- The NVMe drive on this Lenovo Legion Y720 gaming laptop is full, here's how you can upgrade the drive on your computer at home to a larger one by cloning it without losing any data. An SSD is the cheapest tech upgrade that can help speed up your PC. There are many programs to do this, and some drives even come with a license for cloning software. Use whatever works for you!

In macrium, you also need to make sure the entirety of the new drive is selected and not left white. Otherwise, it will only allocate the dame 256GB, or whatever the other drive was, to the new larger drive
Bro you are funny af like there's a 40 percent video and 60 percent comedy
this'll be super helpful! I was JUST thinking about replacing my laptop's 500GB SSD with a much bigger one, maybe 1 or 2 TBs, so this video came at the perfect time lol
I genuinely thank you for this video, I always wanted a larger drive for my OS because I only have a puny 110gb drive and it's ALWAYS full with a few MB to spare; I never considered the option of just cloning the drive, which you showed in this video. It encouraged me to finally upgrade to a 500gb as I already have other drives for storage. It's going to feel nice having more than 1gb of spare space from now on!
This is awesome and is exactly why I make these videos! (And to make you laugh of course)
@@SalemTechsperts Yeah the videos are very damn funny too! (didn't expect a reply within a few minutes, lol)

I think I'm in love with this man
I use macrium for partition management, but teracopy for data cloning, great vid!
Teracopy is a perfectly crafted little utility.
I tried and used Magnum Reflect to clone drives for multiple computers using the trial. The interface was very clean and easy to use with a lot of debug interfaces to it (like command line style live logs). 8/10, would buy it if I had more of a use for it, or if they sold a limited personal copy for around 10 dollars.
Also one of the funniest technicians in the world.

I just told someone to use Macrium Reflect yesterday to clone their SSD to a 1TB SSD. Am I the greatest technician that ever lived too?
Macrium Reflect no longer has a free version. Clonezilla FTW.
that's gotta be the best technician i've ever seen
I swear to god this dude either never plays doors and just likes the music, or plays it so much he got attached to the music and uses the music constantly.
Doors elevator music fire 🔥
I love the temp mail but I hope the devs don't catch on lol. That's what I did for the maybe 3 times I needed to clone
I actually do have a license, this video is meant for those that don’t. My process as a repair shop is a bit different from this
Nothing better than classic doors music
Hey guys ! I used to be the tech manager at The Computer Store when it still used to be in Peabody on Andover St (Rte 114) and we used Norton Ghost to clone
Howdy neighbor! Ghost is also a good option!
Macrium Reflect is great, I use it at my IT job all the time :-) Was able to save several systems with faulty SSDs (about to go out, corrupted files) when Acronis or Aomei refused to work
That’s ironic because Macrium always has an issue with failing drives when I try 😅 I end up using Acronis or MiniTool or CloneZilla
@@SalemTechsperts You're right, normally it doesn't work, but you can change the settings to allow cloning corrupted disks anyway. Uncheck "verify integrity of the file system", check "ignore bad sectors" as well as "automatically retry without VSS writers on failure". Then you can clone any faulty disk without issues. Afterwards you can use the typical chdsk/automatic repair/DISM restorehealth etc. stuff to get the Windows install up and running again 👍
no love for dd?
I love the music man. I skip it in game every time out of habbit.
I've tried every software cloner known to man, and all of them left something to be desired, so I spent the few grand on a hardware cloner, and it works amazingly.
Doors elevator music is FIRE 🔥
congratulations man and i hope you got the 1m very soon your fan from egypt
Congratulations 🎉 Boss! I just found you 1 months & you are already I am your little fan 😍 Love from Bangladesh
Gonna remember this for later! My little sister’s HDD is starting to kick the bucket. Should be handy pretty soon
I run a computer repair shop as well. I love hearing you complain about the Lenovo hinges. I curse profusely about them too. Can I ask why you prefer Acronis for HDD's & Macrium for SSD's? I've use them both but I'd like to know your thoughts as a fellow "Greatest Technician that ever lived".
Bro I needed that shit a week ago, I did everything by hand it took me a fk DAY
Beware of those ADATA Swordfish drives, they are known to die very fast and are very unreliable for speeds (1800mb/s from what i remember).

Greatest technician of all time should not cheap out on ssd.

Congratulations bro! I now know why you're the greatest technician to have ever lived. ☺️
I had this laptop until early this year. I upgraded it from 8 to 16gb ram. Surprisingly easy, and gave me the confidence to build a pc.
I really like Macrium Reflect. I really wish they would have continued with the free edition for home users.
Now i cam clone it to my non existent 16TB HDD (btw live was super chill im expecting more lives in the future from the greatest technician thats ever lived😂)
I usually use dd for cloning drives.
(if you don't know what dd is, look up "dd command")
But `cat /dev/sda > /dev/sdb` in a root shell is not bad either.
Personally, I use dd, and not cat, because there's an option in dd nowadays that lets you see progress:
dd if='/dev/sda' of='/dev/sdb' status=progress
I don't think you can do that with cat
@@Tom-uy4io
Basically days after writing the above comment I also switched to dd for the task, dd was just a bit too scary for me at first, which is why I kept clear of it for along time.
@@Lampe2020 dd does look a bit scary for a beginner like 5 yo me cluelessly formatting my boot drive because i typed sda2 instead of sda3
(my mom reinstalled windows on the family computer so i couldn't mess with terminal again till i was 7 lol)
@@Tom-uy4io
And that's probably why I kept my fingers off dd until I desperately needed it for a specific job, so I learnt how to use its basic functionality and then also used it for stuff achievable with other solutions.
The dooors elevetor music in background is hljust satisfying
You videos has inspired me to upgrade my potato laptop instead of buying a new one, it still supports modern drives like NVMe m.2 so it's still good to prefer upgrading it

I do computer repair work myself for a living and cloning is my go to for upgrading drives for clients. I however have had it where all myriad of cloning failed but creating an image via Windows backup to an external ssd and using a windows usb to restore the image onto the replacement drive and that works
Thank you for showing this 👍🏻 now I just need to find the missing motivation to finally do it...

Personally, I use a linux stick (my main machine actually runs linux btw) and use dd to clone the drive and cfdisk to repartition the drive to use the extra space
Sometimes cfdisk screws the superblock info (nothing that fsck can't fix tho)

don't forget the expand the partition after imaging the smaller drive into the larger one.

barely heard the greatest technician that ever lived. gonna need more volume next
Did this with my ThinkPad back in 2019. Bought the model with the least amount of storage and then upgraded it with the cheapest 2 TB drive I could find from a reputable source. I then put the 250 GB NVMe drive in my old gaming PC as a boot drive as back in 2014 even SATA SSDs were pretty expensive. I don't remember what Software I used for cloning in both cases just that I used a 500 GB intermediate SSD since I didn't want to pay for an external SSD case if I was only going to use it once and I found a SATA+Power to USB cable for less than 5 bucks. I also put the 500 GB drive in my gaming PC upgrading my SATA SSD space from 250 to 750 GB. 😊
I love the way you present your videos, but I love YOUR MOM more and longer.
😂
The thought of a family missing for 34 years with absolutely zero hope of knowing anything about them is so terrifying and depressing
This is a amazing life saver. I need to upgrade my M.2 on a windows 10 build and may try to use this method for sure.
This was useful just for the macrium reflect recommendation for cloning ssds!
You’re almost to 1mil you will get there soon ❤
Fucking love you man, I was anxiously waiting trying to figure out how to port the data from the old sata ssd on the PC i built for my dad to a new M.2 980 evo, I had ordered the same ssd reader but didn't know how to do the cloning part, thanks so much again ❤
I used to own a Legion Y520 and I remember being so hyped about the "1TB storage" only to realize it was split between a 250GB nvme SSD and the rest was a standard HDD 😅 good laptop though - lasted me through college before

I’ve used macrium reflect a few times myself and it’s always so quick and reliable, huge fan!
Id buy hugs at this point
Going from Tiny Tim, to Girthy Gary.
TO THOSE WHO INTEND TO USE MACRIUM REFLECT TO UPGRADE THEIR C DRIVE WITH A BIGGER SIZE DRIVE: When selecting your target drive, be sure to click the select the button that says Copy Partitions and select the second option that says "shrink or extend to fill drive", if you don't do this it will only make a 1:1 copy of your C Drive and not take advantage of the extra storage!
Been watching these little shorts on and off, the buy dr- joke made ne LOL but the gold bond joke made me sub
