I lived in Jaywick in the early 1990s. Loved the community. True we were all broke but whoever needed a few pence for that 10p tin of baked beans would get it from a neighbour who had a few pence over until the next pay day. We all pulled together to survive whatever came our way. Never encountered another community like it before or since. I would say it should be kniwn as the BEST community in Britian, not the most “deprived”. The only thing we lacked was money ! !
I’ve never seen the footage before but it was wonderful to see it. My youngest brother and baby sister in the pram. The chalet hasn’t changed much, a bathroom added and the veranda has gone or been enclosed.
Thanks Matthew you've brought back some wonderful memories. I stayed there many times with my mum and dad and 3 sisters, great fun . Many thanks for posting x
I used to have a friend with a holiday home there in the sixties. Their main home was a big mansion in Essex so I suppose it must have been quite posh then.
@@knowitall3503 Yeah agreed, it's a shame in a way but holiday chalets from the 1930s cannot support modern living. They should leave some as a historical reference though, would be a shame to lose them all.
Fascinating. The sea defenses are similar to so much else on that coast. I really enjoyed the music track. It would have been s bit twee with period sounds. You have really enhanced the whole piece.
Those kids would all be retired, now. Happy memories as a kid at Sacketts Grove Campsite. Sadly only one solution for Jaywick ... bulldoze it, fix the sea defences and re-build.
My nanna lives in jaywick when I was about 4/5 so about 47/48 years ago 1970s. Does anyone remember the lady who had the whole front garden made of shells collected on the beach.
Hi Matthew, am I allowed to use some of the footage from this video for a university documentary I’m currently making? Full credit will be given if so. Cheers, Elliott
Hi Elliott, that's no problem, as long as not for commercial use, if you can link back to the original video, or matthewgreasley.co.uk where possible, that would be great...
Great times...look how carefree those teens looked.60s--70s great time to be young....we took it all for granted.
and along came the smackheads and benefit tramps

Great to hear your recollections. A good community is special when you find it!
Love this, jaywick can be found again
I would live there today! Fishing my spouse disabled and bring and build a better community
why did you leave?
My brother is the little boy, we lived in that bungalow. Rosemary Avenue
Excellent! Have you seen the footage before?
Nice one STELLA 💯💓🇬🇧
LOVE FROM LONDON 😍🇬🇧🙏
No, it was wonderful to see it. Lived there for over ten years. 🙂
What is it like now?
Hardly any changes at all! Dots the newsagent at the end of the road is still there. Bought my sweets there 42 years ago! Incredible
Wow everybody was smart dressed and white

I like the look of it. People were slim, fit, smiling. Families together. Happy to be British, happy with their lives. How refreshing.
Such a lovely moment for them all
I live just a few miles from where this was filmed.....Great stuff.....good memories of that time.
Amazing.....I wish I had that footage of how things once were!
You have it here, come back whenever you like!

Oh wow! It was beautiful
0:25 The potholes were there already in the 60's!
Let's get jaywick back to its beauty
Yes , by demolishing the whole dump and redeveloping it in a practical manner.

Hard to think tha all these happy smiling faces have now passed over... and how smart the chalets looked... where did we go wrong ?
You came along , that's where the world went wrong . And you know it 😡

Gosh..they used to build sea walls in 62…
They built them in 1862 too!
Gladis lived there two
Love the music. Very good. Do you have a link to more of your music?
Thanks, you can listen to a whole bunch of stuff here - matthewgreasley.co.uk/
Very happy good people.
They must have been well off having a second home back then.

I guess back then you were lucky to have a holiday home in Jaywick.
The music does not reflect the film..
It was our permanent home for over ten years
@@stellaroberts8847 Did you like it there ?
I’ll bet they didn’t pay £1,000 for that registration plate…they knew the value of money then..they got the chalet for a thousand ..
Flatten it and start again. 5 dozers, 5 days. Sorted. They had standards then and little drugs...
Yep! You can't do anything with those existing tiny lots.
Yes, only had a couple of wars in the good old days that killed a few people. Take the rose tinted glasses off.
Surely they all didn't get out of that tiny car.

Thanks for watching!
There's a distinct and reprehensible lack of diversity in this video. This is unacceptable in 2024.
Can it please be re-edited to correct the problem.
The worst music to accompany this ....absolute garbage
