Looks to me like the axial mounting of the chopper removes the need for gearbox to transfer the power across a right angle, will surely more efficient this way. Also the belt feed looks to smooth and even out the crop flow more than a conventional pickup header with auger does. Nice design.
I totally agree this design is genius in my opinion, we all know that every time you go through a gearbox or add a shaft you’re going to lose power/efficiency. I’ve said it before this needs to be made into a trailed version as well
Interesting machine but think a forage wagon will still be quicker and more efficient, from the time it's leaves the field to getting back will be where the forgave wagon has the edge as this machine seems to take a long time to fold up once it's loaded so add getting back in to work is to long for me. With a wagon it's lift the reel and go and again when back on the field drop the reel and go. Over the course of a day the time this matching takes to fold up and down might add up to a couple of loads lost to a conventional wagon.
Hi Will, the folding is done in 17 seconds so that is not really the case. When this video was filmed the camera drones battery died when the trailer was full and folding started, giving limited exposure - you can see the folding process better in this video: ruclips.net/video/FMhHTz1wiqA/видео.html . The forage harvester 1460R can be mounted on either a conventional Metsjö tipp wagon or hook lifter - hence various logistics chains are available to optimize according to situation
This looks like an awesome way to mechanize your forage harvest on a tight budget.
