  • Our violinist Alice Earll introduces her baroque violin.
Alice is playing on a violin from 1842, made in London by Thomas Kennedy which has been set up in the style of a baroque instrument. This violin is kindly on loan from the Harrison Frank Family Foundation. The baroque style bow Alice is using is a modern replica of an Italianate style found in the high baroque, made by Timothy Richards. The photo comparisons are of a violin by Benois Fleury from 1759, which is a more authentic and clearer example of the baroque style of violin making and the modern violin by Harris and Sheldon from 2000. The modern style bow is by James Tubbs, made in the Tourte style from the late 19th Century.
🎵 Te Deum: Prélude by Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704)

I think the Baroque violin is sweeter than the modern. I love Baroque music

I think the baroque fiddle sounds fuller and more round. The modern fiddle sounds thin and tinny compared. Thanks for posting !

Generally the Modern Violin w/ Steel Strings is supposed to sound fuller & brighter remember? Over the years the String Tension has actually dropped, & there's a PDF explaining everything.

Actually if you looked extra closely you'll notice she was using more Vibrato to compensate for that

Actually on a Modern Violin we most likely use Flatwound Strings. Flatwound Strings came as early as 1874 and they were originally designed to replace the Gut Strings on Bowed stringed instruments cause they last many times as long, hold tune better, and the flat surface helps with Bowing on the strings.
