I just finished watching all 7 seasons of the WW. It is without a doubt, the best written show I've ever watched in my 60 years. Yes, I'm late to the party, but so glad I came 20+ years later.

Meh it kind of went downhill after season 4 when sorkin left, still watchable after that, but definitely the writing wasn't as good.

ya,. you should definitely watch The Newsroom. It's also sorkin doing very well at writing. Very similar. And it's genuinely just really good.

Bradley Whitford's reaction is just amazing, I believe that for a show to be truly great the actors need genuine love for their co stars, the west wing had that massively

seoul588 I miss TWW every single day (Thank God for Netflix. :) ). I miss John Spencer just as much. That said, they REALLY couldn't have ended the show as well as they did because of John Spencer's very untimely death. The way TPTB (The Powers That Be... the writers, producers, etc.) took Spencer's death and just kinda ran with it on the fly (sort of) still boggles my mind to this day.
Did you know, up until Spencer passed away, TPTB were planning on having Santos lose the election? TPTB had originally written the ending in such a way that Vinick (played by the irreplaceable Alan Alda) was going to win the election. Spencer's death changed all of that, and the writers ended up having to do a major rewrite of some future scripts so that the show would end the way it eventually did (everybody knew, going into the first season, that TWW would only run for seven seasons). I read somewhere that the reason TPTB made the change to Santos winning the election was because TPTB didn't want to further depress the viewers by having Santos lose the election AND his friend, Leo, in one fell swoop.
      RIP, John Spencer. :(

I have never seen the tv show the west wing, but I have seen the late John Spencer in the movies the negotiator, and the rock. He was a good actor. May he rest in peace.

He passed away in December (2005) while they were still filming the 7th season. They literally re-wrote every episode from then on out. He was such a great actor and I miss him so much!! He really deserved this Emmy.

You should try watching it. You can stream it to your computer at Netflix, if you have an account. I'm just sayin'... I "get" that political dramas are not everybody's "thing".

You can tell by the way he smiles, and by the way everyone is happy for him (expecially Bradley Whitford) how a sweet man he has been. And, of course, he was an incredible actor.

They could still do it, at least in theory, but I REALLY wish that they'd done a spin-off of TWW and called it Chief Of Staff or something like that. I understand that Jimmy Smits didn't want to continue in the role of Matt Santos after TWW was done, but they could have written the spin-off in such a way where they focused on JOSH'S job as COS, and his relationship with Donna, where Whitford and Maloney were the two principal actors of the spin-off.

+storyofcory I have thought about this in several ways...a Republican version, one with Sam Seaborn as president, a show about all of these key staffers serve future administrations, etc...

Yes, there will never be an equal....the West Wing had the best ensemble cast ever, and without question some of the best writing, directing, producing and music ever. John Spencer was a class act in a cast filled with class acts. Nobody writes better for TV than Sorkin, and Snuffy Walden has been putting together great music for TV shows since back in his days working on Thirtysomething; his use of Jeff Buckley's recording of Hallelujah in the episode, Posse Comitatus, was brilliant.

I come back to John’s acceptance speech here to feel connected to him. What he says at the end, as an actor, chokes me up every time. He reminds me of why I do it in a way. What a mensch. What an actor.
