Anima and Animus - Eternal Partners from the Unconscious

  • The anima and animus are two contrasexual archetypes crucial for individuation and to progress towards the Self in Carl Jung’s analytical psychology, they are the archetype of life and archetype of meaning, respectively.
The anima is the personification of all female psychological tendencies in man, while the animus is the personification of all male psychological tendencies in woman. They form part of the collective unconscious, as archetypes or collectively inherited patterns of behaviour, which are autonomous, making them particularly difficult to integrate into one’s personality.
The integration of the shadow, or the realisation of the personal unconscious, marks the first stage in Jungian psychology. Without it, a recognition of anima and animus is impossible. Shadow integration is the ‘apprentice-piece’, while the anima or animus is the ‘master-piece’.

The children a woman bears resemble the man who loves her. If her husband loves her, then they resemble her husband. If it is an adulterer, then they resemble the adulterer. Frequently, if a woman sleeps with her husband out of necessity, while her heart is with the adulterer with whim she usually has intercourse, the child she will bear is born resembling the adulterer. Now you who live together with the Son of God, love not the world, but love the Lord, in order that those you will bring forth may not resemble the world, but may resemble the Lord.

5:42 The anima is the archetype of life and when it is negative, the impulse is to dream about life and to make wishful fantasies about life, instead of living life. It is as if a vampire is sucking one’s blood, the blood being our life activity. Such people sink into passivity, feel constantly tired and do not want to do anything, one wakes up depressed and nothing means anything.

@@1GreatLake ok. I have watched the video 3 times. The solution is, you have to integrate your shadow (unconscious) with your conscious mind. If you are a male then your anima is part of your shadow. If you are a female then animus is part of your shadow. Integrate your anima/ animus to your conscious mind and become whole. How to become whole.? As carl jung explained "through the process of individuation", you can become whole. You must integrate your unconscious mind with your conscious mind or in other words, you have to bring your unconscious (shadow) to the conscious.

Psychological phenomena are not reducible to biological processes and somehow divorced from phenomena as human beings experience it. Trust me, I know. There is tremendous prejudice and countless presuppositions from Academia. Why is the outdated sexual theory of Freud's accepted, reducing all psychic activity to sexual fantasy? Simply because it fits in with Academia's reliance on materialist/immanentist/secular assumptions. Anything that takes the immaterial seriously and questions the Intellectual assumptions of scholars will be considered dangerous. And I don't disagree with them with regard to danger. the discussion on anima hit close to home.
my mother and i had always had a difficult relationship, with the last year or so being the most challenging and resulted in me choosing to no longer stay in contact with her. i grew up without a father and had to take the brunt of her volatile behavior, was filling me with uncertainty and a depressive outlook on the world; irritable towards other and insecure with myself (i’ve gotten much better on the insecurity, still have some trouble with the others). we constantly fought and it felt like i was never able to fully express myself to her or have a healthy relationship with her, specifically due to her choosing her romantic interests over me. this caused me to retreat into my psyche and create worlds for myself to explore so that i wouldn’t have to face this reality, as well as get into reading philosophy and studying psychology + comparative politics at university to study systems and theory as well as have an understanding of the human mind. nowadays i’m an extremely private and introverted individual, with my inner world always functioning.
reading through other comments, it’s bizarre how many other people who experienced similar situations have the same mental outcomes from a negative mother-child relationship. for me personally, detaching myself from her was the best decision i could’ve made and not having either parent in my life has only brought me peace and feels like the beginning of a new era in my life; truly like reaching the top of a mountain and gazing upon the scenery of the world. i’m not sure if anyone else has gone through this situation and has felt the same way, but my main point is that you don’t have to let your past define your present. i feel like a new being and more free than ever before after letting go of the negativity that had plagued my life for so long.
these videos are so thought provoking, love that i get to spend my nights watching these and ponder on the concepts of human reality + philosophy.
edits: any language that portrayed that i was saying these experiences are only experienced by males and/or sons; more gender-neutral language- this experience is not confined to males and/or sons exclusively; while most (if not all) Jungian psychology is based of the concept of binaries and dichotomies, my perception of these “energies” is that the archetypes presented in much of Jungian psychology are much more an attempt to classify the conscious and unconscious into 2 opposing ends of a tug-of-war between energies that exist within all of us, rather than categorize them between innate characteristics of males/men and/or females/women.

    A poetic interpretation-
If I feel my mother’s eyes,
    Burn into my brain,
The pain and fear and loathing,
    Comes back again, again...
But if I look through her eyes,
    While knowing that I’m me,
    How much power is there,
    To set this person free...
    Remembered fear and pain,
Of the one we need to love,
    From the womb to adolescence,
    Disconnected push and shove...
    In the shadow of awareness,
    We find the archetypal entity,
    Subtle twists of the subconscious,
    Opposing sexuality...
    The stranger in the shadows,
Seeks oneness with what we are,
Can we walk as one together?
Or do we fight to be apart?
Can our psyche host a twin?
    A mirrored version of ourselves?
    In perfect opposition,
    Can the mind’s unconscious meld?
    Created in our own image,
    The anima and animus,
    In conflict is damnation,
    In acceptance finding peace...

I just saw the upload date of this video... last Monday (three days after this video was uploaded) I felt the need to gather more insights into my own anima situation so at the start of my workday I put in my earplugs and searched for a video about the anima; this was the first video I found. it told me exactly what I needed to know and I had to put it on repeat. My entire workday I listened to nothing else but this video. the in the evening I received a message from a friend of mine who is very similar to me in many ways who out of nowhere asked me about a dream I had a couple of years ago in which I believe I saw my anima. We started talking and sharing and comparing insights and made a great deal of progress as a result.
So thank you for this video. it has already been of great value for me!

Having recently read Jing’s autobiography, I was impressed by his dedication and insight. I drew many parallels in his thinking and my own, introspective and searching for practical answers to being at odds with the world and its contents. Jung is the first psychologist (or philosopher) to answer these questions for me and is work has become extremely valuable. He has helped me to also accept religious philosophies although I endeavour to remain independent of any one doctrine thus far. It’s been suggested to me that one can best return to one’s origin for religious systems and follow a spiral ascent following. Much more to learn, but Jung’s work will be a foundation as it aligns with other therapeutic methods I’ve discovered with the “inner child” as well. Thank you for this content.

The content's good, but what would improve these videos are longer pauses, especially for paragraph breaks.
If you listen to any great narrator (analyse a Robert Hughes art documentary, say), the secret to their speech being so pleasant to listen to and digestible are the silences.
Verbal punctuation is important. If Audio editing results in one giant paragraph with no spaces for breath, it becomes as hard to listen to as an unbroken slab of text is to read.

The example of a sea captain going down with his ship at about the 9:20 mark as part of a dark relationship to the Animus; is grossly misplaced. I was in the US Navy and while on watch I lost the clip to my handgun. Under Article 108 of the UCMJ the captain took 300 dollars from my pay and sent me to three days in the lockup. Besides this obvious loss on my part he did not mince words telling me how serious Property loss was to the Navy. I can't fathom what they would do to a Captain returning without his ship. My lost clip was worth about 30 dollars a lost ship is worth millions.

I get what you're talking about, when put into financial terms, this is really apples and oranges. But it might be a mistake to look at it in financial terms, as it's not really about money, but about what the ship symbolises in the relationship of you to your own Self. Try not to think about the money part, because when we die, money no longer matters, but this stuff will matter well beyond after our death. Thank you for your service to our country.

21:07: When I decided to take Shadow work journey on a deeper level, I had a dream in which Shadow WARNED me. "She" said she would silently destroy all the relationships that I have. I remembered I told her (in my dream) that I would be patient, very patiently observing her. She won't be able to compare with me in terms of calmness and patience. @@she_wizzdom4410 Hello, I've taken a few days to think about my response to you because I want to provide the most truthful and comprehensive answer I can. I have been engaging in shadow work through 3 tools:
      1. Tracking moments when I lose control (Triggers journal).
      2. Paying attention to the characteristics of people I dislike, find annoying, or feel aversion towards (they may be projecting my own shadows).
      3. Keeping a dream diary as much as possible.
Numbers 1 and 2 are how I work to outline the behaviors of my shadows, while number 3 is how I identify their portraits in my unconscious mind.
Within this, I believe the dream journal is an incredibly useful and valuable tool in identifying and engaging with the shadows.
Some formulas I use when analyzing dreams:
      - ALL the characters appearing in a dream will only reflect different aspects of ourselves. Our shadows often appear as a fearful, fierce, or dangerous character (usually the same gender as ourselves).
      - Pay attention to your emotions in the dream. Remember and take note the words exchanged by the characters.
      - If you like, you can actively engage in imaginative exercises to interact with the characters. Sometimes they will send you messages back (as in my previous comment).

In my readings, currently, i really bring this up and go deep in your shadows Psyche Mother/Father Sun/Moon Mars/Venus Solstice/Equinox Know thy Cross.. For a man MOON/VENUS is your unconscious feminine side, your AnimA and for a Woman SUN/MARS is your unconscious masculine, your AnimUs... The anima and animus are described in Carl Jung's school of analytical psychology as part of his theory of the collective unconscious. Jung described the animus as the unconscious masculine side of a woman, and the anima as the unconscious feminine side of a man, each transcending the personal psyche.

"Don't know where to start." My advice? Start. People interested in things like the content in this video often feel the need to "know" before they dive into their fears and anxieties, to grab ahold of life. However, illuminating wisdom often only comes to you once you start the journey.

    • @chronic_daydreamer
      @chronic_daydreamer 6 месяцев назад

@@noahhysi8622 I don’t think you understand that I don’t know where or HOW to start. I have literally no idea what I’m doing. It’s like putting a toddler in a car and expecting them to know how to drive. They wouldn’t even know how to start it. I’m autistic and reality overwhelms me constantly. I simply don’t know what to do. Telling me to just start is awful advice. Might as well be telling a fish to “just try” to climb a tree.

    • @noahhysi8622
      @noahhysi8622 6 месяцев назад

Maybe it was a little too vague. Nobody can clearly understand their direction, but you can begin by starting with the things you know you're doing wrong, and giving yourself the structure necessary to have a stable life. Picking apart your own psychology often leaves people paralyzed, and it gives them the false idea that once they fix everything "internally," they'll be ready to step out into life. The reality is that things evolve and change once you start acting out a plan even if you're anxious or scared and don't know what the future looks like. You also appear to have some really limiting beliefs about yourself and your abilities, comparing getting your life going to a fish climbing a tree. This is what overthinking about oneself does. It stops becoming that this or that is an obstacle, and starts becoming, "my mind is an obstacle, and I have to resolve all of this negativity and fear and then begin." This won't work - it's neurosis. Stable people have external responsibilities and aren't obsessed with their internal state or "resolving" anything. I hope that's a little clearer.@@chronic_daydreamer

I was once locked in a state of paralyzing anxiety and depression for upwards of three years. I could feel my own thoughts destroying me from the inside out. I wasted so much time doing nothing, and it was insane. There were many reasons I could blame my state on my environment or childhood, but instead of doing all I could to suppress the fear of life and get rid of anxiety, instead of thinking and thinking about my trauma and my mind and my complexes, I gave myself direction for my outer life and tried little things. It turns out that directly trying to rid yourself of your demons will make them worse - you have to confront them. Just running a little every day, or cooking, or reading, or taking care of a little part of your responsibilities, it takes you out of the mental stupor.@@chronic_daydreamer

I’m always expected to just understand. Even when I ask for help, it never seems to be enough because I always mess it all up. I’m at a point in my life now where I can’t deal with responsibilities. My father left at age 12 and my mother became depressed, volatile, turbulent, and domineering.
My relationship with her has been defined by irritability, mood swings, and distance on my end, and a simultaneous destructive judgementalism and a fear of abandonment on her end. It has been over a decade since and we are trying to be healthier in our relationship.
I do escape into the intellect, such as by reading - but I do enjoy discussing these things with my mother. However, I am an extremely distant person now, extremely private, and only my inner world has been constantly active and alive. I have been capable of sustained work and I can achieve highly in school, but I have not made anything of it yet. I am a very attractive person, but I have no romantic interest because I feel too messed up as a person to actively pursue anything. Truly, I am anima possessed in romance because it has always been my partners that pursued me.
I am not yet 30 and have not given up, but it is indeed very canny how well Jung can describe this.

I'm in much the same spot, slightly different childhood circumstances but nearly the same in life as yourself. That description given of a man isolated, withdrawn into his own mind thanks to the poor relationship with his mother hits uncomfortably close to home. Gonna do some serious reflecting thanks to this video. I'm sure there's plenty other men in the same situation, hopefully we can all arrive at a level of self actualization that enables us to be who we truly should be and not stay completely cloistered, watching life pass us by.

But we get along well fir the most part. And I’m breaking those cycles with the love and principles I teach them everyday!

I had(and still have cuz I had it from childhood till the end of teenage) a negative image of my mother and I can relate to the self loathing, absurd mentality and living within my own inner world, being afraid of being real life decisions cuz they seem too real and threatening to my state. But was aware that I shouldn't be in this state, yet can't get out of it. Then I realised how my mother had to endure abuse and trauma from her father(I had to endure from my mother) as my mother's father left their family at a very young age and made another wife.
It's too much burden to carry. I'm planning on for therapy to not continue this way.
    Thanks for the video.

I've been journaling for 6 years and for the last 2 years I've been constantly writing 2-3 times everyday. It's no use. But somehow I already thought of writing about my fantasies and it helped me to grow out of it. I like the movie Stalker (by Tarkovsky) on how it handles the skepticism about belief, I can relate myself to the stalker in the movie who questions why people don't believe in anything anymore.
And commenting on RUclips helps too.
I'm not actually willing to go for therapy, but I guess I can think about it. All I want right now is to write about my 'things' and settle them.

I once did a really intense Meditation outside, with breathing techniques, movement and afterwards sitting quietly, opening my Heart to myself. And i have meet “Eva” its was a really beautiful experience. It felt like being seduced by the Earth, letting me fall in Love with this Planet. She invited me into garden eden. Since she is a active part of myself, always reminding me that we are already here. This Planet is paradise, is garden eden. We just need to let be seduced and eat the apples of wisdom. Think it’s interesting how much the anima and animus concepts have in common with Indian mysticism, specifically the concepts of Shakti and Shiva. I’m not talking about the actually gods, but rather the concepts they represent. Shakti is seen as the divine feminine energy, it’s seen as chaos. Someone that understands their inner shakti is filled with a love of life a need to explore and a level of natural intimacy with the world. Shiva represents order, the ever present watchfulness that exist within all. It is always observant and always silent. It’s gaze always non judgement, always accepting.
Just thought it was interesting how well the anima animus ties to it. And it’s a weird bit of human intuition where we almost always have throughout history described feminine energy as chaotic and masculine energy as orderly.

The only definitive in life is birth Andrea death. All that happens
in between is a completely complex mixture of “ the opposites attempt
at unification “. Anima , animus , good and evil , black and white , and on
and on and on. We go through life , for the most part, totally ignorant of
what is happening within and without. Oh , the genius of Carl G. Jung !
