    So excited to see this!!!!! Madonna is a great actress but the problem is she was so iconic that every role she was in people saw Madonna & not her character. This is why her performance in “Evita” was praised by the critics...since it is a musical, people tended to recognize her acting 🎭

    You called it! James Foley who directed the movie “at close range” directed live to tell, papa and true blue! She transforms herself for each video, because as Madonna says, her videos are short films. Hollywood patriarchy couldn’t handle her being a triple threat! But she is! She said, “I’m not a bad actress, I’ve just been in a lot of bad movies”

    This video is cinema 🎞 So well directed by James Foley (who yes also directed Live To Tell and the film it’s from, At Close Range). Madonna’s look in it was compared to the “gamine” look made famous by actresses Jean Seberg and Edie Sedgwick, among others. Her sailor striped t-shirt and high waisted jeans with ballet style shoes look, as well as the strapless black catsuit, looked edgy 80s but was actually drawing on Mod street fashion of the 60s and French New Wave cinema of the 1950s. Speaking of that incredible look for the dance sequences, if you watch closely there are a couple of famous nipple slips each time she does the throw-head-back move! I mentioned in another comment about the opening shots. Much like the symbolism in the opening credits of Sex And The City, the opening shots of New York in this video tell a little story of personal freedom, sex, impregnation and orgasm in the Statue of Liberty, the jump cut shots going deeper into the docks, the orgasm of pigeons flying and more obviously the babies and children that follow. Also the guys vs girls in the groups captured at the beginning complete the statement. As a music video director and storyboard artist myself I always notice when visual metaphor is used in film. People forget how much time, effort and money it takes to get a shot, so when something is well made there are rarely any shots that haven’t been thoroughly considered for their significance from both a storytelling and symbolic angle. Adding confirmation to this reading is the quality of James Foley as a filmmaker and his obvious love of French New Wave, a wave of 1950-60s directors who drew stylistically on American Film Noir, both of which are highly symbolist cinematic movements 🎥

    This video was impressive because it was a mini-movie with none other than Danny Aiello as her father. The family drama was very palpable throughout, and Madonna as a teenager was convincing. I've always liked her pixie haircut; later she'll have one only as a brunette. Great reaction with equally great observations and analysis!

  • @Gholden1972
    @Gholden1972 3 года назад +18

    The late Danny Aiello - the guy who played the dad. Great actor. Your observations are so spot on. She’s acting and then she was someone else when she was singing. So glad you loved this. The first time watching this was an event. When it dropped this was the start of her icon status. Just think of it - under 4 years of her debut.

    Everyone was shocked at the time with the huge image change. I think that was our initial reaction. We were used to her having long hair, wearing lace, and a lot of jewelry. and then suddenly she had short blond hair, and looks like Marilyn Monroe. It was like a different woman suddenly.

    A couple of people have commented about Debi Mazar, Madonna’s long-time friend who appears in this video. Debi actually appears in 5 of M’s videos- which must be some sort of record. 🏆
    Debi has actually had a long career as a actress, mostly in supporting roles and especially known for her tart-tongued quips and heavy Queens (or is it Long Island?) accent. She and Madonna met during the Danceteria days and Debi did M’s hair and makeup on the Everybody video. I think M surrounded herself with “tough” women and if you heard Debi you would immediately understand why they are friends.
    Also, fun fact... Debi was partnered with Paul Rubens (Pee Wee Herman) for most of the 90s.

    This video is perfect. Everyone acted perfectly. The father was Danny Aiello who was in Moonstruck I think and some other significant films. The boyfriend was in a film called Desert Hearts but I don’t think he ever had a huge career. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was a model as well because he was so damn hot I wanted him to impregnate me... or die trying. Lol
    The girlfriend in orange is Madonna’s real bestie, Debbie Mazar, who you’ll also see in the True Blue and Deeper and Deeper videos as you continue the journey.
    Only thing that made me laugh. The little girl in the home movie being blonde... M, we know you were a natural brunette. Quit playin’ lol

    Brilliant video and reaction.. I nearly got fired for being late because I wanted to watch and record it.. Haha. It blew me away.
    As in all her videos she is captivating and demonstrates considerable acting skills. She is a good actress.. She's been in some dodgy films and played some interesting archetypes.. Hollywood cldnt manipulate her and what I find interesting is the need for press and media to topple a star.. Take the shine off them. Stories circulated about her being a diva on set and being a bad actress before anybody saw her actual film(Shanghai Surprise).. When she's good they accuse her of being and just playing herself..She can't win.... Having won Golden Globes Best Actress(Evita) she was snubbed by The Hollywood establishment at The Oscars the same year..... She has incredible presence and charisma.. And maybe she has much more control in these videos or its a medium in which(then) she was v comfortable with. She acts in her songs and here's something I've always thought., she's an emotional singer.. Its connected singing.. It affects, moves, provokes, engages.. as a, result it isn't always perfect, like life and emotions, it's sometimes, raw, raspy, flat, sharp, angry, vulnerable.. And then the technical music police, the vocal nazis come for her... She's a storyteller and a damned good one. Her music videos are events. No one can tell me she's a bad actress.. She's been in some bad films and made some restrictive character choices but that presence, that spark, thst natural affinity with the camera is always there. She was a massive threat and wldnt play the game their way.. So learned to work with like minded people.
    She often used to shoot videos together.. same time, set, cast etc.(time and money saved and just logistics) so some studio shots etc, shot same time.. just styled/lit/coloured differently..

    I think she can act but it needs to be the right part. The best acting i've seen from her was in Snake Eyes and obviously she won the Golden Globe for Evita in 1997.
    She got good acting in her videos, the most impressive was the Bad Girl video from 1993. You will be shook.
    Back to the 80s, this song and video is everything. Love her style with black white stripped shirt and leather jacket as well. Always here for her slightly rapsy ''Please'' in this song. This song will never get old.

Oh and yesssss I’m so glad you thought the same about the scary stairs!!😳I love how we see one of Madonna’s oldest friends Debi Mazar playing one of her friends in the video. Debi was working the lifts at the Danceteria when she first met Madonna and Madonna said to her “Do you wanna dance” and Debi was like “sure”... this led her to do the makeup for Madonna’s “Everybody” video and others and has starred in later Madonna videos. Still besties to this day! 🥰 I’m super excited for you to see “Open Your Heart”... I hope it will help the song grow more on you ☺️

    You can tell from how Madonna approaches her videos that she's good an inhabiting a character and embodying it as her art. She has trouble translating that to the big screen. I tend to think that she'd be better off in character parts rather than the leading lady vixen she always wants to play. She's hilarious on SNL. Wearing an orange top, you can see Madonna's friend, Debi Mazar. She's been in several of the music videos. She's been the most constant friend in Madonna's life.

    Ok, can someone provide the backstory and symbolism of M climbing all the different sets of stairs throughout the video? It’s very rhythmic and I suppose it represents some sort of pacing- either physical or mental (or both). Perhaps it’s symbolic of a journey of sorts? Also, I believe she is only shown climbing up stairs or “ascending.”

    • @meladonna
      @meladonna 3 года назад +2

      I don't know about the stairs, but I feel like the walk might represent her desire for independence. She's got the perfect, to-the-beat strut, right up until the end when she's approaching the door to her house. Then her footsteps don't match the music anymore, like the tough girl persona slips away and the little girl comes out when she gets home with Dad.

    • @Kaia6485
      @Kaia6485 3 года назад +2

      Also, like Empress pointed out, one of those stairs doesn't having a railing on the right side. It's like if she's climbing a dangerous "mountain" with no security. The journey through her situation is not easy but has to be done.
