- In 1308 Pope Gregory IX enlists the Dominicans to root out and destroy a sect know as the Cathars which renounce all the rituals of the Catholicism in favor of simple spiritualism. This simple faith had great appeal to illiterate villagers who had little understanding of the Roman Catholic Church they belonged to. Thus begins the Inquisition.

As Blaise Pascal said, "Men Never Do Evil So Completely And Cheerfully As When They Do It From Religious Conviction." 😢
Religion, or at least the Abrahamic ones, is actually the most evil thing in the world. It's ironic. When they claim to be wiping out sin, they are actually committing extreme sins, on behalf of a sinful organization.
Yes isnt.that tue profaine n barberic way Like Slavery in Africa They gave the Bible N Took the Land Yet TGod is not like that
I agree with you 💯!
I’m not justifying the atrocities people have committed in the name of their God, but the same applies to those that boast and find delight in the murder of others. This is a humanity problem not a religious thing. Human are not inherently good as people may think. They have to be taught to be good and civilized. The issue is that underneath it all there is a spirit of godawful and grim. People will betray, lie, cheat, gossip, covet, even murder others, while walking around this earth very comfortable as if nothing happened. This is more evident with today’s society. Just think about it.
Kind of like the weirdos who forced everybody to wear a mask to get into grocery stores, or called for people to be arrested if they refused the "SHOT". I worry more about that type of religious like conviction. They have NO .oral authority.
This is corruption of the highest level using religion as a tool.
Also religion itself leads to the most horrific acts mankind inflicts on each other. It's tribalistic, archaic and barbaric.
And a misrepresentation of the relationship between Islam and Christianity at the time. If you pay reeeeal close attention they allude to the Christian and Muslim kingdoms being split up. And if you look south, the reason is is because Muslims had invaded from morocco and had been violent towards christians (and to an extent Jews) there was no peaceful multi cultrualism. This invasion of muslims into europe is what provoked the crusades.

The Inquisition was not only Spanish. It was Catholic, wherever the Roman Catholic Church was the religion, there was inquisition. It was all over, Britain, Portugal, France, Italy, Germany, Holland, etc not just in Spain.
It was also an instrument that the Pope used to manipulate monarchs, and population all over Europe.
It was around before the 15 th century and officially ended in the 19th Century.
In the USA, puritans burned women and children in Salem in the 17th Century.

The Inquisition had jurisdiction only over Christians. It had no power to investigate, prosecute, or convict Jews, Muslims, or any open member of other religions. Anyone who was known to identify as either Jew or Muslim was outside of Inquisitorial jurisdiction and could be tried only by the King. All the inquisition could do in some of those cases was to deport the individual according to the King's law, but usually, even that had to go through a civil tribunal. The Inquisition had the authority to try only those who self-identified as Christians (initially for taxation purposes, later to avoid deportation as well) while practicing another religion de facto. Even those were treated as Christians. If they confessed or identified not as "judeizantes" but as fully practicing Jews, they fell back into the previously explained category and could not be targeted, although they would have pleaded guilty to previously lying about being Christian
I agree. And despite all of that , there are many that still believe it!

Just wanted to point out that officially, the Catholic Church did not close the office of the inquisition until the 20th century, shortly before the Holocaust… Also, Jews still had to wear clothing depicting their faith in the Papal States until 1890, people think the hats and robes used to shame Jews and set them apart was a product of a different time, when in fact it was very much a modern feature, as well.
They never abolished the Inquisition. The Dicastry for the Doctrine of Faith is the Inquisition. It is a department of the Roman Curia.
Truth + NON-Catholic Believers were persecuted BEFORE the 1400s.
Same goal. Different tactics now.
Wasn't Jesus, and the majority of original followers of Jesus, Jews??
Aside from egos, this anti-human behavior is illogical.

Yes he was. But when the Roman empire took a hold of Christianity, it became a religion of the powerful. So it no longer stood for what was intended to.

I maybe wrong but didn’t Elizabeth first chase off the inquisition when the Armada tried to invade England
Dick.. The inquisition was in Spain.
Duh.
The Inquisition had been in England for a couple centuries before he took the throne. He was an ardent supporter of the Church. The Pope didn't bestow the title Defender of the Faith for nothing. When he broke with Rome he simply replaced the Catholic Inquisition with a Protestant one.
Henry VIII provides More PROOF ~ Being an ardent supporter of
“the church” does NOT equal
Being a follower of Christ.
No matter how powerful and controlling a system may be ; no matter how they use fear to control the masses ... not everyone can be controlled ; not everyone fears power.
Critical-thinking has always existed among the people ; if not critical-thinking, surely common-sense❕️
There were people before the Inquisition who were living "off the grid". They could see the religious leaders/leadership enriching themselves and controlling the countrysides and poor villagers.
These free-thinkers decided to leave the church and find something that was truly "spiritual" ; not part of any organized religion. They were not even afraid of "blasphemy".
There were so many people leaving the church that it was only a matter of time that church authorities noticed and, of course, sent spies throughout the countryside.
Many of these "heretics" even had names of their groups to separate themselves from the churches, no matter what the religion (many with German names).
This new threat to the power of the church and the daring expression of individuality had to be stopped before it spread like a fire throughout the churches' financial/land holdings and millions of people under the Pope's authority.
They found a way ... the Inquisition to scare people back in line.
People were brutally tortured. The machinery used for the job was invented and upgraded with each passing generation. Manuals were produced with drawings of the machinery and how to use the machines for maximum pain-inducing results. Those manuals still exist. Many have been reprinted in the 20th century.
As the Inquisition gained a thrusting propulsion ; the news of this horrific practice by the Pope and his priests terrified the people who simply wanted to live.
As usual, when something like the Inquisition is implemented, it takes on tentacles and bonacles almost without human architects.
Once someone (s) were un-alived by the Inquisitors, their land and wealth were confiscated by the church authorities ; of course, peasants didn't have to worry about their wealth. Being rich was conspicuous for other reasons. The wealthy had to remain subservient and generous to the Pope (s).
I've read a number of books about the crimes of the Inquisition, an Inquisition that lasted for hundreds of years and spread throughout the known world, including the Western Hemisphere. One book was very complete with gruesome details. I couldn't finish reading it.
One thing is certain ::
A writer from the 20th century gave a superficial account of those German organizations of common people who developed spiritual communities ...
She wrote ::
_Just as these groups were coming into existence, the Inquisition started._
_That's all she wrote_ as if she was unable or unwilling to make a correlation between these two historical events.
Cruel as it was: they were the people of their time... and paid for it with their lives. This is one of many examples when the Scriptures are withheld from the comon people and left to the interpretation of the Church of the day. The Catholic Church and the rulers of the day.
@@MrMonikura :: You made some very good points ! It never seems to change ; however, keeping the masses ignorant has always been a priority, only the methods change.

@@JalalDin-bb6qe The facts of Islamic history speak otherwise.
It was when Iberia allowed those tolerant Jews in - the Visigoth Empire was destroyed!
@@JalalDin-bb6qe Two points of contention; the first regarding tolerance and the second regarding the Renaissance.
The first, is a lie or at best a misrepresentation. The fact about how Muslims in Spain treated non Muslims living within Muslim controlled areas was very nuanced. Too much documentation pointing otherwise...and from Muslim scholars as well. Read Sword and the Scimitar - Raymond Ibrahim.
The second is just a big fat lie rooted in anti-Western scholarship; similar to how the crusades recently were cast in an anti-Western light. Now, regarding the Renaissance, it occurred circa 1500-1600 shortly after the flowing back West of the remnants of the last Romans, bringing with them the knowledge that was preserved when the Western portion collapsed. Constantinople fell in (1453 AD) as did many traditional Western lands from Muslims invaders who had been pushing into Western lands since circa 630 AD. Again the Renaissance circa was 1500-1600.

How is this any different compared to what Islam did in its newly conquered regions? They are the ones who eradicated so many local religions like the ones in Egypt. Where is Zoroasterism today? Let's not make Islam a victim here.
So interesting, it was very nuanced and not the simplistic all good versus evil. One fact that caught my attention was the persecution of converts by the Inquisition, at that initial stage they weren't committing genocide but trying to keep the status quo of power of the church and the monarchy by maintaining what we would call in modern times as a sort of "apartheid" in which Christians (defined ethnically) hold the power and Muslims and Jews live in hierarchical interiority, no different that previously under Muslim rule it was the Jews and Christians paying the infidel tax (Jizia). So previously to establish the increasing recovery of the Christian power in territories prior and leading to the Reconquista, the Christian monarchy still growing, mandated conversion in order to take the wealth of the Jews and Muslims, but this barely made any difference as many didn't care to change religion not only to keep power and possession but to survive, and many would keep their traditions in secret. That's why the Inquisition was born, as a new rule for those conversos only, the new Christians, and this time it worked because the violence and law didn't leave them any way out. So the church and state took everything from them and decimated them. It was only later that it got progressively worse to the point of total expulsion and persecution. Then to add insult to injury fate showed the fallacy of divine justice by rewarding those evil people by giving them the discovery of America, where they applied full force their well established racism to exterminate, pillage and enslave in the name of God. One thing led to another and their enemies didn't oppose their heinous savagery, the English only felt left out of the spoils and created their own empire with slaves and all of their own

Exactly no matter how hard they try truth is always vivid
Whatever keeps those Muslims out..
This sounds a lot like how Salem witch trials escalated. Forcing neighbors to turn on neighbors. Humans, we're a real piece of work lol
Witch Hunts were horrific BUT number of victims + amount of time persecution lasted ~

Present day Mexico too.
