Watches are as much an investment as buying a racehorse. Both are surely speculation. How much income do your watch "investments" regularly pay as that is the usual definition of a financial investment so as to price. Possibly a "store of value" is more relevant than "investment".

I’m not in the “watch business” but I am in “business” & I’ve come across many people over the years who I just call them trumpet blowers who want to shout at you how well they are doing but whose lifestyles are all based on someone else’s money, I also value professionalism & watching “ Jack the lad dealers” thinking they are tycoon businessmen annoys me.

Thank you for sharing, David! I started watching your video in 2022 and learned much from you about modern and vintage watches. Sadly, you are getting bashed for being a watch dealer. Having been in the hobby, I can understand the frustration of watch collectors, but the price of watches is not dictated by only watch dealers (it's a combination of demand and supply). Watch dealers are merely facilitating the transaction

David, it is very sad that so many people wanted the get rich quick scheme and many jumped into the watch market as online dealers who had no background as a watchmaker or sales in watches experience .
The flippers were fed by the Greymarket and the Greymarket grew by leaps and bounds but were at the biggest risk since they were the real reason why the market had a reset .
They pushed up the values and also built up the margins and yet lied to people and used the internet to peddle their hyped up wares.
Only few dealers like yourself were smart and had sense to know what was going on .
People bought the hype and paid 40k for a 14k Daytona Panda or 35k for a 10k GMT master II Pepsi 126710BLRO and even buying 5711 for 400% over the retail price .
Just like you said on this video you are having to respond so some subscriber’s with their comments that are irrelevant .
Nobody has a crystal ball and anyone speculating on a watch and price based on hype and lack of availability is not being smart with money especially.
You are in my opinion one of the smartest watch dealers online and that has a brick and mortar business .
    Best wishes .

One question, David: what do you think of the price of 5-digit no date subs at the moment? It seems they are a good price - between 8k and 10k USD. My thinking: yes they are very common watches, but they are so charming and popular they will go up again. What do you think and which ones to look out for?

4 and 5 digit Rolex remain where the smart money goes..prices have shown very steady increases and will continue to do so..unfortunately the market is full of those who just see watches as commodities and know nothing whatsoever about Horology….just an example is my 16518 which has doubled in value in the past 3 years..there are so many pieces that are better than the watches that are not available to ordinary people at their local AD.

As long as anxiety, existential emptiness, and depression continue to exist, disguised in two aspects: "I am a collector" and "the watch is an investment", this has taken Rolex to heights that not even they had dreamed of and in the process some have been left behind. poorer. Rolex is state of the industry, not state of the art... the days of the Red Submariner, for example, are long gone. In short, everyone is free to spend their money as they see fit, but the market is showing signs of overheating... caution

Good comments as usual. I dont know what people expect as you are in business and if the naysayers work for a Company that doesn’t make a profit then they will soon be unemployed. Business is often seen as buying low and selling high but in your case (most businesses in fact) they seem to forget the value added. Bricks and mortar overheads, staff, security, insurance etc etc. no to mention the cost of money tied up in stock like most retail in order to have a choice. Some people are very naive.

Love the content. Couple of points…
    1. We can blame flippers all day long but end of the day there was an irrational bid in the market and these guys filled the demand and unsustainable price levels. Bubbles / hype occurs when buyers (investors) believe the price is right even when it surpasses fundamentals. What I’m saying is that the flippers as lowly we hold them provided a service and maybe we need to concede that like some other assets were pumped by other actors. It’s not the flippers fault people paid the price. Equally when the music stopped and the market corrected they held the watches and would have taken a loss inventory. They were “dealers” in a super strong market. And now they are no more coz they are not established unlike yourself.
    2. Very good point regarding the 250k price on a modern Daytona. Massively reflects the instant gratification of today’s society. With such a short production it will obvs be a winner in 25years+ but to buy it now thinking it’ll be 500k in 2 years is optimistic. In my eyes it’s only an investment if you pay 250k and write it off and see how it plays out. Too rich for most of us!

I've had fair success buying watches that increased in value, none of which were Rolex. You have to focus on niches. Military, 50-60s chronos, important seikos, etc are all niches. Do your research, then do more reading. Try to find interesting and undervalued histories; not everything needs 1000s of profit. I purchased 6 vintage quartz seikos for $ 300 and wore them for a few years before selling them for $ 500 each. The watches had an overlooked high-end movement imitated by Rolex and AP. Did you know Baume and Mercier made watches with micro-rotors in the '60s and were considered high-end? These watches can be collected for under 2k and are still enjoyable to wear. The Royal Oak was first shown in white gold and later manufactured in steel, is a white gold version truer to the OG vision, maybe? I can't tell you where the market will turn, but researching and buying within a niche is fun and can be very rewarding.

Many did very well but it's not for everyone to understand as everything else in this world, a lot of experience in the field is required.

    • @Jungleman707
      @Jungleman707 3 месяца назад

@@Mr.Khalil08 Thank you for reply. Its true that Journe is a modern day Breguet, his work is revolutionary and exquisite. Those stone Rolex dials were and are still amazing. If I try to apply your thinking to modern watches, I would say the Rolex 128348RBR could be a future treasure, also because of its incredible carnelite, aventurine, eisnkiesel or turquoise dials and probable rarity. Some may deserve to, but not get there due to brand weakness, like the new JLC Duometres that were launched this year. Is there any other future treasure that is currently unappreciated?

Watches are like art inasmuch that the prices asked are often not quantifiable in any hard rational way. It's very much a case of them being worth what somebody is willing to pay. There's a dealer whose website I look at every now and again, and he was asking 40 grand (British Pounds) for a tiffany blue dial 41mm Rolex OP a couple of years ago. The last time I looked, he was asking 20 grand - as far as I can tell for the same watch that never sold. Meanwhile another dealer (a guy I have dealt with and know to be rock-solid) seems to have just sold one of these for 6.5 grand - which is probably an honest-to-goodness realistic price for an entry level time-only Rolex... But I guess there might be some poor souls out there who literally paid tens of thousands for this watch!?
As for me, I've always had an iron rule: I have never paid above retail for any Rolex or Patek which is in current production. If you can't get it at retail, then you don't get it - period. (This way, if you want/need to sell, you might lose 10-15%, or something, but you you wont get really badly f----ed.)

Buying a watch such as Rolex, AP etc is way to invest your money like gold. The benefit of a watch is that you can also enjoy wearing it. Those that pay over the odds for a watch are nuts, it’s a big risk. The brands I have mentioned will always go up with inflation.

In times of insane monetary debasement , even TULIPS can become investment grade .....So let's say the that PN Daytona is a very fine looking Tulip some are willing to pay the ( insane ) price to call dibs on , nobody can say for sure that the mania is finished , we could just have went through one of the first "micro" spike , or maybe the next spike will manifest in the form of a mania on vintage pocket watches .....What we can say for sure tho is that the clowns up there are gonna print money like CRAZY at some point ( maybe after a little deflationary shakeout )

The only people who care about the watch market being dead are people who dont own a Rolex. Stop being cheap and go pay the market price.

@@Mr.Khalil08 Am I wrong? Why would anyone who already owns a Rolex care if the market is dead or not? They already own one, so they couldn’t care less. Everyone who doesn’t own one are crying about prices. There are people out there who have more money than they do, and are willing to spend the premium to buy the watches they want. Simple as that.
