Rio de Janeiro, aka just Rio, and São Paulo often called SP
The two largest cities in Brazil. Heck, with a metropolitan area population of 21.3 million people, São Paulo is the largest Portuguese speaking city in the world, the second largest city in the entire Southern Hemisphere and 12th largest in the world overall. It’s actually part of an even bigger São Paulo Macrometropolis, which has about 31.5 million people. Geez. Rio de Janeiro, with a metropolitan area population of 13 million people, is the fourth largest city in the Southern Hemisphere and 37th largest city in the world.
About 437 km, or 272 miles apart, or a five and a half hour drive by car, the Brazilian government recently postponed plans to build a $9 billion high speed rail line connecting the two cities that would reduce the trip to just 80 minutes because it would cost...you know…$9 billion.
Don’t be fooled...even though they seem to be hiding down there in the southeast corner of Brazil, both are megacities that dominate the economy and culture of the entire country. Both are near the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Ok, well Rio is right on the coast, and SP is about an hour from it.
Rio de Janeiro is the capital city of the state of Rio de Janeiro. Well hey what a coincidence because São Paulo is the capital city of the state of São Paulo.
Citizens in Rio are often called Cariocas, while citizens of São Paulo are often called Paulistanos or Paulistanas.
Both cities are located in the rugged area known as the Brazilian Highlands, an area filled with cliffs, large hills, and mountains. Both are near the Serra do Mar, a system of mountain ranges that go along the coast.

ik it's not the title but... well you know technically it is.
Well Hello from "India" then!!
Fun fact: Sao Paulo and Rio are so influent that basically all Brazilian media services come from there ( major TV networks, shows, music etc). Because of that, most of the cultural content in Brazil is produced in the Sao Paulo and Rio accents, which make these accents the closest of a "standard Brazilian Portuguese pronunciation" that we have. That also means that almost everyone in the country knows SP/Rio slangs and expressions while many people from SP and Rio may not know much about other Brazilian regional slangs
I'm from São Paulo and I know a lot of slang/expressions from other places, maybe because I live on the outskirts, where there are a lot of people from other states. And what other states know about SP is generally what I call São Paulo from TV, which is a small cut taking into account the size of the city. Even the accent that is considered typical of the city is actually an accent typical of wealthy areas. And it is good to remember that São Paulo is called a rich city, but it is a Brazilian city, that is, it is unequal. When TV takes a more elitist approach, it erases most of the city.
Lol
It sounds like any "big city phenomenon".

I really liked the video. It's really nice to see the city that I love compared to Rio, which is such an amazing place too.
But seriously, you featured the worst images and angles of SP. Specially in the beginning... SP is FAR from perfect but we do have lots of nice neighborhood and streets, I havent seen any in the video, sadly. It's almost like showing Paris but only the slums parts.
Great video, though. You were really accurate on this one. Cheers!

O cara pegou os piores predios lá da do bom retiro e da luz. Quem vê pensa que São Paulo não é desenvolvida como dizem.
@@NSAMEV I Thought the same
O vídeo inteiro parece um tanto enviesado para favorecer o Rio. Não é segredo pra ninguém que o Rio está em franca decadência, enquanto São Paulo segue se desenvolvendo. E não falo isso com felicidade nenhuma. Queria ver as duas cidades bombando...
The video is very unfair for SP!
@@NSAMEV This video is clearly biased towards Rio! The São Paulo images he shows are ridiculous, do not represent the city at all!
Hey, I am brazilian and I really enjoyed this episode. I have a suggestion about an episode: talking about Brasília And Washington D.C, the Federal Districts built to be their countries' capitals. or, maybe, a video about the difference between the capitals of South American countries.
I love the idea, and glad you liked this. :) What part of Brazil are you from?
@@iammrbeat I am from Brasília. But, as a built capital, we are a City made of immigrants from other states. We have deep roots in Rio, because of the old capital. Also, Nordeste, where most of the "candangos - workers that built our capital" came from. Minas Gerais and Goiás played a HUGE role when it comes to populate our city. I was born in Brasília, but I have relatives living in Paraíba, Minas Gerais and São Paulo.
Stupid ideia, Brasília is third world, Washington is first world, I’m brasilian bit I’m not stupid
@@tadeua6652 First of all, you should learn that this is not a polite or social accepted way to disagree with someone’s idea or comment, and stop saying this kind of thing in a such wonderful channel like Mr.Beats’.
Also, you should go back to high school to learn how to understand a point or to develop a way to, I don’t know, read and understand correctly what is written above before saying things. The point of comparing cities, countries and regions is to show that even though they are different, there are some things that may bring them together, and others that differentiate each other. That is the beautiful thing about cultures, people, countries and cities: we have a lot of things that look like the same, but our tiny little differences are what keep us unique in the world.
About the ‘third world country’' thing, the tone set by your comment shows that being a third world country is a shame for you. Yes, we have our problems and we are far from perfection, but I don’t take it as a reason to be ashamed by our country or as an insult. Being a Brazilian is the most wonderful thing in the world. Our people grind each day, with happiness and love. We are kind to people, we are always trying to help. We have a mixed country. People from other countries came here to find a place to live and they found a place to love and call home.
And stop writing useless things on the internet, because all of other countries may think that everyone in our country lacks intelligence just like you do. You are just looking like a fool, or maybe you are one.
P.S: Sorry, Mr. Beats, for this little discussion. I just can’t stand people talking negative or pejorative things about my beloved land.

Sao Paulo is, indeed, very similar to New York (albeit, larger); as for Rio de Janeiro, I think it would be "fairer" to compare it to Philadelphia, than to Los Angeles.

São Paulo is a concrete jungle and the nearest beach is at least 45min away. However, I do miss the street art and the amazing food. In the end, it depends on which type of city you prefer. São Paulo is the most underrated developed city in the world. It may be ignored by most, but the ones that get to visit just fall in love easily.

Very good and accurate summary. Kudos!
I was expecting you to talk about some sports teams of each city... You have four large football teams in each of the cities, which are usually the ones people from other parts of the country without large teams support as well.
I knew that if I did that I would ultimately just make a bunch of people mad like when I did the Melbourne/Sydney video. :D
Well, there are 3 large footballs teams in the city São Paulo (Palmeiras, São Paulo and Corinthians), and 4 large in Rio (Flamengo, Vasco, Botafogo and Fluminense). The other big team of São Paulo (state) is not in the city of São Paulo, but in the coastal city of Santos. And yeah, this team is called Santos.
Rio has four big football teams, SP has two. Santos is from another city, and the little team in Itaquera is not worth writing about.
There are two big teams in SP: Sao Paulo and Palmeiras. Santos is from another city, and the minnows from Itaquera are terrible.
Yeah like how the best two current Brazilian players r each from these cities like Neymar (Sao Paulo) and Thiago Silva (Rio De Janeiro). That would've been a nice thing to bring up!
- The chosen images of sao paulo were the worst possible. Sao Paulo is a cosmopolitan city and this aesthetic has not been shown.
- Sao Paulo's economy is much bigger than Rio de Janeiro's. If the states are compared, the difference is even greater

Hi Mr. Beat! Can you compare Wellington and Auckland of New Zealand? Would really appreciate it. Love your videos!!! More subs to you man : D
Thanks Juan! It means a lot. :D And thanks for the suggestion!
Auckland vs an Australian city would be more entertaining
Ok, Mr. Beat, you got a lot of correct informations, about both cities... Congratulations, your source of information are great! I'm from São Paulo, and I usually, call my city New York brasilian, because both have chaotic traffic, busy nightlife, parks, lots foreing communities... am I correct in comparing the two cities? I believe so.
Yeah, I hear that comparison a lot. Thanks for watching!
Nah not really. São Paulo is more like Toronto. You should call it Brazilian Toronto. New York is a flourishing metropolis. São Paulo is a 3rd world slum. Don’t compare our mega city in America to your slum in Brazil. You’re offending us Americans.
You’ve clearly never been to New York and never will be because we Americans don’t want you here!
Pretty accurate video, Mr. Beat. Love from Rio!
Could you make another compare video of the difference from the South to the North of Brazil? Your video is awesome! A big hug from Brazil!
Awesome video! Would love to see Texas vs. California and possibly Madrid vs. Barcelona some time in the future!
You could also compare:
Dubai and Abu Dhabi
Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City
Addis Ababa and Nairobi
Manchester and Birmingham
Marseille and Nice
Rome and Milan
Zurich and Geneva
Stockholm and Oslo or Copenhagen or Helsinki
Frankfurt and Munich or Berlin?
Riyadh and Jeddah
Singapore and Hong Kong
That's a heck of a list. Thanks for those suggestions, and thanks for the kind words. :)
The government promised that this high speed train would be ready in time for the FIFA world cup... 😂 I imagine they were talking about the next world cup Brazil will hold in 2064 😂
Nice video bro
Thanks, nice job.
Nice video!
Please, compare Saint Petersburg and Moscow. That would be really nice!
Thanks for comparing our 2 biggest city! I love your content (especially the American Election thought American History).
Represent! And that's awesome you dig U.S. history! :)
@@iammrbeat digging and trying to understand the electoral college
No you don’t like American elections throughout American history. You’re an ignorant foreigner who read 1 article from one American news site and now you think you’re an expert when you aren’t and never will be.
Otimo video, Sr. Beat!
Great video!! Thank you, Mr. Beat! Hope to see more comparisons of international cities. Maybe Lima vs Cuzco? Regards from a Peruvian subscriber!
Simple:
São Paulo City: 12 mi
Jakarta City: 9,6 mi
São Paulo Metropolitan Population: 21,5 mi
Jakarta metropolitan population: 30,2 mi
Why would you want more ppl in less space , MonkaS
Yeah, but counting a city proper without its metropolitan area is... pointless.
@@aaetherakashaa4143 verticalization is pretty good for most things bro. Better than endless traffic.
Sao Paulo is officially the biggest city in the Southern Hemisphere.
jakarta: am i a joke to you?
CITY
But not metropolitanian region
I was there last year 2019 for 3 weeks, so very beautiful we went in July which is their winter which is dry. I recommend it highly
Great video, i'm Brazilian finally a video about my country. :)
I have some international ideas do freeport and Nassau Caracas and Bogotá and do Moscow and st Petersburg
I like both of those ideas! :D
Hey @Mr.Beat here's an idea for a future comparison video. Moscow vs. St. Petersburg.
I always love that suggestion when I see it. :D
great video amigo
Great video! What about doing a video of:
Tokyo vs Seoul
Nairobi vs Addis Ababa
Beijing vs Shanghai
Hamburg vs Munich
Geneva vs Zurich
The video is awesome, but there is an error. São Paulo has 21 Million people, so here the traffic is a lot worst.
(Sorry for bad English)
Can't wait I 'll be visiting both cities in December!
Hope you loved
@@fdivito12 yes I visited in December 2019. I m in love with Brazil!

Portuguese-speaking countries need to work on their marketing. The Spanish-speakers have us saying "jalapeño" properly, but we're stuck with "Sow Powlo".
You guys need a good marketing to start using Celsius as well.
Cool, you should make more videos about South America countries and cities. Ex: Bogotá- Medellín, Argentina-Chile...
I definitely should make more videos about South American in general. :D
Hey man im a paulistano, and this video is really informative and fun! Congrats
Buenos Aires vs Montevideo mabye?
That one makes sense!
@@iammrbeat I think Buenos Aires vs Santiga makes more sense, Montevideo is quite small
