How to Make Deep Mulch for a No-Till, Ruth Stout (type) Garden 7-8-2020

  • How we made our deep mulch, no-till, Ruth Stout style garden. We used whatever kind of leaves that fall in the yard. We used wood chips from local tree services. We used all the grass we mowed and we used old hay we got from a neighbor.
We did not till any of it into the garden. We spread it out between 4 and 10 inches deep across the entire garden. The mix was not measured in any way. We added what we had when we had it to wherever was thin.
To this day we continue to add to the mulch in the garden.
The 4 foot compost pile has shrunk down since the second turning.

I love Ruth Stout and have every book she wrote. Her ideas blew my mind and revolutionized my gardening life. I don't do much anymore work with my garden. Lazy gardening is my kinda food production. The little critters under the soil fascinate me.

Thank you. I shreadded leaves last fall and dumped them into rows in the garden 2 days ago. Thanks to this video, I will add wood chips because they are much cheaper than straw bales, based on cost per square foot. I don't live close to any farms. But, I could probably get wood chips from tree trimmers, who have to pay to dump wood chips. I learned about leaf mulch from a friend who works at a cemetery, where they used it to re-seed new graves and get grass from seed within 2 weeks.

@@clydeboone6179 I started with all leaves around Dec. and had potatoes planted the end of Feb. However, that 1st summer was a real learning curve with all the other veg. I did see some improvement the 1st summer but the soil was not much improved until the next spring after adding more mulch thru the 1st year. The 2nd spring was great. No one gave me a time line when I started but now that you asked I think I need to do an episode just on that. Thank you for the question and for visiting my garden.

I live in the tropics where the normal seasons have no hold. All the nutrients leach out in a short time. You end up with a volcanic desert like the amazonian slash and burn. I have a half acre of a forest of ohia and eucyylyptus
I had always heard eucylyptus arent beneficial to other plant life. But the worms love it! Now i dont have to buy promix at 65$ a bale... and my worms are 6 inches long and over quarter inch thick. I might sell them as a side hustle. The eucy's are so messy i have free and sustainable soil in the desert. The garden needs so much less water too.

Looking at it just depressed me, there was so much to do I didn't know where to start. Enter the mulching method. Hi there! I found your channel a month or so ago and I want to do that too 😉 I have a garden established but my soil is dirt! I compost and supplement with cow manure but it doesn't make a huge difference. Like you I did a little research and love the idea of no till. I was digging beds in the spring. To get started for next spring, I added an inch of compost and leaves about a foot deep. I'm hoping to have substantial improvements in the spring. Do you think that's realistic expectations or will it take a few years? My only mulch is leaves. Thank you for the great ideas! I like how you put plants in any where it strikes you! I have "raised" beds right now (no boxes, just higher ground) but I may try filling in the paths with deep mulch. Thanks for any advice you can offer! Should I sign this
