I’m so glad I bought my Sailrite LSZ1. Received it a few weeks ago been practicing with it, has not let me down. Sailrite is one great company! If you thinking about buying one just do it, you will not be disappointed. Right now I’m practicing sewing some piping on a practice motorcycle seat cover that I just made pleats on. Works like a champ!!
It has been a few years since I had done any upholstery sewing and I just completed a huge project for friend by covering a split bay window cushion. The front edge was about 11 ft long and I installed piping on the top plate and I had to match the stripes in the fabric where the two cushions met in the middle. I would never have had the confidence to tackle this project without watching the videos on your website. Thank you for your help and, if I might say so myself, it turned out great! The family I did this for loves it and now in their eyes I'm the best thing since sliced bread. This was a barter for my sewing desk extension that Alan built and installed for me. I did all the sewing on my vintage Bernina 930 Record and use the zipper foot for installing the piping. Because the material that they purchased raveled so heavily I surged the edges of all the completed seams in the hopes of keeping this cover together for many years. I also created a sort of ticking cover for underneath, that I hand stitched closed, which gave me the opportunity to work out any problem areas before working on The decorator fabric. Discover makes it much easier to remove the fashion fabric to wash it since they have three pups in their family. I had to create the piping by cutting the bias strips myself and the whole process of creating and installing the piping was my favorite part. When I'm ready to reupholster cushions on our lawn furniture I will definitely be shopping your site for fabric.
Thank you for such clear explanations and demonstrations too. Wonderful RUclips sent me this. How lucky am I. Now I need to find Part 1 by you because you are a natural superb teacher! Please keep teaching. Your teaching is so pleasant to hear & see!
it's good too see you take the time when sewing I thought i was a bad sewer when i went slow! thank you for showing me even a profession takes the time.
Oh how I wish my dad could have seen this video. He was a master upholster, he did most of his own machining. When it came to box cushions with piping he struggled with them being perfect. Thank you
Thank you for you video! I am a male that needs to learn how to do piping for a arm of a lounge chair. You were very helpful. Now I can surprise my wife to show her how clever I am!!!!!!!
What a fantastic tutorial! I was searching high and low how to do piping and came across your video! Thank you so much for sharing in such an articulate manner !
This was an awesome video. I never really knew how to finish off the piping and I just overlapped everything which as u know makes a mess. So it was very helpful to see how you finished this off. Good job and thanks.
You can trim back side afterwards. Also with pick you can get in between stitches and make shape of pillow or whatever look crisp after it's installed. Tricks of trade are very helpful. Remember slower you go nicer job looks. Speed comes with time
Thank you. I’ve sewn all my life (60 years of sewing) and have never been able to make a boxed side pillow like that. The side always gets away from me! Now I feel confident!
We'll its about bloody time a man sewing. That's right been can sew to. thank u for this video. I am a beginner I got my first sewing machine last month. I can't wait to use it. but b4i do I am doing research. I all so have tooling leather projects going on as well as gardening. well Thk u very much.
Great video ....im sat here thinking do i leave my bench ( bespoke garden furniture i make ) seats wooden or add faux leather cusions ....this video helped me decide ...sooutwith the sewing machine it is then :)
Thanks for the positive comment. You can find the cost of the Sailrite Ultrafeed Sewing Machine here: www.sailrite.com/Sewing-Machines/Portable-Heavy-Duty-Sewing-Machines
I want to learn sewing/tayloring from the scatch which application will provide me with full details on the subject? Is ther any recommendation of sewing book?
so you sew the piping first to the face of the main piece with the tail out and then sew the reverse side of the boxing to the piping again and this goes thru the face piece also so there are two rows of stitches thru the piping , then when you turn it out the boxing flips over the piping exposing it and you are done , sound right ? second question, when making a pattern to do this type of cushion you would add the amount to the piece over what the cushion form size would be, say 3/4 on each side bigger to allow for the seam and then sew on the line for the actual size of the cushion ?. say a 4 ft by 4 ft cushion sew on the exact 4 ft marks also thanks for these videos , im working on some new cushions for my boat and as soon as I practice with some scraps here will be ordering material and piping etc.
+radioguy1620 Yes, you do so the piping on just as you explained. When it comes time to size your cushion's top and bottom plate we actually use this general guideline: Cut top and bottom plates to the pattern (desired size of cushion), plus ¼” all around. Doing this will result in the plates being smaller than the foam, but that actually looks best and keeps cushion covers tight. For more on this check out this video: www.sailrite.com/How-to-Make-Cockpit-Cushions-Box-Cushions-Video
I make my own piping and then usually staple it between the 2 plates and sew it all together. I don't sew the piping on to one plate first because you would be sewing it 3 times over one another , the foot just follows the cord every time. Is this something to concern yourself with?
I make cylindrical bags for a living, and when I sew the circle to the flat side I always have the circle on top as I have better control over the corner. Even though my circles are small (tennis ball size) I do not need to cut the edge of the flat fabric as it is effectively running a straight stitch, while the circle is turning out and so if anything its edge is being compressed- but that is not the case. On other projects sometimes having them the other way is unavoidable, and that is much harder.
Great, thanks. Side note: I pretty much run the LSZ-1 zipper foot when I do work on small pouches that have heavy fabric. I even ordered a second inside foot for it to grind off the edge and get tighter in so I wouldn't damage the original. It's great when I do machine covers, drapes, curtains, etc. I saw that on one of your videos as well and it made me think of all the upholsterers I see on RUclips who work with heavy fabrics in tight spaces. A lot of them have walking feet that are ground down and modified with only one side. Cechaflo seems to use that technique exclusively.

thanks that
is really clear video for me as a newbie in stiching machine
beautiful stuff love it.
Nice demo. I'm just getting ready to reupholster seats for a couch with piping and was wondering how to do it. Thanks.
Your welcome!
you make it look so easy! Can you use a zipper foot?
Yes, a zipper foot can be used to sew in piping.
so you sew the piping first to the face of the main piece with the tail out and then sew the reverse side of the boxing to the piping again and this goes thru the face piece also so there are two rows of stitches thru the piping , then when you turn it out the boxing flips over the piping exposing it and you are done , sound right ?
second question, when making a pattern to do this type of cushion you would add the amount to the piece over what the cushion form size would be, say 3/4 on each side bigger to allow for the seam and then sew on the line for the actual size of the cushion ?. say a 4 ft by 4 ft cushion sew on the exact 4 ft marks also thanks for these videos , im working on some new cushions for my boat and as soon as I practice with some scraps here will be ordering material and piping etc.
+radioguy1620 Yes, you do so the piping on just as you explained. Doing this will result in the plates being smaller than the foam, but that actually looks best and keeps cushion covers tight. Please where can I get the cord, thanks for the tutorial.
Wow thank you so much for sharing
So nice teachers thanks 🙏
Excellent instructional
thank you for sharing , good job.
Very nice! Precise.
Which piping foot are you using? Looks like this is on the Ultrafeed, but I don't see a cording foot that matches for that machine.
The cording foot comes built into the standard walking foot of the Sailrite Ultrafeed Sewing Machine.
Thanks for these instructions.
Pretty cool! Thanks!
I make my own piping and then usually staple it between the 2 plates and sew it all together. I don't sew the piping on to one plate first because you would be sewing it 3 times over one another , the foot just follows the cord every time. Is this something to concern yourself with?

Would you recommend this same technique for zipper plaques too? I am making some heavy duty pouches and the zipper goes across two corners.
Yes, I would.
Great, thanks. Side note: I pretty much run the LSZ-1 zipper foot when I do work on small pouches that have heavy fabric.
