The line about having the fathers eyes really hits home, looking in the mirror and seeing the eyes of someone who's taken so much from you is so hard.
I've been trying to find the words for that for years, it's so powerful

Most accurate writing on abusive parents I've ever found. And I spent my entire life looking. This is it. Thank you for writing this. No poem, song, or book have ever come into a close second for how incredibly... accurate this song is. I listen to this in my toughest moments and feel less alone. There's just too many VERY REAL details that LEAP out at you as things you've experienced. "Your nails are digging into my knee. I don't know how you keep smiling" is so REAL. And the rage bubbling underneath forced civility. The INTENSITY of that fully repressed rage and anger. He offers a ride but it's not safe. And the heartbeat drum when you are leaving. It lets the listener feel how scared you are of him coming after you. And I have felt that. Fuck. I have felt that so many times. I've lived all of this. Thank you. Thank you for this.

now i have to choose which version i will cry to at night
There's things I really like about the album version, like that rumble of noise and distortion that punctuate some of the darker emotions and feelings in the lyrics, and that hollow, open feel that the solo version brings. It brings a lot more emotion than this version does.
However, I think because this one has the full band, it's a bit more accessible. It cuts from the drama, but at the same time, the original I found to be very, very intense. This version is much easier to listen to. It's still sad, it's still melancholy with this hopeful narrator desperately trying to lighten the situation, but the band coming in makes it feel less lonesome. The situation still sucks, but we all care about you, not just one person in a chaotic, echoing darkness.
I really love the Home Video album, and this was the track that stopped me in my tracks, so maybe it's just me. I appreciate this version, but I'll always love the original much more, if I can make it through it without bawling.
thumbs reminds me so much of someone that i used to be friends with. one of the things we had in common was our love for your music :') we don't speak anymore, but i still resent their family for mistreating them, to put it lightly. both versions of this song are so so special to me - thank you.
Your lines often pare down to the telling detail. Thumbs is a precise dissection of the heart-break of guilt, love and disconnect. You gently echo the true feelings of many. And …. it’s beautiful.
