Her passing is a sad loss for the opera world. In the opinion of many (self included), she was the greatest mezzo of the post-war era. Thankfully she has left a huge recorded legacy. Also her many interviews such as this one attest to her down-to-earth, lovely, warm personality. RIP
Dear friends, I just came across this wonderful interview. Christa Ludwig was a famous singer, but I did not know her charm and talent for storytelling until today. I am German, but lived in the USA for 30 years. I would like to thank the person who wrote the English subtitles! There were maybe two or three minor glitches (just in case someone wants to be extra perfect), but what a wonderful job, and so important for those of you who want to learn and understand more about Karajan.
Frau Ludwig should now embark upon her next career as Queen Elizabeth's body double, while for someone who smoked cigarettes on an apparently daily basis (as was the case too with Fischer-Dieskau) her longevity is amazing! Thanks CL for your great music making legacy.
since the queen's execution on dec 5 2019, I agree Ludwig could play her, but now they have this other old hag, who is complaining daily about playing elizabeth and wants desperately the MSM to finally reveal her death. 2 1/2 years now this double has been playing the queen and she is tired of it.

One of the few singers who worked with Karajan as an equal. Most worked with him as subordinates, and we see the results. And then there was Nilsson, who shot from the hip and was arguably even more powerful in the opera world.
Dear Geoffrey, thank you for your praise! The excerpt is from the comic ballet "Coppélia ou la Fille aux yeux d'émail" by Léo Delibes. Or more precisely Act 1, N.07 "Variation sur un theme slave". The recording is from 1961-04-28 at the Jesus-Christus-Kirche Berlin. With the Berlin Philharmonics conducted by Karajan.
Frau Ludwig might feel diifferently if she were Jewish. It's easy to explain away inconvenient truths if you were never to object of discrimination. That said, Frau Ludwig was a great artist.
I listened to about 20 seconds of this and then stopped. Christa Ludwig is a hero to me. She is someone whose humanity shines through everthing she has ever done. She is a true artist who speaks to humanity. That is not true of Karajan. He was a technically competent artist who was ambitious and, through good fortune (including an unfortunate past conveniently forgotten - extremely unfortunate, let's be honest) and especially through good marketing (not to say "rehabilitation"which seems to go on well beyond his death - this video is an extraordinary example of it) has somehow - and God know how - a somehow untarnished reputation. Let's turn the page on Karajan and instead celebrate the life and career of Christa Ludwig . .
“an unfortunate past conveniently forgotten” As a totality , it has been exhaustively documented in all the films/ books on him. Also, some of his closest assosciates were Jewish: Alexis Weissenberg and Michel Glotz, and many others. Would they have tolerated him if he clung on to Nazi ideals? I doubt it. “technically competent artist” You need a *bit* more than that to pull you through the complexities (both technical and musical) of Berg’s Three Orchestral Pieces and Mahler 9 to mention just two pieces in his repertoire. It was a very particular vision, and not suited to everything but at his best, the results were extraordinary.
So Karajan went to the Nazis to make a faster and better career? And nobody seems to care later. And Ludwig says this like a little joke, a funny story??? That tells you a lot about Karajan and Ludwig. IT MAKES ME PUKE. I am from Salzburg, I am a musician myself.
some of his closest associates were Jewish , and - in one case- had been incarcerated in a concentration camp (Alexis Weissenberg). He was no saint, but.... alot of armchair criticism going on

I've always adored Christa Ludwig for her beautiful voice, her musicianship, her artistry, and her willingness to tell the details of her private life in her autobiography (very much recommended). But Karajan? As Birgit Nilsson said, "Nu, where's Herbie?" When you take the lift up the ski slope, nobody gets killed. But the Nazis killed millions of Russians, Jews, Poles, Brits. Sorry, no, I can't get past it -- to me, Karajan was lower than the dirt. I'd happily listen to any other conductor.
How nice how she adored him how she loves him. Christa, l'm always searching your concerts and your singings. Thanks ❤❤
Christa Ludwig is such a lovely woman as well as a legend in her own right.

Karajan was a genius. A fact that irritates many. But a genius he was.
I think more people are irritated that he was a Nazi.

Cigarettes? Really? Surprising although it's not the first time I've heard this: Caballe proprortedly was a heavy smoker---Camels, no less!
Though I recall reading that she very suddenly stopped smoking. At what stage of her life I can’t remember.

I see no English titles.
