@@EspenKraft hey Espen, would you do a short list of your best videos for your favourite mixing techniques? You have a lot of tutorials out there! :D Maybe that in itself could be the subject of a video?
Thank you for the follow-up video on these! It's always interesting to get a view on what modern "reproductions" are like. They sound good, but look quite cheap...lots of plastic (atleast that's what they look like through the lens) though the hardware looked quite clean and better than what I'd imagined. What was the button and knob touch like? Cheapo cheapo or with nice smooth resistance?
The knobs are ok. Pretty firm and give a good resistance. The buttons however, not too good. Feels cheap. Truth be told, they never failed through all the time I sent with them though. The sound is great, so ultimately it's a great kit (both of them) for the price.
The thing is, the original 303 was a pretty cheap bit of plastic as well. I have found that the TD-3 is a faithful reproduction, and only costs $109 vs the $500+ the originals go for (That, and there are only about 10K of those 303's out in the wild anyways)
Strange. I don't send midi clock from it, but it receives it VERY WELL, spot on, from my RME interface and my Keystep Pro, which I program it from. Never an issue.
@@spookypen Well this isn't reassuring, to say the least. If it stops working via midi, I am in trouble, as I program it via midi and not from the internal sequencer.
Great video, I have both of them and they’re glorious. How do I hook the TD-3 up to an external keyboard with MIDI? I have a DX7 so I would have to use that keyboard
Yes and no. The TX7 must be programmed from a DX7 and will expand the polyphony and voices, but it will not be like ONE FM synth will 32 voices and 12 operators seamlessly integrated. It's still two separate units.
@@EspenKraft Thanks for your lighting fast reply. I may consider getting one then as I have the chance. Edit: I'd love to see a video from you explaining it. There are No videos around that talk about the DX and TX connecting.
Hey Espen, there's bound to be problems with these type of cheaper units, hopefully Behringer will get on top of it, while we are on Behringer, any chance of having a look for you viewers of a Deepmind 6/12?
I've had people offering to send me to loan, but I can't be bothered going to the postal office to ship back and stuff. The day is short enough as it is. ;-)
Thanks for the video - I already have a TD-3 and an RD-8, and the RD-6 is on order - but I have a question - do you know exactly where the MIDI sync lag is actually focussed? I assume that it's only in the RD-6 because I have no problems with syncing my RD-8 to my TD-3, but I'm curious to know if you've tried using both the RD-6 and the TD for the master clock, or only one of them? Does the sync lag occur both ways around or only one? Sorry for the third degree! I'd check myself but I'm still awaiting the RD-6!
To use the Td-3 as master is out of the question for my type of setups. I need to have the Rd-6 to be master and that doesn't work over Midi. But it's not working the other way around either. Again, over midi.
@@EspenKraft - thanks! Interesting, because I plan to sync them all off of an Alesis MMT-8 master clock, so I'll have to experiment with MIDI-syncing the TD-3 to the MMT-8, then using the sync cable from the TD-3 to the RD-6 if necessary...
I had the TD3, loved it and had to get a TR6. The minimal lay out of the TR6 makes it really easy to jam and make music with it. Even though I have better sounding drum machines, I find myself using this one, because it’s fun and easy to use.
That's exactly why I just ordered the RD-6. I have an RD-8 but it's much less portable. It's more capable, bit I also want something small that’s easier to just [move around and] play with. Sometimes less complexity can be good!

Yes, the plastic feel very toy-like and the plastic-welded "stiches", the seem sort of, just cries out CHEAP. Then there's the buttons, they have a very loose, flimsy feel and the tactile experience is rough. More metal and better buttons would be nice. Why is nobody talking about the RD-606 being a total snoozefest compared to the RD-8 which isn't much more expensive? I get that it should be assumed because its a TR-606 clone but ZERO tone-shaping variability!? I owned the RD-8 mk1 briefly and loved how they went beyond the TR-808 especially with the analog dynamics fx. I don't see how this box is any more than a sampler/seq would sound if you put samples of these sounds into it. The only reason anyone would buy this is because they want to have a 606 clone. I don't think being analog really has any benefit here other than "bragging rights" (lame).
first off, its more than twice the price. its pretentious to assume that $200+ difference is inconsequential to anyone. furthermore, its a faithful reproduction of a tool that has been used to make music for 40 years and you’re comparing apples to oranges.
I am a heathen I would hook them up to my daw ( midi sequencer) and control them that way. I like the idea of being able to make small changes in patterns. I would control the knob actions manually and record them to audio after I was done sequencing. Still I am from the school of midi and I never got play with CV but I have heard that CV sync is spot on if I were to use the units that way I would probably do it that way. Love the video Espen

The MIDI sync issue....was this only between units or did they lag with input from a main sequencer?
The issue is from the RD-6 to the TD-3. The RD-6 synced fine from the DAW or sequencer. It's no biggie from me as they both receives sync from other stuff just fine, but not from each other. Again, over MIDI only. Other sync methods work fine.
Hi Espen, on TD-3, while playing a pattern, i know we can transpose the pattern with pressing Pitch followed by a key on TD-3. Can you transpose the pattern with external midi controller? Assuming i hv a dead weight sitting on the Pitch button or add mechanical switch to close the Pitch button electrical contact/points. Thanks in advance.
I have no idea, never tried that and now I don't have the TD-3 anymore. It got traded. ;-)
@@EspenKraft No problem. Will hv to check info else where. Thank you
Perfect level and depth!
Cheers!
If you can not play MIDI notes to your original roland 303, then the Behringer is definitively the winner!
No MIDI on the 303.
Behringer wins. I have them both for a pocket money. That's a good life!
@@EspenKraft I am used to control both with cubase Sending midi notes via Sequenzer, thats the way I do it since Atari times and cubase 3.0. I still have it for a romance and sometimes I use it and the way of music is still working! Runs like a Charme, no computer Virus, no Internet no spy or any other crap with the atari. Using the steinbergs syncronizer and a tascam 8 track with my old Yamaha 02r gives me everything I need. But working with cubase 12 makes fun too, but no Real Problem with the old Equipment plus a whole bunch of 19" Rack synths especially from the 80ties a da 90ties. From 2000 I have not very much Hardware but vsts and the incredible creamware dsp cards, today sonic core with many many dsp Chips and all Plugins.
You deserve Tom Holkenborg's entire collection, it's coming up for sale very soon !
Don't know if I DESERVE it, but thanks for saying! :P
@@EspenKraft Don't sell yourself short. Better you than the fat bastard synthmania !
I'm just about sold on the RD-6, but not on it transmitting the clap...
Apparantly a firmware update solved this
The lame feeling when you buy new device and then waiting for firmware update to fix basic functionality... and then even lamer feeling when device becomes discontinued, dropped support and never got the update.
Know the feeling.
You must be a DSI Tempest User...?
I’ve never heard the RD6 sound this good. How did you do it Espen? Lots of compression maybe?
My mixing techniques are well documented in many of my tutorials. ;-)
@@EspenKraft hey Espen, would you do a short list of your best videos for your favourite mixing techniques? You have a lot of tutorials out there! :D Maybe that in itself could be the subject of a video?
Hi espen. Can you sync the alesis sr16 drum machine with the TD3? Thanks
I assume so. Sold the TD-3 right after I did this video.
@@EspenKraft okay thanks for your reply
Interesting stuff and sound! Tell me please what the pad and from - in intro of song? I like it)
Thanks! Check the tutorial, I go through the tracks there. ;-)
Que bien suenan, y que buen video. Cómo siempre... Saludos...

My TD3 has bad midi sync as well, it's in storage until Behringer fixes it. :(
Strange. I don't send midi clock from it, but it receives it VERY WELL, spot on, from my RME interface and my Keystep Pro, which I program it from. Never an issue.
@@ASH-ou4cg Keep an eye on it, mine worked for about a month, now it won't sync correctly via midi, only the sync in jack.
Thanks! Like any other midi gear, Midi out of the DX7 to the Midi in of the TD-3. Then play. ;-)
Hello Espen, got an of topic question for you. Can you connect a DX7 and TX7 together to create a 32 voice, 12 Operator FM synth?
@@EspenKraft Thanks for your lighting fast reply. I may consider getting one then as I have the chance. Edit: I'd love to see a video from you explaining it. There are No videos around that talk about the DX and TX connecting.
I don't have a TX so can't do it. ;-) Cheers
@@EspenKraft Ah that's a real shame, youd be the first to release such video. Theres one on sale for €200 with an upgraded LCD
Hey Espen, there's bound to be problems with these type of cheaper units, hopefully Behringer will get on top of it, while we are on Behringer, any chance of having a look for you viewers of a Deepmind 6/12?
I don't have a DeepMind so that will not be done until I get one in. Don't know anyone that has one either, at least not near by.
@@EspenKraft ahh that's a shame, maybe someone might read this and loan you one for a while!!
That should work just fine. That's what I did in the studio. DAW to RD-6 (midi) and sync (trigger) to the Td-3 from the Rd-6. No problems at all.
Very good performance 👍👍👍 Have a wonderful day and all week 😊 Greetings Adam 😎
Many thanks Adam! You too :)
First I thought you are again one of these guys saying how Bad the Behringer Clone is, and YOUR Clone must be absolut much better, because.... this and that and everything.... but thx for saving us from that. Behringer Clones are really analog machines and offers the benefits of analog circurits for real and not a Digital simulation, that Sounds certainly very smart and nice, but at the end, very far away from the original charming comparable Sound of a real analog circurit. The Behringer analog sounds might Sound a little bit different, but in general it is much easier to Hit the tone with the same technic than using a completely other technic like Digital Software emulations..... you hear it.
...I could have sworn that Doctor Mix is the Eighties, but I guess that, upon analysis...I....I also am...the Eighties. Sigh. Thx for the vids. Love the wry.
I even have the website to prove it. :P
@@EspenKraft I don't have a website, but I grew up in the eighties, across the street from an endless wheat-field. I was weaned on late Steve Miller (abracadabra), cut my teeth on Thriller and Footloose; and Axle F Theme kept my feet loose even in the depths of grunge. Wish I could still move like that!
haha love the Pacman pieces in the back
Cheers!
My wife bought me the same ones early this year as a birthday present. I wonder if she got the idea when I showed her a part of Espen's video months before.
Cool man, love it! :D
Wow. I found this interesting feature where electronic instruments send and receive MIDI note messages!
would be interested in which way you mean they are cheap built quality, can you detail that?
Yes, the plastic feel very toy-like and the plastic-welded "stiches", the seem sort of, just cries out CHEAP. Then there's the buttons, they have a very loose, flimsy feel and the tactile experience is rough.
More metal and better buttons would be nice. My units worked flawless though and they sound really nice, the sounds has no faults.
@@EspenKraft I see, do you think the Rolandmachines are much better for the price increase of x2.5? From distance i think i like the bigger spaces on the Behringers, the very small Roland ACB Machines did not work for me or the Jupiter Xm.... I think if Behringer would invest a few more Dollars in the Production they could make us more happy.
The TD-3 is ok. I'll just control that from MIDI anyways. The RD-6... well, I use samples when I produce music anyways so that's just going to sit dormant until someone picks it up again... ;-)
I have no idea if the Boutiques are worth more as I haven't tried them.
@@EspenKraft
Buildwise the Originals were'nt any better ....so
@@EspenKraft so the original tb303 and tr606 were also 'cheap plastic' from roland... behringer continued the build type to match the retro units....and to be fair both the roland and behringer are rrp of 'afforadble units : 'cheap".
watched a few vids now on the td3 and some people had also a tb03 ( new boutique) roland version of the 303 and they said the pots on the behringer were much better than roland tb03.
best buttons appear to be an the dyn sync re303 but it's 10x the cost of the behringer....
Hell yes they are.
Which watch do you carry in this video?
Rolex Sea-Dweller. 16600, not a new one.
Nice one! 👌🏼
I’ve been with a few dodgy woman that have transmitted the clap 😆
Ouch!

Nah, old school pop-music is what counts here.
@@EspenKraft I'm synth pop all the way, and a lover of great 80s acts that used synths but weren't strictly synth pop, like the Cure and Echo and the Bunnymen, but to be fair I'm only now developing an appreciation for the beauty and artistry that goes into the best examples of EDM. Aphex Twin is a great place to start for that. But then, you'd have to be the 90s as well as the 80s, and being two whole decades would be a strain for anyone! :D
As nice as some of the instruments they make are, I've been soured on Behringer from their history of threatening to sue people critical of them. :-(
I would NEVER want to run my pro equipment with batteries.....🙄
I would.
@@EspenKraft why? Batteries drain.... As an electrician I'd think you'd have more consistent quality with straight power....
I've run a lot of stuff on batteries during my days, always worked just fine. Roland SH-101, Yamaha KX5, DR-110, stuff like this runs fine on batteries and frees up cables, again nice during a live gig.
Midi sync doesn't work? Really? Must be a bug.
