I didn't get this option on my last body, mostly because I forgot about it. Now that it's all set up, I'm glad I didn't. I would have ran into trouble with my wood mount pickups. Thanks for the video, and for all the others in the past months, they're always something to look forward to and I especially enjoyed them during these weird times.
Brilliant - thank you for not just explaining what it is, but the pitfalls too! As for the personal preference, mine is not to have the extra depth. On the practical side it means more work getting a Floyd to sit right but I also just prefer the extra string clearance from the body.
Interesting, informative and very well explained. I've never tried one to know for sure but i suspect i wouldnt like having the strings cramped closer to the body. And now you've made me realize i might prefer a rear route strat for that extra space. Ive never been a fan of all that plastic anyway.

Love your videos. So clear, useful, and honest. Here is a video request. I've seen videos on conversion necks and 7/8 bodies/necks. But I would love to see a video comparing the ends results for achieving a 24.75" scale (i.e. regular body with conversion neck vs 7/8 body and 24 fret 24.75" scale neck). 24 frets vs 22 is obvious, but I would love to hear about balance, weight, and tonal differences (given PU spacing will be a bit different with the two options).

I like it for the low profile feel. I play mostly metal, lots of palm muting. So my hand is anchored down on the bridge a lot of the time. I found the lower the profile, the more comfort over time. A high-sitting TOM otoh, it the worst for me and my typical style of playing. But when I play some old school rock, my TOM equipped guitars are just fine. So in closing, we need to own many guitars to fit many situations ;)
I learned the hard way about fretboard overhangs and deeper neck pockets when I put together a partscaster a few years ago - never even thought to check for clearance there, I'll never forget the cracking noise of the fretboard on my rather expensive custom nitro finished neck when I tightened up the screws. Oops! Saved it in the end by cutting off the overhang and a bit of creative clamping and gluing, but still an experience I never wish to repeat.
Great explanation! People definitely need to be careful choosing this. Easy to run out of adjustment room for your saddle height screws! BTW, your personal guitar is beautiful!

One of the plans on my fiendish experiments list is a Tele with pickups concealed beneath the blank pickguard. This mod will simplify my not having to engineer a custom part to get full range adjustment.
IMO rule of thumb: if your Floyd type bridge sits in top of the body without a recessed routing, it won't work... but with the right body it will play more like a Strat, and the heel is appreciably reduced.

Seems that I missed out on an opportunity. My last build was a LA CABRONITA and the neck could stand a deeper pocket to set into. I had to really stretch the capability of bridge by raising the saddles to virtually maximum height. I wonder if you have to order special neck screws when utilizing this mod.

The thing I love about the Warmoth options is that there's a huge variant not only in personal taste, but in personal taste between the functions of guitars. What I want in a main axe is not at all the guitar I want to set up for slide, and the ability to take options that nobody else would want expands the possibilities of the instrument (and sells us more guitars!). I sometimes think of Paul Reed Smith as the Steve Jobs of electric guitars: he's a very skilled designer, a gifted engineer, and very opinionated about what he wants in a guitar. PRS guitars are GREAT if what you want is exactly what Paul Reed Smith wants. I can'tfully appreciate them because there are too many design choices where I just disagree with his tastes. Being able to duplicate a guitar's specs exactly, and then alter something where I say "no, I don't like that" is the real advantage of bespoke guitars.
Holding a vintage Fender the first thing you notice is the neck sits deeper in the pocket. Looking at the side of an old strat only half of the side dot is visible above the pick guard. What happens on a build, with a flush mount string through body, you wind up at the limits of the string height adjustment screws. It is still playable but I like to see some extra adjustment just in case. You can always trim the pick guard around the overhang. If I had only known I would have ordered it.
I love the overhang gap without the 720 mod, there’s something cool about the fretboard floating above the body. My stepdad saw it and asked me why there was a gap and I explained to him that I had gotten a rear-routed Strat with no pick guard and he thought the gap was ugly. It’s visually pleasing to me.
As I primarily play S- style guitars, no I wouldn't use the 720 mod. Have been a longtime user/ fan of Warmoth products ( '87 '88) and have always been very happy. Thanks for the great necks....love em.
Interesting information. I have two Warmoths without the 720 mod. I can live with a little overhang clearance. But maybe I will try the 720 mod on my next order.
Gretsch did something similar for some models in '18,'19. It lowered the overall action. I love it. Of course I can understand the opposition, Most people don't like playing my guitars because of such low action (I've done similar mods on my Tele's). Lowering the neck, bridge and action also makes the guitars more sensitive to imperfect fretwork.
I did the last one inspired by the Hondo death Dagger from the 80s I use big longboards they're made out of maple my goal is to sell one . Be able to afford Warmoth neck on one and start really putting good equipment on them. I love your content man you got a great job

I have a 24 fret Schecter Damien Elite that will need a new neck soon,it's rear routed and i don't see any gap in the overhang/lip area of the 24 th fret and body so do I need this mod?
Hard to focus on the issue b/c I was so mesmerized by the beautiful spokesperson!!! I have thought if I order a Soloist body that I would get the 720 mod, especially if I ordered a 24 fret neck. If I ordered a Soloist body and a neck contour and the 720 mod would that leave the thickness of the neck pocket so thin that eventually the pocket could split over time? Aaron, I hope the neck dept has caught up with the backlog b/c I'm about to order a custom Gibson Conv neck without a finish. Thanks.

I like the idea of a 720 Mod. I prefer single plane neck through guitars, with the fingerboard thickness the only difference between body and neck. Must check out what you have... Cheers

But what I want to know is why someone would put Seymour Duncan Parallel Axis Trembuckers in a hardtail guitar like that when they're "F-spaced" for trem bridge string spacing. Well, the bridge versions are (patb-1, patb-2, & patb-3). The patb-1n for neck position is standard humbucker spaced? They are sweet pickups, I have the patb-3 & patb-1n.
We constantly mix and match stuff all the time here. It's crazy. Did you also happen to notice that guitar had a TOM bridge and a Floyd Rose nut? We ain't scared of nothing! ;)

When talking about hight of the pickups/brisge etc... Would it be more or less feel/play like a neck through guitar? Since the fretboard would be about as high as one?
It totally depends on the geometry of the guitar. For example, a Les Paul is set neck, but because the neck is angled backwards the strings, pickups, and bridge all stand *really* high off the body. OTOH, a PRS set neck has a straight angled neck, and everything sits down very close to the body. The 720 mod would feel much like that, and not at all like the LP. Hope that makes sense.
So, to clarify: A rear route with a 720 mod would feel like a regular depth pocket with a pickguard? In that case I would go 720 on a rear route and a recessed Floyd. I imagine combined with an angled heel it would make upper fret access better.
Although I agree with You Aaron about the geometry, that video is really informative. It works with carved bodies? I'm a huge fan of Your Regal models.
I have a lovely Strat that i put together myself which has a burl Poplar top.....so of course has no pickguard as it would hide the lovely wood. No 720 mod for me....i love that little gap under the overhang 😁
I have one question. One of the guitars in the vid has a reverse headstock and locking nuts. How do you tune that thing once you lock down the locking nuts? I mean, it has no fine tuner bridge, Floyd or otherwise. Just curious.
I'm curious to know how the 720 mod affects string height relative to body-mounted pickups (no rings). Would the body-mounted pickups be too high and touch the strings with 720 mod?
@Warmoth would a 720 mod compromise string height or a H/H pickup installation (wood routing) on a plain Fender Stratocaster with standard/compatible Fender Stratocaster tremolo system? Suddenly confused... I thought whatever necessary compensation would be taken care of if neck and body were bought together... I'm not too worried about the strings being lightly closer to the body, but am concerned that (maybe) I might have to route the tremolo further into the wood to balance the string height across the board.
I just finished building a guitar with a Warmoth Soloist body. I had a very hard time getting the pickups set high enough. The 720 mod would have probably helped a lot. next time.
I’ve always found it a bit odd that the 720 mod is so unpopular. I wish it were offered more regularly, particularly on bodies like Soloists. But I’ve played Ibanez guitars for years and so I’m used to the neck sitting lower in the pocket. Speaking of that, the way to solve the 720 mod with pickguard is really easy as long as you’re willing to modify. An Ibanez pickguard simply doesn’t extend under the fretboard extension, so you get an even lower feel on the pickguard equipped guitars.
You know... What I'd REAAAALLY like, it a truss wheel adjustment like the newest Charvels, Jacksons, EVG guitars and Fender (some)... That would be awesome.
An email with Warmoth support told me that it IS possible to combine a 720 mod with an angled pocket. Has something changed or is it Possible but not recommended or what? This is something I definitely don’t want to mess up

I've got an Ibanez RT150, which has the "720 mod" from the factory. No discomfort when switching from other guitars.

The 720 mod is great for situations where you're planning to shim a neck.

Will the 720 mod be too low for wood mounted Duncan Trembuckers on a soloist body?
What about a body without a pickguard with a flush mount floyd rose? 720 mod or not??
I have it on a flat hardtail soloist. Looks amazing and feels great for me. But I can definitely see the drawbacks.
Which bridge?
How is the 24 fret extension? Is it reachable? Been wondering for decades at this point.
So, to clarify: A rear route with a 720 mod would feel like a regular depth pocket with a pickguard? In that case I would go 720 on a rear route and a recessed Floyd. I imagine combined with an angled heel it would make upper fret access better.
Although I agree with You Aaron about the geometry, that video is really informative. It works with carved bodies? I'm a huge fan of Your Regal models.
I have a lovely Strat that i put together myself which has a burl Poplar top.....so of course has no pickguard as it would hide the lovely wood. No 720 mod for me....i love that little gap under the overhang 😁
Could you in theory. Create a bigger pocket on the guitar? So a 720 . 24 fret would practically sit flush with body? Or less than a 1/8 of a inch.
I have one question. One of the guitars in the vid has a reverse headstock and locking nuts. How do you tune that thing once you lock down the locking nuts? I mean, it has no fine tuner bridge, Floyd or otherwise. Just curious.

@@warmoth I mean, however you tune it, once you lock the nut it's gonna go sharp, and without fine tuners there's no way to get it back in tune.
I'm curious to know how the 720 mod affects string height relative to body-mounted pickups (no rings). Would the body-mounted pickups be too high and touch the strings with 720 mod?
You would have to be sure to choose humbuckers with the short feet. Anything with traditional long feet would for sure be too tall.
@Warmoth would a 720 mod compromise string height or a H/H pickup installation (wood routing) on a plain Fender Stratocaster with standard/compatible Fender Stratocaster tremolo system? Suddenly confused... I thought whatever necessary compensation would be taken care of if neck and body were bought together... I'm not too worried about the strings being lightly closer to the body, but am concerned that (maybe) I might have to route the tremolo further into the wood to balance the string height across the board.

I never try that but I think I love it but it is not comfortable to play if the string is come closer to the body 😅
Why does that Guitar in the Beginning have a Locking Nut, but a fixed and no obvius way to fine tune it?

I just finished building a guitar with a Warmoth Soloist body. I had a very hard time getting the pickups set high enough. The 720 mod would have probably helped a lot. next time.
I’ve always found it a bit odd that the 720 mod is so unpopular. I wish it were offered more regularly, particularly on bodies like Soloists. But I’ve played Ibanez guitars for years and so I’m used to the neck sitting lower in the pocket. Speaking of that, the way to solve the 720 mod with pickguard is really easy as long as you’re willing to modify. An Ibanez pickguard simply doesn’t extend under the fretboard extension, so you get an even lower feel on the pickguard equipped guitars.
You know... What I'd REAAAALLY like, it a truss wheel adjustment like the newest Charvels, Jacksons, EVG guitars and Fender (some)... That would be awesome.

I wish there is a "720 mod" option in custom bass bodies, I really need it.
An email with Warmoth support told me that it IS possible to combine a 720 mod with an angled pocket. Has something changed or is it Possible but not recommended or what? This is something I definitely don’t want to mess up
Great video in explaining what the 720 mod is but WHY didn’t you tell us WHY you don’t like it?????? It would a great help to determine if we would like it or not.
