Elliptical orbits explain the movements. A diagram is worth a lot of words but you are all spot on. A time table is essential for sailors as is the rule of twelfths. I recall that from my sailing exams. I suppose it is all online now. Never sailed round Blackpool though, looks a bit rough. Thanks all good.

    Great video!
The tidal bulge is kind of fixed in alignment with the moon. But as you say, there is a lag.
The Earth rotates below that bulge and the continents smash into the bulge causing drag.
The Iriish sea experiences some of the greatest tidal ranges in the world.
The Irish sea filling and emptying twice a day is resposible for more than its fair share of drag on Earths rotation.
Some of the drag is also geological.
Whatever the cause, the tidal interaction of the Earth/Moon system causes two things to happen.
Earth's rotation gradually slows so days get longer and the Moon absorbes that energy as orbital energy, a kind of sling shot, and slowly moves further away from Earth.
Some day it will be too far away for there to be any more total solar eclipses. The moon will always be too small, apparently, to fully cover thd Sun

Hi Stephen, I remember before they did the new seawall & headlands, the beach was much bigger then & the sea didn't come all the way in to the basalt wall at low tide. The ice cream men must have studied the tides each day, so they knew whether to park their vans on the beach or not. A simple mistake with the tides information could have left their vans submerged.

It's all to do with the temp of the earth ,in winter the earth gets colder and that's why the sea changes ,in summer things are much calmer when the sun is shining ,yes the moon does have something to do with the tides ,but the most important factor is the temp of the earth ,When I was an apprentice nuclear scientist ,I was involved in monitoring high and low tides ,
The reason there's no water on the sun is because it's too hot ,

Very interesting video Steve, thank you. I am very disappointed with myself for not getting down to see the high tide on Monday, the tide chart I use said it was going to be 10m, but I am very much a novice when it comes to tides. On Tuesday the chart said the tied was going to be 9.9m so I went down. The tide was very high and the sea wall was well covered with water, but because there was no wind, there was no waves except the ones at the Spanish Steps. A great big tree almost made it onto the sea wall at St Chad's but didn't quite make it, It drifted back out to sea. I didn't see any over topping like I have done on other occasions.

There are so many tide charts I don't know which is the best one but I picked one aimed at fishing hoping it's a good one to go by.
They get flood alerts at Cleveleys when the tide is very high. Cleveleys and St Anne's are two places I must go at high tide, and Gynn Square for a good bit of wave watching :)

I used to put nightlines out up around Bispham and further North, and carry my fish home on my Bicycle in the morning. Cod around the New Year can be massive. At this time of the year tides would move the lines a lot, or they'd be ripped up, never to be seen again, no matter how deep I'd buried my anchors.32ft is 9.75 metres by the way which brings it to the top of the steps in the roll back section of the wall at North Shore, making the narrow flat bit before the roll top a dangerous place to be for a game of dare, dashing between gateways during your School dinnertime break..
