What a brilliant combo, two people I deeply respect. You've both contributed a lot to Scottish mountains from different angles, nice to see you together.
Not only a stunningly beautiful adventure, but a history and ecology lesson too. I've never seen the Aurora. Admit I got tears in my eyes. Thanks Murray and Iain.
Totally outstanding Murray, and what an interesting video. I’d heard of this patch, but none of the detail covered here. A joy to watch as usual, thanks so much.
Always absolutely love your videos no matter what and it also so exciting when you do add another person. Me and my husband paused it and were trying to guess lol …. We were definitely wrong .. not Jerry or Ray . Excellent absolutely brilliant Murray … learnt so much and also “ it’s crying “ my word now suddenly my urge to recycle even more went up a a scale. The thought of its tears 😢 …. You put it into simple human language that made me think . Iain dedication and enthusiasm was also a spellbinding watch. What a combo and ordered his book ( I know it wasn’t a plug for us to do so but grateful you highlighted the fact he had one out on the subject). We have watched you for over 4 years now and started when we moved to Scotland from Cornwall…and live at loch fyne. We have watch you say goodbye to your mum, introduce your family more, introduced your wee dogs ( so cute) and helped us learn so much about Scotland and learnt the lingo ( lol eg stream : burn ) . We appreciate the dedication sincerely we do. You do have an impact with your videos and never doubt your absolutely incredible editing skills . 👏 Cindy & Frank x
Thank you Cindy - so nice for you say such nice things. You will enjoy Iain book - such a good read :) Hope you enjoyed the video and please tune in next week as I have a rather special mountain featuring :) Thanks for watching ATB Murray
Wow! This was wonderful.- loved the silhouette shot of the two of you at sunset with the waving grasses. And, what a lesson the ‘weeping’ snow patch gives - we must all do our best to mitigate the effects of climate change. You’ve excelled yourself with this one, Murray. Can’t thank you enough. A.T.B.❄️😪🏴
Brilliant chaps. A fine adventure 👏 That aurora too. 😍 Had the pleasure of meeting lain a few years ago & a few of us explored snow caves at observatory gully, Ben Nevis. Nice guy, knowledgeable too.
So I have been in the area on the first week of October and there was loads of snow patches on the Braeriach range, as seen from below when doing the Lairig Ghru. Hopefully the sphinx held on :) What a great video, as always.
Hey Murray! Not able to watch until now. I follow both of y'all on twitter and can't thank you enough for this vid. I'd heard of the sphinx briefly years ago, and have been learning more about it from Iain (I think he went there a few weeks ago with a film crew?). Anywhoooo, what an incredible trip. Lots of phenomenal views, 5:21, 8:21, 18:29 (that sunset moved me so much, you know me I'll always mention when something brings tears to my eyes), 20:20, 25:48, and WOW the drone pulling away at 35:23. And the aurora! I thoroughly appreciate Iain's remark that traveling there is like a pilgrimage, or like going to an altar. I'm not religious and am more spiritual by nature if that makes any sense, and that really resounded with me. It really did appear as if the pinnacle patch was crying, very apt. And the green moss, so pretty! Haven't been on twitter in a couple of days so when I hop back on will have to go to Iain's TL and see if he's mentioned if it's gone now. Or maybe you have? Thanks so much for another great vid and a chance to learn more 👋
Such an interesting and educational video ❤️. The Northern Lights and quarry were magnificent 🏔️. Thanks again for sharing this informative information 👏🏻
What a super Video, as always. Spectacular scenery, natural beauty. The Aurora was magical. The video was also informative, raising questions on our changing climate... Thanks for sharing.
Thank you - the views were amazing and was so nice to capture the northern lights on this one too - Iain was incredibly good company and all round it was a grand camp and outing :) Thanks for watching ATB Murray
Great video as always and informative as well. I wasnt aware that there are snow patches in Scotland that last throughout the year and even for centuries. The sphinx must have been much bigger some 100 years ago. Would be interesting to see some old photos or drawings.
Really enjoyed this one Murray, never heard of the Sphinx but as they say every day is a school day. Iain seems like a very interesting and knowledgeable guy. Once again thanks for taking us along. Brian.
Absolutely amazing Murray. What a journey and privilege. I have seen the patch on many a trip instructing, and descended that slope in to the Garbh Coire and Lairig Ghru . It's big remote country. Amazing Aurora, so want to see that. Thanks so much for sharing
Oh wow Murray, absolutely amazing and super professional 😊 a brilliant documentary with Iain and some amazing Scottish scenery. Really enjoyed this one and the factual side of it. Better than anything on TV that's for sure :) Thank you both!
Good evening Murray. Absolutely loved that. Some stunning views and so interesting listening to Iain talking about all the history of the Sphinx and his knowledge of the area. I’ve been watching your channel now for years now and I would go as far to say it’s one of my favourite videos. Thank you ever so much for sharing it with us. All the very best. Dave 😃🥾⛰🏴
Thought I recognised the track on the way in! Really interesting vid. I follow the FB page for snow patches remaining. My favourite place to hike and bike too all in one video. 😊 Thank you.
Someone as fit as you for long distance, never thought I'd see it. Terrific video, Murray. Spectacular views of the Cairngorms. The Aurora was very special (again).
This was such an interesting one Murray and very educational in so many ways. Thanks so much for sharing this. It was very poinient in a lot of ways mate. Cheers again
Some stunning video there, Murray. Not a half bad interview either! Just fantastic! Very lucky with the weather as well. Your aurora footage is top notch. Super enjoyable. Cheers, and ATB!
Hi Murray, thank you once again for another wonderful video. We camped a short distance from you a few years ago, on a 3 day backpacking adventure, and loved the isolation, and feeling so insignificant, amongst such awesome scenery. We took some photo's surrounded by the snow, to try and impress our friends back in Norfolk. I must say on a technical level how superb you manage to film, present, record and edit your films, so professional. Having just watched the end credits of the last " Grand Tour " where although in total contrast to your film, a crew of over 70 do not make a huge difference to the quality and final production. Well done, and thank you, to you and Iain for such an informative film.
Hi Murray best video seen to date absolutely interesting to learn about the snow patch from a very knowledgeable man like lain just a pleasure to watch
Another spectacular video. One of my favourite areas. It hides its jewels from outside eyes. Only by walking out into the middle of it do you really get to see it at its best. Hard work but well worth the effort.
An excellent video Murray. And what an amazing location. You both presented quite a different but interesting subject. Your brilliant photography captures the stunning scenery both during the day and during the night. Many thanks for sharing.
Great video Murray - what an interesting and amazing place in the Cairngorms . so interesting to learn about the history of this patch of ice and the special remote landscape it sits in. The photography was extra spectacular and what a treat the night footage of the Aurora was. Thanks to Iain for sharing his knowledge and obvious passion about this wild area and the Sphinx. The bright lichen was so special to see. This has to be my new favourite video !😊😊😊😊
Another first in this video was no mention of Scotch eggs ! What a place that is, its a shame we are warming up year on year. Thanks for that one Murray. Aurora was awesome.
Please be rest assured that although no mention was made of them - four were taken on this trip (and four did not return to the van!!lol) Thanks for watching ATB Murray
Hi Murray. Yet another stunning video. Great to be able to join you on the adventure. BTW I am the person who referred HH to you. I thought that it might be an exciting collaboration. Looking forward to the next adventure already! Thanks
Great film! I was over at Glenmore Lodge (on a canoe course) for a week from 16th September. Had great weather which was very surprising for Autumn! I doubt the “sphinx” survived 21 degrees C!
Brilliant video. What a trekkan, long ass cycle. Defo making use of the bike. And wonderfully northern lights captures. Thanks 🙏 I didn't know about this lochan, I will need to go put that on my bucket list for cold swim videos 😅😅
Outstanding Murray. Love the documentary/ interview style. A new dimension and great to learn something new - Iain clearly knows his stuff. Hoping to get some hills done with Gerry in the Cairngorms soon. Looks otherworldly!! Can’t wait . 👌👌
Loved this one Murray. Learnt about this one in geography class in Aberdeen although I reckon with Iain teaching us it would be far more interesting lol. Great duo though!
Hi Murray what a fantastic video as always, the footage of the northern lights was spectacular, very informative regarding one of the last remaining patches of snow quite sad the speed it is melting but rest assured with winter around the corner won’t belong until the first fall of snow, what a lovely remote walk this week it looks quite intimidating up there so well done both of you take care.👍
Well, that was exciting! I read Christopher Nicholson’s book Among the summer snows a number of years ago and really enjoyed it, will have to get Iain’s book now! And your drone shots of that corrie are absolutely stunning, what a place right enough!
Really interesting video this week. A superb documentary about the Sphinx and its increasing rate of disappearances. And what a fabulous time lapse of the aurora. Any chance of a longer version of that on its own?
Thanks Alasdair - think the total Timelapse was about 4 minutes !! Not sure it would hold everyone’s attention for that long ;) lol 😂 the knowledge Iain has is second to none and it was a great privilege to spend time with Iain and visit the Sphinx - a special place :)
@@ScotlandsMountains I'm sure I'm not the only amateur astronomer here, 😀. I was a bit horrified to see the urban lights from your remote camp. Not quite the back of beyond. I do love attempting to identify the constellations and stars in your night sky shots.
Liking this video very much Murray. Very interesting and insightful. If this is a slight change in direction for your videos, it gets the thumbs up from me.
Update - the Sphinx melted around the 3rd or 4th of October 2024 - see link : facebook.com/share/p/CdEjAx4XGSeevNvH/?mibextid=K35XfP

This was fascinating. Great that you could do this walk together and then share Iain's knowledge with us.
Thanks Sue
Not only a stunningly beautiful adventure, but a history and ecology lesson too. I've never seen the Aurora. Admit I got tears in my eyes. Thanks Murray and Iain.
Thanks for taking us to such a unique place. Outstanding video, Murray.

Thanks Garry and thanks for watching 🙏👍
Stunning photography.

Fantastic to learn about this Murray. I'd seen "The Sphinx" marked on my map and now you've taught me what it marks.
