- Big day for Xiao Qi Ji! He's on the move!
Here's what led up to the momentous event! Around 1:20pm the camera switched from Xiao Qi Ji (who was resting in the den doorway) to the outdoor cams. When it was switched back indoors, Qi Ji was alone in Room 3 on the floor ~ how he got here? We don't know! Then Mei Xiang comes back from lunch and finds him there ... no audio in the beginning, but you can tell by Qi Ji's body language that he barked ... at a reflection of himself or Mei's cold nose? Mei must have been satisfied with him being there, as she walked off and ate bamboo. After quite awhile, he's on the move, but he disappeared from Room 3's camera. Next thing you know you see his reflection in the window ... and he shows up on the den cam as he scoots along to the den.
I'm pretty sure that he took some stumbley STEPS once he was in the den! And you'll see him mouthing bamboo as well as trying to play with the bars in the den. Watch out Mei Xiang!

As I watch with a huge smile on my face and tears rolling down my face, this little guy has brought so much joy in the most of so much turmoil. God Bless little angel. 🙏💗🐼

FUN FACT:
According to the National Zological Society, Giant Pandas love the taste of heavy metals like iron and copper, but it is unknown exactly why. Notice our little boy licking the bars of the den.
Anyway, so proud of him for reaching the "Can put myself to bed" milestone!!
Am no scientist, but since panda diet is mostly bamboo which doesn't contain minerals like iron (humans get iron supplements if deficient), then maybe they find it tasty if they stumble on some metals in their forays. I wonder if they suffer from toxicity of too much metals.
Whatever the reason, I just want to say to him, "Don't put your mouth on that!" Go and play outside (the den). LOL!

Our sweet little miracle is mobile! This sweet little baby panda has made my day! I bet he will sleep tonight after that effort. Momma put him close enough to see the den but far enough away that he had to work a bit to get there! So sweet and wonderful to see. So proud of him!

Clever one quietly goes back to the den, tries out the railings as a teething ring, and gets up on his legs....smart instincts and very cute.

Yes. The little thing took his first steps yesterday. Soon enough he'll be walking, runing and rolling all over the place. I can't wait!!!
Has anyone else found themselves cheering him when he gains enough momentum to roll himself up and asking questions like "Where are you going, little guy?" when he starts wondering off? Or is it just me having a one-sided conversation with Xiao Qi Ji?

A few days ago I thought I noticed Xiao Qi Ji stand on all fours. My first reaction when I saw him in room 2 I thought maybe the panda keepers had brought him to that room. I also saw him near the glass of that room it seemed like he was seeing his reflection. He is really smart & has an excellent teacher with Mei Xiang

Well, well... this is truly an exciting event for QJ!! Last night I thought there were some steps. Today he has started to toddling. Amazing how fast he went even if it was over a period of time. Some of those are definitely.steps, not scoots. I think the fascination with the bars is because he's teething. Somebody needs to make panda size teething rings and nonslip baby panda shoes.
It kind of reminded me of our first daughter learning to walk. She went everywhere if she could hold on but we were still surprised at how young she actually walked. She was just barely nine months old and later her baby sister walked at 8 1/2 months.
It just happened that her Daddy and I were in the living room when she walked. She saw something she wanted and took off. She toddler about 8 feet before she realized she was in the middle of the room and sat down fussing. For a couple of weeks she walked loads but only holding on to something, mostly an empty diaper box not attached to anything. This went on until she wanted something that required both hands to pick up, dropped the diaper box, stood up and kept walking. The diaper box crutch only lasted a day or two after that.

Precious Little Miracle is getting around pretty well now. I'll be happy when his hind legs are strong enough to walk. He is really growing and seems to get more independent each video. He is so curious. Little Miracle and mama Mei are just darlings.

So cute around 3:20 when he was stuck at the wall between room 3 and the den and eventually figured out that he could get around it rather than through. I hope you saw him and Mei together in the den about an hour ago (8:00pm EST) when he did some more walking. It seemed like she she was helping him - he would walk a few steps with her watching, and then she'd pull him back towards her so he could do it again.
I'll have to check what I've recorded. We were having internet issues on and off this afternoon, so I did lose some! Love seeing the progress he's making ~ it's like overnight something clicked!
Soon the little miracle will be running the place 🐼💖
