  • Today we will rebuild the brake calipers on my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee, but this video will be the same for almost every vehicle with disc brakes.
    I am using the FrenKit brake caliper rebuild kit and would recommend the same to anyone tackling this job.
    Here is a video on PAINTING BRAKE CALIPERS:

    I save broken drill bits and like to find one that fits tightly into the bleeder hole. that gives the bleeder a little more structure when you try to wrench it out.

      Whoa.... your brain is already in 2025! I cannot wait to try that one. Thanks bud!

      I don't know how I ever got along without an oxy acetylene torch. Propane plumber torch is better than nothing, but oxy fuel is a laser beam of heat.
      Heat 'em up cherry red, shove a drill bit in the hole, and vise grips will pull 'em right out without complaints or complications.
      Doesn't even need to be used broken drill bits, as long as you cool the bleeder off you won't ruin the drill bit. Not that 1/8 drill bits are expensive, but you know we're all miserly, otherwise we wouldn't be driving old rusted out shitboxes.

    Watch Wes Work is a mechanical genius with great sense of humor. Rebuilding calipers is an indispensable skill to have. I own three SAAB cars and they all have their original brake hydraulic bodies. The hydraulic bodies are in great shape for being 22 years old. Over the years I've rebuilt several of the calipers due to torn rubber dust boots and/or heavily pitted pistons and it has kept the cost of brake maintenance to an absolute minimum. Great video. Subscribed. Cheers.

    And if you do use air on a piston, safety precaution, make sure you keep your fingers out of the way

      Yea, I forgot the disclaimer! Safety squints and the knowledge that you are effectively turning your caliper into a blunderbuss. Thanks bud!

    Pumping the brake pedal to help dad bleed the brakes was a lot less traumatic than holding the light for him.😅

    Greatly appreciate this video. I did conversion to Liberty disc brakes on my 93 xj; but opted for a Powerstop kit with calipers. 1.5 years later , the right rear caliper froze outward, driving brake pads to metal quickly. Got a reman to get me by, but I have a pair of OEM calipers from JY, and will definitely do rebuild + swap them in. Front calipers are also Powerstop ; and likely will get JY ones and do rebuild too, though so far they seem fine. Worst case I have spares ready. Thanks again for this info.

    I never have rebuilt a caliper, back in the day the “company” would take the core back, and rebuild it, and the next Joe would get it back all shiny new in a box with hammer marks still present. lol
    I guess today they melt it down and recast because your right the latest ones I have gotten have been way rougher.

    Better than anti-seize: silicone grease. It's safe for for the brake internals should anything find its way in there, and it repels moisture better.

      @@DEInTheGarage that's for sure! I've also been working on reviving some old Garden tractors that where left for dead. Currently it's a 1978 John Deere 316K and a 1968 IH Cub Cadet 124. Neither ran before I had them for who knows how long. Old iron is around for a reason they where built real good.

    I would love to rebuild my front brake calipers. 1999 Chevy S10 4wd, dual piston. Need the hydraulic parts and the slide bushings and pins in the mounting bracket. Show me the kit, cause I can't find it.

      @DEInTheGarage  5 месяцев назад

      It doesn't appear they make the kit for the 4x4 which is a bummer. Looks like you can scoop a lot of it individually off Rockauto. Weird there isn't a kit for such a popular GM truck.

    hey boss! any reason a caliper might seize even after a new caliper + new hose replacement? master seems to be fine but i'm dealing with front left sticking repeatedly. oem caliper was seized so good the piston wouldn't pop out with the air trick. thanx for the vid as always!~

    • @DEInTheGarage
      @DEInTheGarage  5 месяцев назад +1

      Check your soft line bud. When they go the can expand and cause weird issues. Yours might be contracting causing pressure to the piston. Always possible you got a bad one out of the box. Good luck with it bud.

      @dracofangxxx 5 месяцев назад

      hey thanks- that was what i meant by "hose", the soft line. replaced and still sticking. appreciate your help, maybe i'll try replacing it again since they are dirt cheap

      I had a remanufactured caliper stick on me. Took it apart and found the bore had lots of paint overspray. It was an epoxy paint so brake fluid did not strip it. I used fine grit sandpaper to remove it. Cleaned real good and reassembled. Worked with no problems ever since.

    • @dracofangxxx
      @dracofangxxx 5 месяцев назад

      hey alex, thanks SO MUCH for this idea dude. i've been going crazy trying to problem solve this. i'll give her a peek!

    • @alex1949
      @alex1949 5 месяцев назад

      @@dracofangxxx Hope you find the problem. My reman caliper's piston would stick even with the seal removed. The overspray was that thick. That epoxy paint took a good while to sand out for me. I think I used 400 grit paper. Didn't want to use one too aggressive and score up the bore. I guess I could have taken the caliper back, but I don't know how good another would have been. I wanted to rebuild the original, but the kit I ordered didn't arrive by the morning before a long trip. That's why I got the reman unit. Good luck!

    R and R with OEM, or a rebuild is the way to go, especially with the junk that is sold from the chinisium world. Their quality of the material, the engineering, and the manufacturing is consistently sh*t. The new camera and the voice over were fine. Happy New Year.
