    Hi Svetlin. Tnx for all the awesome Phoenix tutorials, very helpful.
    I'm on 3.0 and I have troubles making the pFlow particles leave a trail of smoke. Basically they drop a puff of smoke on every frame but since there is quite a big distance they travel each frame I get wide gaps on the trails.
    The way to fix it is to bump the Steps per frame a lot but then I lose all the cool details in the sim.
    I'm wondering if some of the settings might have changed...

      Hey, check the Prt Shape option in the source - if it's in 'Use particle shape' mode, then each particle's attached shape will act the same way as the mesh obstacles - it will act only once per step. However, all other Prt Shape options should produce a continuous trail, but the shape of attached to each particle will be ignored and the particles will leave a spherical trail.

    So I take it that the oil barrels are phoenix emitter icons? If so why so large poly count? Why not just a 2d vector icon?

    Hey i have a problem with the first render of the particles.
    Every time when i start the render it takes so long to render one frame. And is simulates every time a seperate explosion and not my particles. Its like the Pheonix FD source cant synchronise with the pf source, pls hlep

    Hey Svetlin, im one Phoenix fd 3.0 and my explosion is a bit too spikey.. how can i reduce the spikes that shoot out and make it look a bit more natural?

      Ah, Phoenix 3 is already 6 years old, so excuse me if I am citing options that are named differently, don't exist or don't work the same way - so in the Sources that emit from the particles, there should be a Motion Velocity or just Velocity option - the higher you set that, the more velocity the moving particles will add to the simulation, pulling the smoke and fire along. So you could eventually increase this at the start of the explosion, but key it down to zero after 5-6 frames, so the spikes don't form mushrooms at their ends. You could also decrease the Conservation quality from the Dynamics rollout, which would generally make the smoke roll less. Or, if the Sources that emit from particles are in Volume Brush or Volume Inject more, you could decrease slightly their Discharge (could also be called Inject Power or Brush Effect)

    I am using 2.2, and got this error message when using wind. "Objects of type wind and gravity are not supported anymore, please use plain force instead." What does that mean? I get the same error no matter if i a) put forces in the simulation -> interaction panel or b) use the force to affect PF particles or c) use space warps to link the particle with the force.
    Any help please?

      +Onyx Hi! The video is done using the official Phoenix 2.2. Perhaps you are using 2.25? There is a Phoenix Plain Force object there which replaces the 3ds max Wind force. If you are using the pirated version or 2.25, you should watch out for crashes and problems though.

    Hi, and thanks for this useful tutorial, I just made a explosion luke this but when I rendered the movie using vray I found that the camera is shaking, it happens only in animation rendering, not in single frame rendering, is there any bug or fault or something I did? Thanks if you answer me.

      Wow, we already had one report for camera shaking but could not reproduce it.. Can you PM me and upload somewhere a simplified version of the scene so we can debug what's going on? Or in case it's confidential, you could register in the chaosgroup forums and we'll be able to do this the official way :)

    Thanks! I have one problem with my fire, it disappears very quickly. On frame 32 it is gone and only the smoke remains.

      Hey, check the Cooling param on the Dynamics rollout - the lower you set it, the longer the fire will last :)

      Yup, but won't be too pretty :) Most quick setup presets on the toolbar of 3.0 would work with demo resolutions too, so you could use them as a starting point.

    Hello friend, very good simulation, help me with something. The box enclosing the explosion causes the smoke cut the top as if the smoke reaches a ceiling. Once I used FumeFX, if I enlarge the box, the simulation grows but should not grow but should enlarge the empty space so that the smoke disappears in the air or in other words, to make more free space or vacuum where disappear wall without interference. Tak this is achieved in Phoenix? if I enlarge the box, the explosion does not grow with it? Greetings.

      Hey :)) If you want the smoke to exit the box without gathering at the top as if there is a ceiling, you need to make sure in the Grid rollout you have the positive Z direction Open, not Jammed. How do you enlarge the box in Phoenix? If you need to make more empty space to the side, again from the Grid rollout just increase the X/Y/Z sizes and this will do it. I hope I understand your questions correctly :)

I can not get the higher fungus forms. The first explosion generates inverted cone as shown in my picture but in those boxes, and should be made ​​a kind of field where the smoke was below target by the center and above expands to the sides.       Abel Verdezoto Argh, I didn't get a notification on you comment, I just saw it now, sorry for the delay :( Did you manage to get the shape right? I'm not sure if I understand your question correctly, but in 2.1 the simulation should work the same as in this tutorial, you just gotta make sure you follow the steps exactly.

    Everything is going good for me until I get about 26:00 into the tutorial. I click the "Light" box, set self shadowing to grid based, and light placing to reduced grid. Then when I try to render I get an error message with this: "Broadcasting NOTIFY_RENDER_PREEVAL
    Last marker is at ./src/vrenderlight.cpp, line 482: Exiting VRenderLightObj::init()
    I've searched it on google and haven't found any answers. Any idea what might be causing this?

      Hi! What is the version of your V-Ray? Make sure the Phoenix light power multiplier is not zero, and reset all vray settings.

      Svetlin Nikolov I ended up un-installing and re-installing Phoenix. No idea what the problem was, but that fixed it.
      And great video. I'm subscribed and will be checking out all the rest when I have time.

    Hello Svetli, Wonderfull tutoral, really appreciate for it, but, I have some trouble whit the rendering step, when I render the fire explotion, in HD, I get some squares, like pixel, the fire look like a minecraft explosion, If I increase the resolution, mi machine cant work!!..thansk!!.

      Diego Ramos I see, the problem seems to be that your self-illumination may be too bright. Try to reduce the power multiplier in the Lights section of the Fire settings.

      Nope, sorry, it was added in 2.2. In 2.1 you have the UVW channel and you have to use a texture map, but I've never done it myself so can't help much.

      Vicanti Farron Not quite, I know for sure that if your smoke is thicker, it would look darker than it's supposed to be - the colors will be dimmed.

    When I press simulate I get the message "The simulation uses automatic SPF adjustment! This mode is deprecated, to switch to fixed SPF mode select the simulation and type $.advstep=0 in the listener"
    I can;t find where this listener is, can you help and should it be saying this?

      You have opened an old scene which uses max and min Steps per frame, while now there is and exact value for this option. The message means the maxscript listener to the lower-left :)

      Svetlin Nikolov Awesome thanks for the reply, it fixed the issue :). I just have another question about rendering. I have viewed your video about rendering smoke and fire and taken into account the steps parameter (I have it set at 200) and smoke subdivisions (I have it set at 15) but it still seems like my renders are still very slow, it's taking about 20 mins per frame at 853 x 480. I'm using an i7 4770k with 8 threads, is this a normal speed for a processor like this or is there more I can change? Thanks in advance.

      Sam Riley Hmm, that's definitely very slow rendering! Are you using vray or scanline? If vray, do you use a vray dome light?. Also, what is your Phoenix illumination setup - lights count, self-shadowing, grid reduction?

      I'm using vray with a vray sun and a vray sky environment map. Lights and self shadowing are checked in Phoenix illumination

    Dude, in my 3DS max and phoenix FD 2.2 I dont have PhoenixFD properties so i cant make objects unsolid, and I dont have RGB opption at all ... instead i have UVW opption but i cant adjust colors in it ... can you help me fix this?

      Hey, phoenix 2.2 is due to be released in several days hopefully. If you have UVW, this means you are using an older version, 2.1 perhaps. Check the About box next to the Start, Stop, etc. buttons.

      Svetlin Nikolov So there is no way for us in intergrate different colors in our smoke without creating an entirely new simulation per source? Using 2.1.1

      Oskar Wallin Thanks man! No, there is a way - you can do it with UVW's, but I never tried it so can't tell exactly what the steps are :(

      Svetlin Nikolov It says it's suppoed to be implented in one of the samplescenes, called "multi color" but i don't have that samplescene... should maybe get in contact with Chaos group..

      Oskar Wallin Yes, the old sample scenes are not in the latest phoenix, you may try and install version 2.0 to just get them from there and then come back to the latest version. You can check both Multicolor and Paints scenes, they use the UVW mixing :)

      omg, i got that feumfx and i tested it.. everything was fine at begining.. but when i closed 3d max.. and opened it like 3hours after.. then my projects has been fucked up.. idk why thats feumfx fault.. can u tell whats going on? theres just one vray light.. no vray camera options.. and idk whats going.. cant i have both vray and feumfx?

      Maybe you missed some steps. Check if the PHXSources have smoke and temperature checked, and if under the Output panel there are Smoke and Temperature as well.

      Hey, have you tried docs.chaosgroup.com? There are plenty of example scenes and step by step tutorials there. Also, check the channel of RedefineFX. Hope that helps!
