I finally bought my first Retro Handheld the RG35XX-H after your updated (Koriki) review and I fell in love with it. It perfectly fits in my pocket, it's very light and the BATTERY LIFE! So…this thing is like that girl that isn’t the cutest, but she has a killer personality, super friendly, family oriented, knows her way around the kitchen and just wants to make you happy despite her flaws?
Between that oled screen, comfort, and price, this would be without a doubt the single best option for streaming if only anbernic knew what a full sized joystick was
Nice! I was just looking at this yesterday. Debating between this and the RP4 Pro. Also your end point about this hobby being more about enjoying the actual playing of the games and not about raw power is great. I’m experiencing that now by playing Pokémon on a Miyoo mini v4. Certainly not the most powerful or largest, but I had the most relaxing, enjoyable time laying in bed last night playing an hour or so.
This plays a good amount of PS2 and Gamecube. The RP4 Pro does a bit more of those higher end systems, but it's not a night/day difference. Really if you want perfect PS2 and GC you'll want an Odin 2. All of these devices (556, RP4, and Odin 2) offer good performance at their prices. No wrong answer, just get whichever physical shape and screen size and extra features appeals to you!
Very cool and unique review! I'm an older gamer. I was 30 when PS2 dropped, and to this day no gaming system has ever blown me away like that. It was such a massive leap over the original Playstation, and it was the first home console that truly matched or eclipsed the best arcade graphics at the time. I will never forget what playing Medal of Honor Frontline for the first time was like, it was the most immersive and thrilling home gaming experience I'd ever had. Fast forward to today, and my RG556 has over 500 PS2 games on it including MOH Frontline, plus all the GooglePlay and older arcade games and console games too. I just can't get over what a total game changer this is for me. It's unreal how far hand helds have come. The ultra comfortable form factor, perfect control layout and incredible 1080p AMOLED screen make the RG556 such a joy to play. The PS2 emulation is fantastic, and the games look remastered with all those pixels so densely packed on such a high resolution OLED screen. I can't stop playing this thing.
@@54356776 Right? And wow does MOH; Frontline and all PS2 titles in general look phenomenal on the RG556's screen. The pixels are very densely packed so the detail looks incredible as opposed to how bloated the pixels look when displaying retro games on a modern big screen tv.
Comfort trounces pure power any day of the week when handhelds are concerned in my book. Fat lot of good power is if you can't even use it without getting cramped hands or an eye ache squinting at a tiny screen....that's why I pre ordered this when I saw it. Large and comfy looking without being dinosaur huge, great AMOLED screen that doesn't require me to strain my eyes to look at it, and more than enough power to get the job done on the titles I play. Tweaking is the norm with all of these to get the most out of them and I'm good with that, nice to know I don't have to do as much of it here though. Awesome review Mr. Dweeb, with each passing video I'm liking your perspective more and more on this here YT platform!
Your videos always make me laugh as well as providing excellent advice! The RP4 looks sleek, but realistically is unusable for any sort of time without a grip, so that changes the look of it and the price is more similar to this including the grip
If you could just offer a cup (ok, more like a large mug) of coffee with your morning videos, these would be perfect start to our day! As always, thanks for the (hilarious) honest opinions, we really appreciate it. Hands-down, this might be the perfect addition (till something better comes along) to my collection. I never bought a T618 device but I've wanted a system that was somewhere between the Deck/Odin 2 both in size and performance for some time now.
I always watch these nerdy guys on RUclips until their face gets revealed. (Retro Game Corps started out this way). You are doing such a great job being this consistent with grreat content man!
Bro, when I originally saw this, it was clear to me that this was Anbernic leaning into what they do best, which is providing solid quality within an acceptable price point. It's the Nintendo business model and it's a good one. They don't feel the need to be out front. They focus on the quality side of the bell curve and they offer the very best in what's commonly available. I have loved every device that I decided to buy (it's not many), and I'm never letting go of them because when they ring my bell, they really get it right. I generally focus on their most pocketable devices because that's what's practical for me but this one is going to be the first one I buy that's outside that scope -because they were laser-focused on their strength. Sorry for the long comment but, I'll be an Anbernic fanboy as long as they offer real quality. I'll drop them if they let it go but I'm very happy to see this device.
There is a serious rabbit hole my wallet is going down with these retro handhelds. I thought i was good with just my ROG Ally but got the rg35xx H, and now I have the Miyoo Mini Plus coming today. Your reviews are excellent.
That's not so simple. The v90 doesn't store its system on the sd card, it's flashed onto the device itself. So you'll need to do the install on your own. Follow the guide, it's not hard! github.com/TriForceX/MiyooCFW/releases/tag/2.0.0-beta
So we're saying performance wise: RG556 < RP4 Pro < Odin 2? Also, take a look at ATV Launcher Pro for Android. Pretty much exactly perfect for these types of devices.
I’m glad you mentioned gaming experience can be prioritized over top end performance at times. I love the retro gaming community but get burned out when that approach to buying devices gets shot down. If it’s uncomfortable to hold or there’s screen issues, the top end games I could get running aren’t getting played for long
TechDweeb I love watching your videos and always enjoy the thorough reviews, but this is my favorite review yet, "I love having my hands on it if you know what I mean (yeah you do)", lines like this literally have me LOLing ... Anyways had to let you know that you're creating quality content and I'm glad others are enjoying it as well !!! Create on !!
I bought mine for $160 on a local store. One advantage Anbernic has over Retroid is that it is readily available for the rest of the world, particularly in SouthEast Asia where the retro gaming scene is huuuuuuuuuuuge! Retroid Pocket 4 pro on the other hand costs $230 here in the Philippines and takes about a week to arrive.
A T.Dweeb video has something for everyone. For me, this was actually a review of the Texas Instruments TI-108 (3:32). Pocketable. Great battery life. Accurate math emulation. Perfection. #fingies
Thanks for saying so! I for one appreciate dry tech reviews when I need the data. And the silly ones when I want to be entertained. Just like retro handhelds there's different content for different needs!
Your point about "enjoying the experience" is why I still really only use my Anbernic RG351P... It has a perfect GBA screen and runs everything up to PS1 perfectly... Comfort and use case is WAY more important than power... It's why I hope they update their ARC device to be strong enough for Sega Satun eventually... That one is AWESOME for Sega and arcade games...
To be honest, you left out a really important future of this device, and its the steam link and xbox streaming, being able to play modern games so good in that handeld is what also makes this device the winner for me.
Good review! I'm curious if this will catch on and move Anberlick to make a "Pro" version of the RG556 with specs closer to the RP4 Pro in order to close the gap with Retroid. This still looks like a top-notch device!
Ergonomy and screen are important in those kind of devices. That's why i choose RG556. Not regrets at all. Mine works perfectly. About the performance, it's not so far behind compared to RP4 as many may think. I recommend it.
Agree about the comfort. I had the RP3+ and the Pimax Portal Retro that have flat slab backs and I just can't hold it comfortably. Compared to something like the Logitech G Cloud, the Cloud is a joy to hold for lenthy sessions
5:49 They must've updated the software for the sticks, they don't snap anywhere close to as much as in the video, I can entirely fill the boxes green, but they definitely snap a bit more than I'd like towards the XY axis (I assume they have the deadzone for the xy axis a bit too much), but no where close to in this video. I'm not seeing any snap in that make it look like an x. Another issue that makes the sticks worse is how short they are, it makes fine movement pretty difficult. One last thing about the sticks, besides the snap being a bit too much and the sticks being short (expected on a small device), I can't hit the top left part of the box with my left joystick unless I continue pushing even after hitting the plastic around the joystick, which tells me they aren't calibrated correctly.
Hmmm….are the thumb sticks REALLY that bad? If so, how are the ergonomics of using the Dpad? Might be a deal breaker for me. But you raise a really interesting point with this hobby and performance versus experience. Basically I think it comes down to your budget and how important minimizing/simplifying your life is. People who either don’t have the budget or want to go minimalism need the maximum performance out of one device and have to compromise on the experience often times. But for people who don’t mind having multiple devices for specific use cases and have the disposable income to support it, they can tailor a bit more for experience. Nice point Dweeb! Keep em coming.
Yes the sticks are bad. However for most retro games you won't notice. It's more for modern games that require precision (ie streaming). Dpad ergonomics are great!
Looking around at retro consoles lately, I've come to the conclusion that the best ones for actual game-playing are probably the Miyoo Mini Plus and RG556. Neither is the most powerful, but they excel at the overall experience. I'm tempted to get a few of the Miyoo, set them up, and give them as gifts.
Great video. I am ordering this now instead of the RP4P. Hand comfort means more to me then performance. Also the full use of the USB-C port. Like come on RP4P, a mini hdmi port? I know it's for retro gaming but really who wants an old port connection for current TVs. It's a shame about the sticks, head shots and tip toeing around are going to be difficult, lol.
Love your videos. Recently invested in this and love it, just a shame about the cardinal snapping. Curious what front end you're using on the video? I love Daijisho but yours is really unique.
Another banger from Dweeb of Tech! 💚 I was definitely curious about this one, but I think those sticks are the big deterrent for me. I hope it does well and they take elements of this one to make something similar in a few months. ^_^
Ok this is so worth it…spreaded the word too for those that don’t know about it, and they were so impressed by it that they themselves are like Ok!!! I’m going to order one 👍…don’t pass up on this guys I own one, and I would say even though I love my Miyoo Mini plus…I find myself playing this a lot more often And a cool bonus if you have large hands…great device 💪
Hey TechDweeb, Thank you for the great video😊 Yes, I totally agree with you about the RG556, I can't wait to get mine! All the Retroid fanboys just don't understand what makes a handheld! They just think that being able to play a few more PS2 or Gamecube games would be everything! No retroid fanboys! It depends on the handheld experience as a whole, whether ergonomics, battery consumption or most importantly the screen - although by the way the RG556 is better in all respects! It doesn't matter that the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro has maybe 20% more power! It also can't play every PS2 upscaled and hardly any Switch at all except light 2D titles! It's supposed to be a retro handheld, which means that you should also play retro games (GB, GBC, GBA, Snes, PS1, PSP, DS) with it. PS2, Gamecube, 3DS is a nice bonus but shouldn't be the deciding factor with such a retro handheld! But Retroid fanboys just shout that they have 20% more power and R2 has trigger problems, screen problems, SD card slot problems😂🤣😅
I don't care what company a device comes from, what matters is what it can do, and what it's like to use. If it does everything I want, and it's comfortable to use, then that's the one for me regardless of who makes it!
@@TechDweeb Yes you are absolutely right, but many RP4/Pro owners think that they have the holy handheld grail and everything else is garbage or worthless! I own an RP3 and RP3+ myself and enjoy them for what they are! That's why I'm not saying that similar devices are rubbish or not worth it!😊
Game experience is paramount. When a large channel listed the Switch in a best 2023 handhelds video, the comments were flooded with “x is better than Switch” comments, referring solely to synthetic benchmark scores. 🙄
I’m so conflicted on this… The first device I saw of these retro handhelds was the RP3+ Then I learned how quickly it came after the 3, so I waited for the 4 for what felt like forever, seeing device after device that wasn’t the 4 release from Retroid. I got my feet wet with the RG35XX and loved it. I bought the 353M and never used it. Then finally the 4 and 4 Pro come out. And before I could decide what to do, this thing, the 556, comes out, which solves all my problems with Retorids hardware design… But it’s weaker… I got the RP2S for Christmas and absolutely adore it, but I’m starting to catch “big screen envy…” 💀 I don’t want to spent the money for an Odin 2, so the 4 Pro is what I’ve set my sights on, since I’ve waited for it for so long… But what if I get this 556 first?! What if it ruins the experience of the handheld I’ve wanted forever because it doesn’t have an OLED screen or good ergonomics?! How could Anbernic do this to us?! 🤣
@@TechDweeb Btw thanks for offering a different take on front ends with your preference for Dig. All I ever saw anyone talk about was Daijisho, which is fine, but after I saw your RP2S setup video I knew I wanted to put that on mine instead. Or maybe even use both. I’m gonna do it this weekend! Thanks, Tech Dweeb! 😌
I'm a bit worried about the "lower" placement of the D-pad, since I'd be mostly playing 2d games on this. I usually prefer "upper" placement for the D-pad so my hand doesnt cramp up. How comfortable is this thing using the D-pad for long periods of time?
Nah I have no problem with it here. It's a bigger device so your hands are slightly further away from the dpad on the outside, meaning your thumb reaches the dpad as easily as it does the stick.
for me it was between this and the pocket pro 4 and even though this has a oled screen i don't want the switch style thumb sticks so went pro 4, plus the pocket pro 4 has a slightly stronger chip so that also went into consideration but the rg556 is definitely nice.
These are dropping to around $150-160 with the Aliexpress summer sale. I think im wanting one instead of a 405M. Sadly i cant afford both, i plan on eating less to afford one honestly, but im addicted to these things. So its not my fault.
As long as it doesn't have the tons of mechanical failures and shitty QC the RP4 and RP4 pro has then it's an insta win in my book. Retroid along with shill channels treating the customers as beta testers.
Screen size and ergonomics are important to me than performance. I am ok if I can’t play some games but screen size should be more than 5 inches and less than 8 for handheld gaming devices
Rp4 pro sales would be higher if their devices came with games for ppl that dont know how to download games with emulators. I always go with anbernic because they always offer some games out of the box.

Best review on the web ! Hope mine arrives soon
Great review as always. I love your brand of humor. Keep it up. 😀👍👍
I Excellent review! it looks like it plays MArio Kart 7 for the 3ds pretty well. I might add this to the collection! God bless you and yours!
There's a semi new fix for the hall thumbsticks that makes a massive difference. It does require flashing the bootloader but it's not too difficult
can you turn off the screen when using an external display? or maybe a manual way?
Looks incredibly comfortable.
It really is
Just got it 2 day pre load 42,000 games luv it
Okay, the banana convinced me.
I would still get the RP4 Pro but this does have some features that are nice. Anbernic just needs to put a better CPU in this.
Wow you're way slimmer than I imagined you'd be from your voice alone. Like 200lbs difference. Not that it matters but it surprised me.
Haha yeah. I'm one of them scrawny dorks, not one of them squishy ones. :P
"Switch emulation is early in development, it will get better as it goes on"..... Well, that comment aged like milk.
Haha true!
Yeah HUGE missed opportunity with these craptastic sticks. Hopefully we get some 3rd party sticks that can replace these ASAP.
@@TechDweeb I trust you'll keep us posted, fearless leader?
Wow gucci design case! I'll buy this❤
Is that Ali Express link an affiliate link? If so, I want to use it. If not, I'll just buy directly from Anbernic.
I have anbernic rg405v but my dream retro handheld is AYN ODIN 2 PRO! 🙂 Happy Gaming 👽👽👽
I love the Miyoo Mini Plus D-PAD feel. How does this compare? Where can I find another device with a good DPAD like the Miyoo Mini?
I've said it once I've said it again. I'm happy Anbernic read my mails. 😁
Ok this is so worth it…spreaded the word too for those that don’t know about it, and they were so impressed by it that they themselves are like
Ok!!! I’m going to order one 👍…don’t pass up on this guys
I own one, and I would say even though I love my Miyoo Mini plus…I find myself playing this a lot more often
And a cool bonus if you have large hands…great device 💪
That's why I'm not saying that similar devices are rubbish or not worth it!😊
At first ya had my interest, now you have my curiosity 😉
If only I had your heart 🥺
@@TechDweeb too soon, hand holding first at least😂.
Hahha you have the same aura of
TechSource
Nice review with a touch of retromaniac 😆
And before I could decide what to do, this thing, the 556, comes out, which solves all my problems with Retorids hardware design… But it’s weaker…
I got the RP2S for Christmas and absolutely adore it, but I’m starting to catch “big screen envy…” 💀
I don’t want to spent the money for an Odin 2, so the 4 Pro is what I’ve set my sights on, since I’ve waited for it for so long… But what if I get this 556 first?! What if it ruins the experience of the handheld I’ve wanted forever because it doesn’t have an OLED screen or good ergonomics?! How could Anbernic do this to us?! 🤣
Haha I hear ya. There's always a next better thing just around the corner. It's frustrating!
I wanna get this just for the screen!!!
I'm with ya. AMAZING screen on this thing.
Did the thumb stick issue get fixed?
Nope.
How are the sticks ? I heard they were cheeks and a dealbreaker for a lot of people.
Picked this up for my first device hopefully im able to set it up correctly 😅
for me it was between this and the pocket pro 4 and even though this has a oled screen i don't want the switch style thumb sticks so went pro 4, plus the pocket pro 4 has a slightly stronger chip so that also went into consideration but the rg556 is definitely nice.
Great review im sold on this one
Ended up getting an RG405m and have had a great experience with GBA and Gamecube... though I kinda want a 556 now just for PSP on the widescreen
These are dropping to around $150-160 with the Aliexpress summer sale. I think im wanting one instead of a 405M. Sadly i cant afford both, i plan on eating less to afford one honestly, but im addicted to these things. So its not my fault.
Hi. How do you put those custom frames to the games so that black bars don't show?
Which version is let's say the best? I mean the sd card capacity. Is it worth the higher cost?
What about the problems with the WiFi being reported by other reviews effecting streaming etc
As long as it doesn't have the tons of mechanical failures and shitty QC the RP4 and RP4 pro has then it's an insta win in my book.
Retroid along with shill channels treating the customers as beta testers.
One day there will be hand held gaming PCs that can do VR... That's wild...
The music was hilarious , haha
Screen size and ergonomics are important to me than performance. I am ok if I can’t play some games but screen size should be more than 5 inches and less than 8 for handheld gaming devices
Rp4 pro sales would be higher if their devices came with games for ppl that dont know how to download games with emulators. I always go with anbernic because they always offer some games out of the box.
1:47 I cant stop laughing help🤣
How about that stand that used for the usb c to display demo?def a consider 4 sure. wondering at this moment if its link lives on in the description 👀
The tech euphemisms…
I am selling mine in a week of getting it because it’s rooted. I’m not that old idc about emulation. I need my android games to work.
hi, what front-end are you using at 8:23?
