When I arrived in Australia newly, most of the Nigerians I met advised me to go into the healthcare sector. I found it a bit strange they were all recommending the same type of job, because I didn't have any background or interest relating to healthcare. Anyway, fast forward a year later, I now have a professional job in the Tech sector which aligns with my interest and I've never felt the need to work in healthcare. Nigerians need to know healthcare isn't the only lucrative career path here.

Yes Chioma, I lived in Ireland, UK, and now Canada. I experienced the same thing in all of these countries. I was told I can only be a nurse or work in care and nobody will employ me as an accountant. Today, I am a Chartered Accountant (CPA) and work as a Tax Accountant here in Canada. Most Nigerians I met here did everything to discourage me. I tell people the best thing they can do when they relocate to a new country is to try to make friends from other countries.

How i got my job as a with a degree from senegal and chine. 1. Select tbe field. 2 train for 3 months and publish your work if possible. 3. Get an entry job even if it has nothing to do with what you want. Mostly casual. 4. Train and apply and go for placement companies ans choose the field you trained for above. 5. Once hired, do not sleep and work as if each day is your last. 6. Enjoy your work

The care industry isn't always easy. Some carers don't last a day.
Going into an old person's home and finding them dead or trapped since last visit without their alarm.
Finding the house full of shit from bed to kitchen and bathroom isn't easy for a lot. House full of gas ,possible suicide. Having police assistance to get lady into residential with a crazy son causing trouble. There is a lot that is not made public.
Then, the racial issue the company can't discriminate on color or gender but the client can and do.
Nursing, my sister is and eventually gave up due to the criminal hours.

Very interesting video, thank you for the "insiders" scoop. It's very interesting how Australia mirrors Canada almost exactly in terms of what they want new immigrants to do once they arrive. In Canada there is a severe shortage of personal care workers, not just because of burn out but also because it has always been one of the lowest paying jobs so people weren't aiming to work in that industry. Over here there are way too many agencies to act as "middleman" between yourself and work. Unfortunately those agencies take too much of a cut from your hourly wage making all the stress, effort and hard work not worth it for those who are aware and with eyes open to how the system here works. It's also interesting how expensive housing has become in both countries. Apparently Australia is 2nd only to Canada in terms of how housing costs have sky-rocketed in the last 10 years with costs going up 500% in Canada and 400% in Australia. Very insightful video, thanks again.

This is my second month into support job and yesterday my employer had a first review with me. So fascinated about how well have done in the job and advised me to get my contract letters and the benefits I would start getting after 6 months but I asked myself, do I really want to work here for that long? And I responded No! Doing it to get the required experience for my social work masters next year.
How lucrative is social work in Australia? Biko what aspect of social work did you study?
Nursing is not for me, I had thought about it 1 million times and my heart and my head echoed NO!!!!
I want to become a social worker and still go further to standing in the lecture hall, teaching it. God help us.

Goodluck sis.

I want to study business, however, due to my psychology background, everyone is advising me to go for social work. I know social work and nursing both is not for me. What do you suggest one can opt a pathway if their course is not in the skill occupation list?

    • @lifewithchioma
