    Wow. I wish employers thought more about work-flow and space as much as Goulet obviously did. Everyone's gone to "open floor" but haven't thought about how open floor has to be designed so that each role in the organization has an optimum set up for what their work requires. Also, good job Brian! Doing a walk-through, while talking without a script, mostly walking background is HARD. Way to go Goulet Pens!

      I didn't want to ASSUME it was one continuous shot, but clearly you decided to go big for your 200 youtube video. Again, great job. Nice touch touch having Tyler come back to shoot it! Kudos to doing a complete move and rebuild without debt. Very inspirational and positive part of my day. Thanks!

      uqox haha thanks! Yeah, we wanted to be open but not for everything. It was super intentional. The walkthrough was surprisingly natural. I did 1 run through with Andi when planning it out, a quick one with Tyler day of, then shot it in one take. Boom. Tyler’s a pro, that helped a lot -Brian

    Rachel and Brian: Spent 27 years in uniform (Army) - once was in the Richmond area. Retired 10 years ago. Since then I have become pretty depressed about that service. The organization I work for now causes me to say "knowing what I know now I ould have thrown down my weapon - looked at you and say you do it - I'm not going to sacrifice for this." This video should make you proud as it clearly does- but strangely it made me proud. These are the people, this is the reason I spent all that time in uniform - so that they can build this. Thanks for being that vision that got me in uniform in the first place.

    The pen cleaning station really proves that you guys are what you say you are, an extra treat beyond the Tootsie Pop to know for sure my money goes to good people. I went on Amazon the other day looking for Tomoe River paper and then I stopped and I was like no because my luck the paper will show up with messed up corners or something let me check goulet pens. Once I figure out what else I need that'll be my next order to you guys. Thanks for being awesome. You even got me the color notebook I wanted for those little Apica notebooks that are supposed to be randomly selected because of how they come packaged. Oh and also those goulet tomoe notebooks are great wish they came as a thick a5 same cover type so I could use them as a refill for my leather cover. Anyway I'm rambling now, thanks again! Lol

    Fantastic space Brian. You are right about what the right space, respectfully designed for the team means to a Company. Having moved a team to a fabulous HQ, I believe it took my whole Company to a much higher level. The staff felt respected and “thought about” and they brought an intensified level of professionalism as a result. Our customers and visitors loved it. This video allows us, who buy a slightly ridiculous number of Goulet products, to come in and know that yours is a quality environment we can be proud to buy from.
    The nib in the front entry is fab, and the ink-in-water art on the glass around the building is fun, and attractive.
    Well done Goulets! You deserve this success.

  • @chads1676
    @chads1676 6 лет назад +15

    First off, thank you Tyler for coming back to shoot an amazing video leaving Brian's employees free to be introduced!!
    Second, congratulations Brian on surviving the growth into a medium sized company while maintaining a small company feel! Really not just surviving, but nailing it in the head like a good game of whack-a-mole. All your reading clearly pays massive dividends.
    Thank you for encouraging your team to give us excellent care by providing them with a superb example by taking excellent care of them. I think too many owners/managers completely ignore that by spending a little extra at the outset to take care of their employees they actually greatly increase their bottom line down the road and then everyone wins.
    I do have one question coming away from this tour. On a popular product launch, such as this week's Lamy Vibrant Pink, where a good portion of your stock leaves in the first couple of days, do you have a temporary space such as a workbench until you know what's left to put on the shelf, or do they all get slotted right away causing a lot of shuffling?
    Thank you again for being an amazing company, which always starts with it being led by an amazing person.

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  6 лет назад +2

      There's a 'hot spot' table right next to the pulling station that houses popular product launches. For things like the VibrantPink, the orders tend to be just be the pen & ink, so they just grab it right there. - Colin

As as professional that’s worked for years both in corporate America & in the start-up space, it’s great to see the care & thoughtfulness you’ve put into making sure that your team is well taken care of in terms of their environmental & cultural needs. Those are the “small” touches that are invaluable, as people are a company’s biggest asset.

I'm from Denver, but would have gone out of my way to visit next time I'm in Virginia. (And it was nice to see Jessica [whom I have worked with] and where she works in the office.) Seeing the path you have taken (growing a passion) and the care about various ways to allow people to shop, and make it AS MUCH like an in-store experience as possible, again is both a delight and a brilliant example of business growth in a niche market. It looks like me like you're building a work environment that is the pride of those famous companies that people want to work there their whole lives (like at LAMY). Being familiar with your operation makes me that much more a loyal customer. Thank you again for all you do.

    Look what you've done! Fantastic! Just fantastic! Seeing this video has made me realize there's very few people I respect more than the Goulets. I can't think of anyone today more qualified to be an outside role model for my own children. Love, humility, hard work--look. There it is.

    Beautiful space you have and you did it debt free... so awesome! I love the big steel nib, all the natural light, and other intentional benefits you all added to make the workplace and culture pleasant & enjoyable for everyone that works there. God bless you guys! Your pen collection rocks! How many do you have?

      Raye Cage thank you!! The debt free aspect is actually something we’re pretty proud of. It for sure added to our intentionality, because every dollar we spent was “felt”, so we made sure it served a purpose! -Brian

    You have succeeded in showing that your employees are assets, not overheads. Most companies get that wrong, and ultimately pay the price. Your building, and the thought that has gone into each area is a sign of your loyalty to your staff, and your great team obviously responds well to that. It's also staggering that you developed that without debt! Well done, and continued success!

    This is seriously awesome to see. I think your focussing on people and making an environment that makes work time easier and simpler to do, is such an important thing. Also, to be able to do a complete build and fitout for a business that size while still operating elsewhere and without incurring business debt, is quite extraordinary in itself. Serious congratulations to you all and the whole team.

    I don't know how often anyone comments on this, but I can't tell you how much I admire you and Rachel for having a "no debt" company! As I write this in 2020, the "no debt" movement has been bolstered (sort of) by Kickstarter and other capital-raising-type ways of raising money to start a business providing a product without debt, whereas in the past, these people would have sought out a business loan and gone into debt to begin their companies. But you were definitely a leader in this arena ten years ago, and it is a philosophy I greatly admire.

    I am stunned at the progress over the years and the new facility is amazing. It is a testament to true leadership. I know you read and study leaders and it clearly has imprinted on you. When I was working I use to tell my leadership team that no organization can ever rise above the quality of it's leaders. That was our credo to hire the best, promote the best, and never stop learning. I think you have an awesome story to tell and can only imagine what the future holds.

    Kudos on building that space without debt, that is impressive. Will you speak to why your company uses apple computers? I use a Mac at home, but have never experienced them in an office. Not only am I a pen freak Im a keyboard freak too, which I expect it true for most people who like pens.

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  6 лет назад +15

      B Dog our first comp in 2009 was a Pc, and it was killed by a virus. We switched to Mac for less virus hassle, and more creative work (shooting pics and videos). We’ve found benefit by standardizing on them, having all similar hardware. We don’t even have a full time IT person, partly because we don’t need all that much support. Our printers and file server cause more issues than all our computers! -Brian

    Brian and Rachel -- thanks for sharing! That's a beautiful and amazing work space and I love how you've built it around your team with the quiet room, conference areas and, well, massive kudos for bringing in outside sunlight! It's a place I'd enjoy working ... and I'm talking about the people here, in addition to the space. So many of their names are already familiar partly because of your videos, and Monday/Thursday Things, but also because of the cards and packaging notes. It is also nice to know that you sometimes stop and appreciate how far you guys have come -- and yet further to go. May you be blessed with many more successful years!
