend some dwell time at the facilities. Immediate clock watching and rushing to the toilet/coffee shop is not what they want you to do there. Put your feet up, take a break, look around the shops is better.
    The 350/360 units are trying to do something for which there no absolutely no need.
    The unit, no matter what the location, should allow you to plug in, go about your business, calmly, and not worry about causing a queue. That's the whole point of a car that is parked up so much and it's an EV.
    A train station charger does not need to be more then 5kwh for instance.
    The charger needs to be appropriate for both the location and the expected use case. Not the bragging rights of the subcontracted brands.
    The cost of installing the wrong kind of units at the wrong locations must be huge

      Never use destination charging. Don't see the point. Do 95% of charging at home at 7p er KwH. For long journeys use a fast charger en route. Why faff about with chargers at supermarkets or cinemas to save a few pennies
