The best part about Maddux pitching was that he could throw hard and didn’t. He lived between 82 and 88, but every once in a while he’d show hitters 92-94 on a 4 seam. They’d be shocked.
@@distantgalaxymusic1447 When he was drafted, it was because he could throw hard. He didn't get better until he realized location and deception are more important than just throwing hard.
@@markharbaugh4445 i remember hearing that Sutcliffe told him that he was doing it wrong. Quit throwing so hard and create movement. Quit trying to fool every batter, the Ump calls balls and strikes. Fool him. Force the hitters out of the zone and get ground balls. That’s when he started winning.
Fun fact, the ball Maddux threw here actually had a tear from the previous at bat. @@OtisMoto Great point. I saw him hit 93, so I know he had it in him. Even so, that sinker he threw that started in the left-handed batters box and moved back across the plate was truly nasty. To this day, I’ve only seen a few guys that could replicate that pitch - Doc Halladay, Kyle Hendricks, maybe Billy Swift.
@@OtisMoto For his time? Dude do your research, guys aren't throwing harder now, they just clock it coming out of the hand vs crossing home plate. Maddux would have been gunned 96-98 then
This is a great example for those people who asked why the umpire changes out the baseball every time it hits the ground. When you have someone as good as Greg maddux, and you add a large scuff to the side of the baseball, this is the magic that can happen.
In case anyone doesn’t know, that type of movement is very atypical, even for someone as great as Maddux. I just watched his interview with Pitching Ninja, and he confirmed the ball had a scuff on it which allowed for the enhanced movement on the 2 seam. This isn’t taking away Maddux’s normal 2 seam which no doubt had great movement too, but this pitch in particular was an outlier for a reason.
@@nofurtherwest3474This is a 2-seam fastball and Maddox's specialty pitch. His top speed would usually be 92mph for a fastball but what makes this pitch so disgusting is that the way it's thrown it cuts sharp and down, but not like a full curve. Maddox would usually strike left handed batters out with this because it looks like an outside pitch but cuts inside the zone and catches them looking. His 3000th strike out was using this pitch, catching the batter looking.
This is "atypical" because the ball was scuffed. I'll see if I can find the interview where Greg talked about the fact that the ball would be thrown out today.
Look at Maddux rookie year looked like he just stepped out of a Woodstock with that sweet stache and wiry as hell. The rest of his career he was built like a dad and was dominant. Always a cool dude.
According to Maddux there was a good sized scuff on the ball which allowed him to have this crazy movement. Alou eventually fouled off the ball to Madduxs chagrin.
News flash. That ball was scuffed badly from the play beforehand. Maddux even said it had a small hole in it. So yes, he had a great 2 seamer but this pitch wasn’t all GM.
Having Javier Lopez as his catcher came in very handy as well... The pitch shown here was what they would call a Javi Lopez "cutter." Javi was a master at "cutting" the ball with one of his buckles etc. before tossing it to the pitcher and knew Maddux's pitch grips/preferred sequences etc. well enough to know exactly where to place that cut for maximum effect on certain pitches. Especially his two seamer. Don't get me wrong, Maddux's stuff was masterful regardless of his catcher but if you go through old video of him pitching with and without Javi catching, that two seamer tended to have at least 4 extra inches of run (often more) with Javi behind the plate than without.
Just saw an interview with him on this particular pitch he said the batter before hit the shortstop and the ball was scuffed severely on one side and he knew how to use it. Impressive!
Just saw an interview with Greg and he explained that the balls would get scuffed up back then and he, like other pitchers, would use that it to his advantage. Harder to do these days because new balls are always being put into play.
The weird thing is, I remember when people would talk about Maddux, they would talk about him not having "good stuff", and I was always like wtf are people talking about.
They should be reusing some balls still instead of getting a new one after every pitch. It’s still far and very few but some people prior to 1920 still hit the ball even if the ball turned to the color brown with 1,000 scuff marks plus rips on it. Through this ball too is not as easy as Greg said in this 3-4 minute video. This sport like any other, you must have the best talent to get to this level and Greg is a Hall of Fame pitch. Tons of other pitchers at the same time as him had balls similarly to this one and they still could not pitch a pitch like this one.
I saw a podcast that we had in he said that before that batter the one before hit a grounder and thier was a a piece of the ball missing causing the high spin
He doesn't even look like he's throwing hard. He's head and shoulders are in batting practice mode, but the ball is in UFO land. Not even looking at the mitt, just watching to see the batter's reaction.
