    I rarely miss a day without listening to Gert playing the organ. One of the best benefits of RUclips.

    It so saddens me that a minority of people make negative comments about Gert and the way he plays pieces of organ music posting them to YT for us to enjoy, I say to these people of critique if you cannot say words of encouragement instead of negative comments of the way someone else plays the piece then dont say anything at all! Gert, by posting his music to yt is wearing his talent on his sleeve so to speak ie:- letting us share his concerts and those of you who are negative just shut up and enjoy the music like most of us are doing. I SAY WELL DONE GERT, you are a phenomenal organist and I love watching and hearing you play and that piece was outstanding!

    For those who are critical, the arrangement may be by Virgil Fox, but its not him playing. Who is to say Fox was right and Gert wrong. It would be more interesting to hear J.S. Bach's comments, and I don't think he would take issue. It is for each musician, in his own way, to interpret and present their own feeling and understanding of a piece. Gert does this with a full mastery of his instrument, and an understanding of the music that goes way beyond that of most organists. I have heard Bach's music played by numerous performers, each, quite rightly, is different. A musician is not a robot, but an interpreter of marks on paper, he or she takes us beyond ourselves to other realms. I am not a musician, but love most music, provided that it affects me in some way emotionally, and this is what happens here when Gert plays. A musician speaks to my soul, my heart, my mind, and I am different because of that experience. I was agitated when I sat down at my computer, I listened and now I am calm and serene, thank you Gert.

    Just because Gert doesn't play this like someone else is no cause for criticism. It just means this is the way he plays it. which is fine. I think it beautifully played.

      It is beautifully played because it is beautiful music - MUT - it is also solemn and should be played at a slower tempo.

    I asked for Gert to play this. I am not sure that that is why he is playing this now. Music is more than sound in unison. To me this is the triumph of art. Measuring himself against the deeper grief. Not just quality, quantity and variation of tone, but the unction of Love [God]. Music is divine. If the divine tone is lacking, the human tone had no melody for me. Bravo, my dear Sir Gert you have this very thing.

    It's amazing to see the concentration and dedication on the music by Gert. Full control and nothing distracts him. This particular organ sounds nice too (been there once, after a 3 hour train&bus ride lol). Great recording!

    • @organbuilder272
      @organbuilder272 8 лет назад +1

      +catwoman First, Virgil's version is slower, more profound, It is more powerful in both first and second movements. The could, though powerful, is softer, thicker, perhaps. Gert is using more diapason stops, rather than flutes, strings and celests. Virgil's phrasing is better. All this because of the organ he plays on and the need for Gert to have a little more experience with such works. That does not mean the boy is not good. He just shot a bit wide of the marks on this one.

      @@organbuilder272 - On the other hand, I just listened to another performance on RUclips which is quite slower, representing a 4 manual ALLEN organ. The tempo reminded me too much of the month we waited and prayed that a person in our extended church family would die because she was suffering too much for too long. The doctors were not able to eliminate her pain
      entirely, so it was a most gruesome, awful experience for everyone that knew her. I respect the work of Virgil Fox, but I never want to hear his arrangement of THAT chorale again, played by anyone. Never.

    • @Engineer9736
      @Engineer9736 4 года назад +2

      robert shaw I don’t think it was necessary to go full science negative onto a comment which was meant nice. Sometimes you can also keep your mouth closed if your opinion isn’t positive. The organist put a lot of effort into this performance and video and then you come after it with everything what’s not good about it. There is something called having respect.

    @Tom Nichol is correct to refer you to the gold standard recording of this by Virgil Fox himself on the Wanamaker organ. I understand that some organs can't offer the presence necessary to carry off the full Largo tempo, but this piece is the musical version of a dying man's last breath. It needs to have that sound of a last, long sigh as one passes from this life to the next.

    Ich finde die unerwartet wenig langsam vorgetragene Version von Gert der Orgel und der persönlichen Empfindung (des bald 20-jährigen Organisten) angepasst.
    Es fehlt die Fülle einer Wanamaker-Orgel und das Echo im grossen Raum.
    Möglicherweise liegt es auch an der Tonträger-Qualität. Denn live fiel es weit weniger auf.
    Sehr gut ist die Registration (minimaler Tremulant) und das sorgfältige Crescendo/ Decrescendo mit dem Schwellkasten.
    Es war mir, als ob Gert mit der Orgel singen würde: So empfindet er - so tönt es für ihn richtig - so würde er es singen. Sehr eindrücklich!
    Danke für das Aufschalten.

    My metronome says Gert is playing it at ca. 40 to the 1/4. That, critics, is a largo tempo in any musician's handbook. As for Virgil Fox? Product of his era and great showman.

    This is being played much, MUCH too fast! Fox specified a tempo of LARGO for his arrangement! There are several videos of FOX playing his own arrangement on RUclips, including on the Wanamaker organ, for which he originally made this arrangement in 1939. I respectfully implore you to watch one or more of these videos, and reconsider the way you perform this arrangement!

    • @greesyduck
      @greesyduck 10 лет назад +5

      Why cannot Gert play it his prefered way when singers sing a song it doesn't have to be sung the way the original artist sings it he or she can put there own spin on it so why are you giving him critique when you should be encouraging the young man, I suppose your one of those people that click the dislike instead of the like Gert in my opinion is a fantastic organ player at such a young age plays so mindblowingly beautiful and he is appreciated by genuine organ enthusiasts who genuinly adore his playing whatever speed the piece is played and this one to me is adequately slow to show respect to the composer!

    No, no, please. You are not our Gert, the hero, the sensible, the great, the XXI Century's organist (without doubt), the one I loved soooo much, the king of the kings of the instruments. What's happening? Your last videos were not what we are used to.
    You have started to change into a serious guy. Yes, I know that in three days you will be 20 (by the way, I wish you a very Happy Birthday, Gert!). But please, take out the organ music from the well of dirty music that ALL organists from XIX Century have drowned the music of this instrument.
    Perhaps what you want is to be an organist as the rest. If this is the case, that's right, obviously. And I am sure that very soon you will be a number one (if not THE number one).
    But one day you will find that the organ you will be playing, will start to spread something like salad and bitter water. There will be not water, but tears of all the people that loved you, loved your humility, and had put in you the hope of making the people to love organ music as you did with me.
    (Yes, I am the man from Spain who wrote you an email 4 months ago and wishig to listen to you and to look at you when you were studying or playing)
    Anyway: my heart thanks you very much for your videos and for your performances.

    I keep listening to this. I think he is playing it more like a hymn and not as a spiritual epiphany. As the dirge of death proceeds it later enlightens into spiritual reality and the registration comes on full force . . . I would like to hear this. Perhaps the organ was not up to it.

    GERT!!! - Way too fast. Use Celestes, soft flutes & tremulant. heavy pedal, Listen to Fox playing it on Riverside or the Wanamaker. It is not just the notes but the way it is played that makes the Fox version so emotional. About 1/2 as fast would be fine - . I'm all for interpretation but....

      +simon jenkins It is called Experience. It is the only thing Gert lacks at this time. He certainly has the skill to play almost anything. I think this is what comes of reading music off the sheet. He is playing as written even though he has slowed it down a bit.

    • @jeffblythe569
      @jeffblythe569 8 лет назад

      +robert shaw For Christ's sake. You men need to get a life. The young man is a prodigy. So he played Virgil's arr. slower than you've all heard in Virgil's recordings. Too slow, by your lights. Why not just give him the one "clinker"? He's brilliant. I love Fox and Biggs, don't get me wrong. But it seems that Gert has always had a league of "haters"... Since he was 15... What the fuck's that about?

    • @organbuilder272
      @organbuilder272 8 лет назад

      +Jeff Blythe Jeff: He played it too fast. And I am not the only one who said so. For your information - I have liked EVERY one of Gert's performances. I have written nothing but compliments for his performances. I have defended him against all comers. Yes, this young fellow is good and with more experience he will be extremely good. Certainly not the flash git that one current figure cuts. I am so gratified that he is advancing into the monumental works of the French composers. I have made ONE critical posting - as have many others, this one piece is not what it should be. This is intended to help him learn, not stifle his ambition. Certainly the boy can accept advice.
