Kylo Ren is one of the best things to ever happen to Star Wars. He's a fascinating character who straddles the line between being chaotic and lost, and also internally consistent and understandable. His actions are volatile, almost unpredictable at first, but upon further examination you see the psychology that directs them. Plus, his character offers a much more realistic image of how young men are manipulated toward their darker impulses.
No, he really is not. He's a one-dimensional edgelord with no real motivation for wanting to be evil. There is NOTHING understandable to why would he give up on his family just to be a Vader wannabe and join with poorman Imperial nutjobs. Outside of the clownish rage fits, there's really nothing behind it. And what ? More realistic ? Are you on meth or something ? Also, for the record, there was a better version of the character called Jacen Solo/Darth Caedus. Let that sink in.
He’s definitely the most consistently layered. The fact that he can go from fearsome and cruel to sympathetic and relatable is fascinating. Adam Driver really delivered with his portrayal
Let me just say how amazingly refreshing it is that your channel exists. It’s wonderful to be able to listen to commentary from someone who seems to genuinely have strong positive feelings for the sequel trilogy and is willing to give it the attention and analyses it deserves.
This was great! I love Kylo Ren. He is my favorite character in the sequel trilogy because he's so complex. Adam Driver also does a great job of bringing Kylo Ren to life.
That blanket Rey had wrapped around her in the hut with Kylo, he gave it to her through the force. It disappears as the hut is blown apart by Luke, watch very carefully!
Best Star Wars character of all time. He's going to be the good guy. Rey's lightsaber makes the sith sound in the first trailer, and Kylo is the first person shown after "Every generation has a legend."
Having Kylo and Rey think they’ll change sides bc of a vision they saw but actually making them misinterpret the vision all the while making them join forces indeed proves that Rian Johnson is a genius
@@alexfelix5533 Darth isn't necessary. A lot of the early Sith didn't have the name. It's more of the lack of commitment to the Sith ideals. Dark Jedi use the dark side, Sith embrace it. Kylo is definitely not embracing the dark side.
The throne room scene where Kylo and Snoke physically interact with each other for the first time is one of my favorite scenes from Star Wars. We get all the information we need to understand who Snoke is and why Ben is presently in so much pain. Snoke emotionally, verbally, mentally and physically berates Ben and continuously gaslights him, example: Snoke says there is too much of his father in Ben and he responds that he killed his father, that he did what Snoke wanted and Snoke sneers (one of my favorite lines) “and look what it’s done to you...it’s split your spirit to the bone.” He goes back on his previous sentiments that Ben needs to kill his father and makes it sound like all the negative outcomes from that murder are Bens fault. It’s subtly informed to the audience that Snoke is an abusive manipulative person. My personal theory on the death of Han is that Snoke really convinced Ben to kill him so that Ben could never leave and return to his family i.e. “oh you want to leave? Oh honey whose gonna love you now? You think you can go home to mommy? She hates you, you killed your father, you have nowhere to go, you’re here with me forever.”
The abusive nature of Snoke towards Kylo ( or anyone for that matter) is in no way subtle. It is very apparent from the very first time we see him on screen. I mean I guess if you watch the movies with your eyes closed and the volume muted it's subtle.
Chance Windham well it’s super obvious to me too, but when I mention this concept to people (Snoke being a manipulative gaslighting abuser) they look at me like I’m insane and often ask how could I have possibly come to that conclusion. This happens all the time. I don’t know, it’s stupid obvious to me but I guess these people must be watching it muted and blindfolded.
Maybe he was right all along. And the rest of the galaxy dies as a way of redemption. And then we have a post apocaliptic movie about Kylo making soup and talking to himself.
Agreed agreed agreed. I hope if there's a redemption arc, maybe he's training the Jedi or something (or whatever generically named group of "good guy" Force users there are). Someone who goes from the light all the way through to what the dark side offers to then come back from that edge to settle in a sort of Mace Windu spot maybe. Sort of the Star Warsy equivalent of a mass murderer turned preacher LOL but it would be compelling. EDIT: Though I wouldn't want it to feel awkward and I doubt a single movie could take him through that entire arc. It would need much more time to be convincing. So maybe if they left him at the very start of that process, alive and having done his sort of "redemptive act" or whatever, with it being clear that relearning good would be his future, THEN it could work.
I think I'm way too obsessed with Ben/Kylo/Adam. For real.. After watching the first episode in the trilogy, I became absolutely OBSESSED with him.. Buying all the merch, making playlists, and even memorizing all of his lines.. in order
I also like that you mention Ben's abandonment, because that's also something he and Rey share. Ben killing Snoke was also the first time he was free to make his own decisions and destiny. The conversation he's having with Rey was of that, but also a discussion where everything he says about her is also about himself (you're still holding on, let go!).
What a stellar , poignant, well thought out recap. I have said countless times for many months that I've been commenting on this channel about Kylo Ren/Ben Solo. Now disclaimer it wouldn't be fair for me to say that this is the only character who's had such a tremendous transformation because everyone has this trilogy is all about change and people growing up and finding themselves through conflicting times as well as grow. But let me also say aside from people like you and many of us no one else has gone bat and defended and know this character inside and out more than Adam Driver. I'm excited and I'm a little nervous and skeptical for what will happen to him next week but I'm not gonna let my fear take over either. So here's to another compelling video essay and looking forward to the next recap..🙌🎉
I love all the depth to Ben's character. It's almost like he's a character that is precisely split between Vader's introspective, calculating and anger-sharpened self and Anakin's purity but brattier, uncontrolled and destructive emotional cycles. Ironically, he's sort of everything that Anakin and Vader were, but he can't reach the peace Vader seemed to occasionally find in his darkness (in the end ofc, even the great dark lord Vader couldn't be satisfied through it tho)
Ever since he was revealed his mask reminded me a lot of Revan’s. And just like Revan, Kylo is a layered and complex character. One of the most interesting in the saga. Which is why I hope they don’t mess it up in the next act, especially after he came so close to redemption in the last movie.

You're a very much needed refreshing change of pace on the sequel trilogy. For 4 years now I (along with all of us I assume) have had to deal with the cesspool that is Star Wars fans' inability to acknowledge the fantastic storytelling leaps Disney has made. Nothing is without flaw, it's up to the viewer whether they concern themselves with the good or the bad.
After TFA Ben was definitely my favourite sequel trilogy character and I kinda had a wish that because we'd already seen people fall to the darkside and become a sith apprentice, but we'd only heard about sith apprentices supperceding their masters and though I Ben isn't strictly sith I really kinda was actually rooting for him to take control and become THE big bad of the galaxy. I didn't actually expect to get it, certainly not in TLJ, but then the "Long live the Supreme Leader" scene came and I was silently having a fit of excitement in my seat.
spencer o'keeffe i know!! It just made my smile grew so huge when Hux realized “oh shit. The guy with this mystical power and no one to reign him in is in charge.” Kylo is THE main villain we’ve longed to see portrayed on the big screen.
Great video! If I were to add anything to what you have said, it would be to emphasis how Kylo killing Han was deemed necessary by Snoke because he did still love his father. Snoke emphasized how Vader’s fatal error was to succumb to his compassion for Luke. Could Kylo eradicate that part of himself? And while we understand that he was disappointed in Han and felt rejected by his father, he did still love him. Thus the split to the bone. I’m really curious what role Han will play in TROS. Because whether actual present in any form, I still expect Han will continue to impact his son’s story. I also often reflect on what Adam Driver said in an interview with Larry King prior to the release of TLJ. Larry King wanted to know if Kylo would be alive at the end of the movie. Adam responded that it depended on what your definition of living was.
I feel like a lot of people mistake Kylo’s slow battle style for the fact that his lightsaber is very clearly built like a broadsword. His attacks are meant to be slow but they are timed and thought through (it also makes for more powerful attacks).
I am watching this after the Rise of Skywalker and I can say this actually made the trilogy make more sense. Its a deep story of two people with internal challenges and how their small decisions have huge impacts on the galaxy.
Great review of the evolution of Ben Solo character to the current rise of Kylo Ren. It should be interesting to see to what happens to Kylo Ren character in the upcoming movie TROS.
I’m not really a Star Wars, but I’m talking to this girl and she’s a huge fan of the series, I’ve been watching soooo many videos about the timelines, the characters, the regions, and this one helped me out so much to understand who Kylo Ren is and of course, Rey. Thanks so much man. Awesome content
9:17 Kylo hadn't heard about Rey numerous times while searching for the droid and the map, because she literally only came into contact with both of them right as the Order touched down on Jakku upon learning Poe and Finn crashed there. His interest in Rey is because he's had Force visions of her, just as Rey had Force visions of him when she found Luke's lightsaber. I've a pretty good idea that what he saw was her kissing him, considering the "We'll see," remark he made after Rey told him she'd give him nothing during the interrogation scene, and also his response to her reaction at the very end of TRoS. His reaction was as though he'd finally gotten what he'd been expecting, and hoping for, since he first saw the vision of her.
11:40 It's not Kylo's first real duel with someone wielding a lightsaber, he was trained at Luke's Jedi academy, with other Jedi in training that he practiced with, which were all murdered when Kylo turned to the dark side upon Luke trying to murder him. The reason Kylo lost that duel was because he didn't want to harm Rey, he knew he had a future with her in it. She also siphoned Force knowledge from him twice by that point, once in the interrogation room, and again while she stood hovering over the edge of the cliff.
Me when coming out of TLJ: THE SEQUEL TRILOGY IS AWSOOOOME Me seeing all the criticisms: Eh, its enjoyable... Me, finding this channel weeks before ep9: THE SEQUEL TRILOGY IS AWSOOOOME Me, coming out of TROS: oh boy
It's so fun to go back and watch these pre-TROS videos (from you and other channels) knowing what we know now. Though I have mixed feelings about TROS, I did really enjoy Kylo/Ben's subplot, and since he's my favorite SW character, I'm glad that I at least liked how his story went (even if I wish he hadn't, ya know....)
"Just a child.... in a mask." I love this line by snoke. Shows what kylo had been doing wrong this whole time. Then kylo fixed that by fuckin killing snoke!
Thank you for the great summary on my favorite character in the pantheon. I must stress that I’m not a villain fan, never have been. I’m a fan of the heroes. I believe in the character for many reasons and it started the moment he walked out of the light and into the dark of the Jakku village. A village, as we know, is where Anakin’s fall began. For the future to be redeemed mistakes of the past must be corrected.
Great video! Can you and GWS rescue us from the Jedi Paxis leaks?! I need to stop listening to people talk about them because they just make me sad. This is a fantastic video about Kylo Ren!! I’m so hoping that he doesn’t die even to save Rey. I don’t want the bloodline of Skywalker to end. I’m in agony!! OMG!! 🙃
Just an interesting thought I had on Kylo/Ben being "a child in a mask" he's never really grown up because he never had anyone to really help him to. Same with Anakin and Rey.
Let’s be honest: THIS is how we all imagined Anakin rose to his fate as Darth Vader back in the days before the prequels. But Lucas had a specific notion how His Fall was more tragic. But the crew behind the sequels understand they can’t be like Vader so they need a far more conflicted individual but at the same time someone who’s determined to follow the destiny HE has chosen, his masters be damned.
Dude I just recently started watching your channel and I have to say, it's top notch. I love your lightsaber analysis videos, and everything keeps giving me new perspectives on the films. Also really makes me appreciate the last Jedi more haha. So kudos to you and keep up the content!!
Kylo’s character is severely underdeveloped in the movies, the explanation behind him turning to the dark side and worshipping Darth Vader even though Anakin turned to the light and became a Force Ghost is almost nonexistent besides Luke’s out of character moment of fear and passing mention of Snoke’s vague corruption.
I love your knowledge and contribution your positive and the fact that you truely are a Star Wars Fan. On the day of the world premiere may the force be with you always. UK Starwars Family
I think the best thing too come out of TLJ is the subtle romance between Rey and Kylo. Maybe I'm reading into it too much, maybe the actors playing them have amazing on screen chemistry, thats not how I read it though. Two people consumed by the mounting fears of what their future entails and what their past provides find each other. Find someone else who is just as powerful and just as confused as they are. I really hope they're not related at all.

The reason Kylo lost that duel was because he didn't want to harm Rey, he knew he had a future with her in it. She also siphoned Force knowledge from him twice by that point, once in the interrogation room, and again while she stood hovering over the edge of the cliff.
Other than that, excellent and accurate recap!
Me when coming out of TLJ: THE SEQUEL TRILOGY IS AWSOOOOME
Me seeing all the criticisms: Eh, its enjoyable...
Me, finding this channel weeks before ep9: THE SEQUEL TRILOGY IS AWSOOOOME
Me, coming out of TROS: oh boy
TROS and TLJ both had iffy elements. We can still overlook them and enjoy the things we can.
Kung Olaf Yeah but I’ll always prefer Prequels and original trilogy
Kylo Ren is my favorite character of the new Star Wars saga. He is so interesting and complexed and intriguing.
Brilliant analysis. You clearly have a love and appreciation for good storytelling.
Kylo Ren the 🐐
Facts.
What a fantastic character review! Really enjoy your videos :)
So good. Great job!
*HelloGreedo* and *AT-AT Chat* give me hope for the Star Wars fandom.
"Just a child.... in a mask." I love this line by snoke. Shows what kylo had been doing wrong this whole time. Then kylo fixed that by fuckin killing snoke!
Pretty awesome video
If u keep making vids like this you'll grow trust me
This is quickly becoming one of my favorite channels. Excellent video!
Drink every time I say "essentially".
Sure essentially 😆
Can't say I noticed.
Fun Fact: Chandrila is the homeworld of senator mon mothma.
Love your vids man. Good analysis and thoughts. Keep up the good work!
KYLO REN/BEN SOLO ROCKS!
This was an absolutely incredible analysis and recap. Was expecting average youtube stuff but that was quite good. Subscribed.
Thanks!!
Kylo should of been the main character of the trilogy
Great video! Can you and GWS rescue us from the Jedi Paxis leaks?! I need to stop listening to people talk about them because they just make me sad. This is a fantastic video about Kylo Ren!! I’m so hoping that he doesn’t die even to save Rey. I don’t want the bloodline of Skywalker to end. I’m in agony!! OMG!! 🙃
I really love your Ben Kylo Ren deep dive videos. Keep it up bro!
How the hell did he get to the forest before finn and rey?! Can he teleport or something?
Kylo is such a great character! If you guys love Adam driver make sure to watch marriage story, best acting I’ve seen all year.
Great recap! Kylo is my favorite character in Star Wars! I can't wait for TROS!
I would love to see him redeemed but instead of dying, wandering the galaxy to foreign planets helping others, atoning for his sins.
This actually made me like Kylo Ren a little bit more, good video 👌🏾..
LOL... No we didn't. Anakin's story is actually good.
I dont see how anyone can not like starwars its so interesting they’re stories and everything
dude you are awesome.
Dude I just recently started watching your channel and I have to say, it's top notch. I love your lightsaber analysis videos, and everything keeps giving me new perspectives on the films. Also really makes me appreciate the last Jedi more haha. So kudos to you and keep up the content!!
This channel deserves more subs tbh
Thank-you for this video!💕
Wowsers! This is an amazing video!
Great content dude I’m glad I came across your channel thanks
Great video!
If the leaks are true both of those things will be explained in the last movie
Love that porg at the end- so cute! :)
in star wars the "villains" always have the best arcs.... even Hux in the comics has a dope arc
I love your knowledge and contribution your positive and the fact that you truely are a Star Wars Fan. On the day of the world premiere may the force be with you always. UK Starwars Family

@@ATATChat Namaste my Star Wars friend 🙇♀️
I think the best thing too come out of TLJ is the subtle romance between Rey and Kylo. Maybe I'm reading into it too much, maybe the actors playing them have amazing on screen chemistry, thats not how I read it though. Two people consumed by the mounting fears of what their future entails and what their past provides find each other. Find someone else who is just as powerful and just as confused as they are. I really hope they're not related at all.
Say what you want about the sequels, but kylo is just the best
great video, thank you :)
Very good analysis
