Get over the fact that you are not buying a Gibson J200. If you want the real deal then go and buy one. If you want a guitar that looks pretty good then buy this one. Change out the saddle for a bone one, change the bridge pins to bone or brass, bin the strings and replace with some Elixirs, and boom you have a great sounding guitar that wont break the bank account.

For those in doubt, with a string change these are a great sounding guitar, to my ear at least. I've used mine on multiple home recordings and one studio recording, it performed exceptionally well considering it's price. I do also play with .11 guage strings, unlike most who would use .12's on this sort've guitar, so that's another factor. Don't get why the sound is being compared to a 4.5k guitar in this video lol.

Gibson fanboys. Rest assured folks in the comments. for example, I’ve sonically tested the inspired by Gibson hummingbird and the Gibson hummingbird and the differences were so little that it honestly didn’t even matter. People are always gonna talk up the Gibson variant regardless of what Epiphone puts out because of well to put it plainly, if people knew they could get basically the same thing for way less then they wouldn’t buy the more expensive one. But also at the same time, the idea of being able to own a 5,000 dollar supreme guitar really does drive the people to that purchase because let’s face it, humans like valuable nice and shiny things that they can feel good about themselves and brag about to others. Don’t get me wrong I like Gibsons too for sure but coming from a musician, with a logical stand point, if something works just as good as something else that would cost 3 or 4 times the price I mean if we use common sense then the confusion of it becomes pretty plain and simple. In other words, if there is too little of a difference to make a difference, then pumping one thing up over another just for the sake of selling the more expensive item is morally wrong and in a sense takes advantage of its customer base. There, I said it and I’m not taking it back!!! lol

Agreed 100% I owned a Gibson J200 from 2003/ 2019 and sold it because I didn't play it much due to it's size, but I missed it and after reading about the Epiphone 'Inspired By Gibson', I bought one. So far, I can't find £4000 difference in the playability, sound or appearance. It doesn't make sense to pay over the odds for something you can buy over five times less expensive with a different headstock. It's basically all down to snobbery, it's the player that matters, not the brand.

I think you're sorely mistaken. I've got no particular love for Gibson but after playing so many different guitars all these years I can OBJECTIVELY say with assurance there's no replacement for a Gibson. Nothing sounds as good. What professional artist chooses to play an Epiphone instead of a Gibson? We're now seeing other manufacturers pushing nitro finishes on their top end guitars, while Gibson has been making them all in nitro forever. Gibson pleck all their guitars too. Who else does this? Every Gibson is made in USA which is the golden standard of guitar quality. Regardless of what guitar you get, if it says Gibson on the headstock, you can be sure that it's a sick highest quality guitar. If you could get the same at 1/5th of a price then no one in their right mind would buy a Gibson, let alone the guitar players who are usually broke because of gear acquisition syndrome. Gibsons are built better than anything else, I only wish they had stainless steel frets.

I think lower priced 12 strings are the ticket. I'm the typical collector with over 40 and they are high end, but the 12 string is almost a novelty and higher maintenance. The sub-thousand range is perfect. EPI makes fantastic guitars. Let's be honest, i owned the black back lp custom and the hummingbird, and i have the gibson equivalents. Sorry, there is a major difference. People talk about changing the nuts, pegs, tuners, etc. Nope. You'll get closer, but it ain't gonna get there.
That being said, I'd buy all Epiphone if i didn't get great deals (ridiculous deals on some) on Gibson's. I readily admit id never pay full price for the 13 that i own. Example: my es335 is not $2000 better than the epi. I readily admit that, but I didn't pay anywhere near $3999, nor would I. Epi is great, hands down

I don't know if this matters but when I changed out the strings the saddle fell out and when it hit the floor split in two. So, I took it to my local luthier to set it up with a new bone saddle. I had the set up go with the action as low as possible without any fret buzz. Anyway, when i got it back, the guitar sounded and felt completely different. The sound acoustically, night and day. The boom was more present with the low E and A strings. It doesn't sound as good as a Gibson J200, but it sounds much better after set up and a new saddle than it did when I got it out of the box. When I got it I had mixed feelings out of the box. After getting it set up with the new saddle I absolutely love this guitar and can't put it down. So I'd suggest if someone has bought one and is feeling mixed about it, get it set up and have a new saddle put in.

I think that these Epiphones J200's will be close to the Gibsons in some years when the wood's dried out. I have a Masterbilt EF 500 RA made in 2010. Back then it didn't sound as good as it sounds now when the woods are dried out. Same thing will happen with all this solid wood Epiphones after some years. I think they value will definitely go up.
In the forties, fifties and later the guitar manufacturers used naturally dried wood and that's why the guitars were from start on great.
I have a laminated jumbo Yamaha from 1969, it's a vintage looking guitar, but it's laminated. The wood can't "work" so the sound is probably as bad as it was in 1969. It doesn't have any depth. It is loud, but that's all ..

Much is made of the J200. I think it's a great guitar but what's not understood is these guitars were originally built way back as a stage/tv guitars, more for their fabulous looks than their tone, although I'm not saying they don't sound good. The one I owned was a blonde, a very good example but not good enough to make me want to keep it. You are right about the J200's limited volume and projection, much due to the maple b&sides and possibly the big scratchplate.
I don't own an AC630 but spent some time playing one and know it's quite simply a better guitar than the 200, looks good too.
I also had an HD 35. Wonderful dread, but too boomy over the trebles. I sold it.
The jumbo I keep now is a spruce/rosewood Faith which for me is actually better than all three, volume with full rich sustain, great for big open chords, picking and cowboy songs. The price and headstock badge to me is irrelevant, I simply go on the tone and acceptable playability.

@@maxwellfan55 Hi Maxwell, Thnx for replying and confirming the lack of volume and projection. I was just baffled that they always claim they are loud boomy guitars with projection, but it's the opposite indeed! And in hindsight the Martin D 35, it is boomy over the trebles indeed, and glad it needed a neck reset. I had to do without that guitar for up to 9 months to a year, with a reset under warranty. I told them no way! And they let me have the Eastman AC 630 for it instead with some adjustments I needed, like a K & K pick-up, and a see through scratchplate, so I still can see the full sunburst body. I was just doing some browsing in the shop I bought it from( The Martin) ) And was drawn to this Eastman AC 630. I tried it, and tried it, and tried it! Couldn't believe my ears, how good as the guitar did sound, it has everything the Gibson J-200 is supposedly famous for, but lacking) I lost a little money on the Martin, but I did have it for 3,5 years and had minor wear and some minor dings, but I didn't have to pay a dime for the Eastman. You won't regret it when you finally have saved enough money to buy it. And then the Epiphone J-200 IBG came on the market in 2020/2021. It looked so dam'n good, for a 7th of the price of the Gibson '57 model counterpart, almost excact identical for at least 90%. I just have to had it, and it is a good guitar for the pricetag, at least I can justify the sound for the price tag, wich I can't say for the Gibson. The sound between the Eastman and Epiphone IBG is a difference of night and day of course. The Eastman blows the Epi out of the water. But it's not a bad guitar to have on the side. And I know a lot of people will disagree with me on the subject, but I think it sounds almost excactly like a Gibson J-200. A lot of people will say it is lacking the boominess of a Gibson( but what boominess? :) IMHO a lot of people know it that their Gibson is not the beast of a guitar wich they claim, it is difficult to say I think, that they payed $ 4500- $8000 for a guitar that is dissapointing in sound.

@@freddysnip6257 Hi Freddy. That Eastman jumbo will cover all your needs for playing inside the house and for live acoustic sessions. The one I played just needed a little setting up and off you go, a damn fine, top notch guitar with a sweet, powerful tone. The Epi will take care of your needs for sound and taking knocks when playing in riskier places like pubs etc. So a perfect combination to own both.
That said, I'm still a big fan of Gibson acoustics (looks, sound, great playability) but what I've learned over the years is they vary very much from guitar to guitar. You can get a good one next to an absolute dog I wouldn't touch in hell.
The J200 I owned WAS excellent, another in the shop was just awful even though it still sold for top money. It's my belief many people want a J200 mainly as an acquisition, they are sold on the looks and reputation even before they bought one, which is still ok IMO, because I'd also love to own all kinds of guitar if money and storage space would allow. I already have loads of carefully chosen guitars, and love to play them ALL! I'm currently playing a lot of classical, so would recommend one of those too.
I've own three top-end Gibson acoustics in the past. J180, SJ200, and Hummingbird TV, the Hummingbird being easily the best of the three. But I eventually sold all of them for other (better) instruments.
Regrets? Yes of course. But in my tenure mostly these fine guitars stayed mainly in their cases in favour of more "working" instruments.
The one I prob would keep is a J45 if I could find a good 'un.

Thank you! Finally someone being honest about these. That doesn’t take away from guitar at all. It’s just that it’s NOT a Gibson J200. The Epi still sounds great but it’s not the same!

Low end boominess on an acoustic feels cool but is worthless when recording and in live sound. Every sound engineer is slapping a high pass filter at 100hz over your low end.

Of course it’s gonna be underwhelming compared with a guitar that’s 5x the price. Would be more helpful to review it on its own merits and against similarly priced guitars.

Saying it sounds like a laminate is disgusting talk!!!! They are all bloody solid wood!!!! Sales men in most music Shop Video's always talk and find faults in cheaper guitars or guitars they do not sell in pursuading you to buy a much more expensive one from them. Not many people can afford a Gibson J-200. JP Cormier is one of the greatest acoustic guitar players on the planet and he has bought the Epiphone J-200 the Hummingbird and the J-45 and says that they are absolutley brilliant in every way.

Really glad you did this review as it’s in my price range, but I can’t help feeling that you ought to have played the Gibson alongside the Epiphone as you ran it down so much, boo! I’m not a pro, so even if I could pay for a Gibson j200 I wouldn’t, they’re a guitar not a house so not about to take out a second mortgage. The Epiphone sounds nice and the price nicer.

Halfway through, it sounds pretty cheap to me. For someone spending $1000 on a guitar, I’m assuming you’re not a beginner….you can get a better guitar for $1k. If it’s gotta be a G style, save up more and get a used j45. If it’s gotta be an SJ200, save up a lot more and get the Gibson SJ200. If you don’t like those options, well…start a life of crime and get one for free….or, become wealthy and price won’t matter….ORRRR become famous AND wealthy (price won’t matter, and it’ll be free or deeply discounted.) Those are your options.

The great majority of Americans do not have the financial means that you guys were blessed with. Therefore, Epiphone is the poor musician’s, at least my own choice for my guitar brand. Gibson G series. Break them down and see for yourself the bad build quality. And still over one thousand dollars in price. Yes, they do have solid back and sides. However, the build is very sloppy.
