5:02 Couldn't agree more - it's amazing how the Frankfurt Radio Symphony orchestra consistently manages to upload such fantastic concerts with the best sound quality I've heard on RUclips. It's really a gift. For many of my favorite pieces, they have recorded the (imo) best performances with Estrada. Hope to go there live someday! Another conductor definitely worth mentioning is Kirill Petrenko. During his time at the Bavarian State Opera, I had the luck to see him conduct many times and wow, his technique and tempi are always on point. I remember one concert in particular with Tchaikowsky's Manfred Symphony that really left me thrilled. His new position at the BPO is a very deserved one ^^
Andres is really best, especially with Frankfurt Symphony Orch. His gestures are light, he projects things with the simplest gestures, right in the spot, never too much
The only Abbado Mahler that really stands out for me is his interpretations of the 7th. But there is Bernstein Chailly Klemperer Barbirolli etc who are more convincing Mahler interpreters in my opinion. Even Solti, Karajan made very great recordings of Mahler that Abbado seem to lack that character. I like his 4th and 7th tho tbh. You could check these guy out if you like lol

But I agree that Abbado also made a very good one with the Vienna Phil...not to keen on the Lucerne performances (the fifth is pretty good!). For my favorite conductor that would be between Munch, Szell, Bernstein...but Chailly is great I agree
Klaus Mäkelä is really impressive imo. I don't know much about what makes a conductor a good conductor but he looks damn intense in the recordings I watched

Unfortunately, most of us can only rate conductors based on recordings, and that can be a very iffy method. What makes a conductor "great" depends on what the criteria is: audiences, orchestra players, record producers, critics, other conductors all have their own, and different, ideas. Your list is of five currently active (except Abbado) conductors, but in my experience they all pale in comparison to the giants of the past.
I can't say I agree with your list, but hey, that's part of the fun! First of all, by biggest problem with Abbado is the fact that he recorded way too much. Most of the good stuff he did was with the LSO, it's already a great recording legacy. But his recordings with the BPO and the VPO are extremely inconsistent. And for my money, his Mahler ranges from good to average, it doesn't compare with Bernstein's. Rattle has to be one of the most overrated conductors ever. He's made some really fine recordings, but most of his work is pretty mediocre, especially while he was in Birmingham (with the exception of his Szymanowski disc). The stuff he did in Berlin isn't necessarily bad, I just find it boring. His interpretation of Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances is terrific though. Thielemann is one conductor I just can't listen to. He's recorded the most horrible Schumann Symphony Cycle ever, and his recent Bruckner cycle is plain bad. However, I 100% agree about Chailly. Too bad the only thing you mentioned from him is his Brahms Symphony cycle, which is far from being is best work. His Beethoven cycle was much better and his Mahler is stunning. My personal favorite conductor of all time is probably Charles Mackerras. He's the only conductor I know who hasn't made a single bad recording. His innate musicality and his mastery of an incredibly vast repertoire was simply exceptional. He was a genius. Also, the one who is currently the best living conductor in my opinion, Manfred Honeck. His series of recordings with the Pittsburgh Symphony is absolutely mind-blowing. Everything in Honeck's hands sound incredibly fresh, and some of his interpretations (of Tchaikovsky's 6th, Beethoven's 3rd, Brahms' 4th, Bruckner's 9th and others) are simply modern references. Herbert Blomstedt, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Ivan Fischer and Andrew Litton are also some of my favorites.
There are always those conductors that non-classical musicians know about, like Leonard Bernstein. But the world of conductors is absolutely huge, and in my opinion there's always one conductor who interprets composers better than any other. This is my list: Bach - Karl Munchinger Beethoven - Herbert von Karajan Mozart - Sir Neville Marriner Tchaikovsky - Bernard Haitink Berlioz - Sir Colin Davis Brahms - Wolfgang Sawallisch Wagner - Karl Bohm Haydn - Antal Dorati Handel - Iona Brown Schubert - Between Sawallisch and Marriner Vivaldi - Although not a conductor, the obvious choice is I Musici Stravinsky - Sir Colin Davis (again) Verdi - Sir Colin Davis (again)

His Wagner never got me which includes his rings Tristan, his Lohengrin is pretty good tho, I could agree he handles the orchestra well sometimes but he can’t guide them through long lines at all and it just becomes dull and even weird, weird intonations and accents that even the Bayreuth Festspielhaus can’t save it. While his Bruckner is simply crap most of the time, not sure about his Dresden performances but the Vienna ones are just crap. Interesting thing is these are the only 2 composers he does
I mean Rattle ok, i can get it. But Thielemann? Just listen to one of his latest recordings - Bruckner 4 with wiener phil from sagrada familia. Absolute rubbish. And dont let me start about his Beethoven. Just another glorified Furtwangler from Wish. Also Honeck should definitely be on that list imho. Its one banger after another from him last few years.

Because they are the gods. They’re so godly that it is unheard of that anyone else is better than them.
