  • The what moves you project / film
A story of dance and movement as a modality for self-expression and healing. This film asks the questions: what is dance for you & what moves you? Through a series of interviews and dances co-created, Chantal Myfawny embarks on a journey to discover the meaning of dance and the power it gives to many local dancers and artists. The project weaves many mediums together to create a series of artwork in the forms of film, photography, poetry, costuming, styling, set design, and improvisation that demonstrate the vulnerable and raw catharsis of movement.
This episodic series about dance will be released slowly over the next year, and with the final episode there will be a book released to share the documented memories, stories, and photos of the project
In this video, Dahlia and I collaborated to weave a story about resiliency, as we are strong through bitterness and heartbreak, we cannot be destroyed. This song by Miya Folick is a powerful one that instantly resonated with both of us. The word cockroach was once used by Canadians to describe my Portuguese family who were immigrants to Canada back in the 1970s. "Cockarocha" was a term hissed towards my family members, which my father turned into a nickname of endearment. Throughout my childhood, I was fascinated with bugs, nature, and spent most of my waking time outdoors. Despite growing up a tomboy, my blonde hair and thin appearance was mocked by my peers, perhaps out of jealousy and bitterness of those around me. In the 5th grade, my teacher Mr. R. told me in front of my whole gym class "Chantal, one day you'll learn, it's true that blondes have more fun". In this moment I didn't understand the innuendo but felt that it was deeply wrong. I had many moments like, such as in my first professional job in my early twenties, I was called "Barbie, sexy, and pretty pink lady" and was assaulted by an older female co-worker who enjoyed pinching my behind at any chance she got. I embraced the name Barbie, Pink Lady, and all the other names, and took my power back. I always stood up for myself, even when I was alone, and I am an advocate for those who may not have the strength to fight. Time and time again, I have proven myself unable to be destroyed. You can call me a cockroach, but you can never k!ll me.
