Freezing lemons. Super juicy when you defrost them in the microwave and the peel is easy to grate in the correct amount for a recipe. No waste. Even whats left can be composted
If you know you'll automatically have too much leftover, buy enough to have a big batch for preserving. There's just 2 of us old timers here. An example is cabbage soup. When I buy the cabbage, I don't buy the smallest head. I buy the biggest one or 2 smaller ones. Result is a BIG batch of soup, ready for the freezer in quart sized containers (meal for 2). Another example is a holiday turkey. For us a roasted chicken is more than enough, when we don't have company. Instead, buy a BIG turkey with the intent to turn it into many meals. I've bought 20+ lb turkeys and ended up with pints of canned turkey and turkey broth (use chicken broth instructions). It's hard to beat having $.39/lb turkey meat in your choice of preservation method in the pantry.
People buy bananas wrong. Don't pick up one connected bunch but pick and choose. This is per person so adjust as needed. First you want immediate use so a ripe yellow banana is good for two of them. For the next three you want half green and the last three as green as you can find. In this way, the bananas will ripen through the week instead of ending the week with a couple that have gone black and mushy.....though that makes them perfect for banana bread sooooo......
As usual, you always have such great ideas. I have been making yogurt. I have never liked yougut until I started to make it. Thank you for all you share!
Thank you Kylene - I watched a video a while back on how you make the broth out of the chicken bones - because of you I have an entire shelf of freeze dried broth - no more store bought!! Thank you for the tips!
I think dehydrated food can last a year or so but freeze dried can last many years, 25 or so. But a freeze drier is very expensive. Dehydrators can often be found in thrift stores. I got one for $10.
@jackgoldman1 Oh, I so agree! A neighbor asked me the other day what I was going to do if food prices keep going up. I said that I would simply eat more soup! Homemade, of course.
I have a friend who found freezer burned ice cream in her freezer and made muffins with it. She didn't tell her family what was in them but they raved about how good they were. They asked what she did and she just shrugged her shoulders.
I seldom buy fewer than 3 rotisserie chickens. I freeze dry lots of chicken chunks. I make bone broth out of the rest including the skin, because the skin has a lot of fat. After making and straining broth I refrigerate and collect that awesome fat layer to freeze for cooking fat. It is valuable. Then I oven dehydrate the broth and powder for instant bone broth to add to anything.
I have taken and shredded up zucchini, dehydrate, then crush them up and put them in my meat loafs. Kids loved it!. My daughter called me up and asked how to make my meatloaf but I forgot to tell her about the zucchini. She called me back the next day and said it didn't taste like mine. 😂 I started laughing then told her about the zucchini. There was a VERY long pause. Then she asked if I had any zucchini to use next time😂😂😂
The jar you showed with the shredded cheese in it where did you store it and was it vacuum sealed or just put a lid on it what did you put in the cheese to keep it from clumping up😊
It was Costco shredded cheese that we just put in the freeze dryer. I put an oxygen absorber in the bottom of the bottle and then I vacuum seal it closed. It should be shelf stable for 15 years or so not that I’ll leave it there that long, but it’s nice to know.
You can dehydrate milk and have a powered milk. We had milk left over so I dehydrated it. I don't have a freeze dryer. Too expensive for us. I agree if in doubt throw it out.
If I grate an entire block of cheese and then want to freeze it, should I add anything to it before freezing it, or is it ok to just put it in a bag and freeze it as is? I keep thinking it will just thaw out as a mushy goo. But I don't know what to add to it so that it doesn't ruin the taste.
If it was just for banana, then yes expensive. Obviously though provident Preppers freeze dry lots of different items, especially when kids were at home. Still beyond my finances, but I would love to have one.

Great tip!
11 kids, holy shmokes! Really great tips, thank you Kylene. Happy trails!

It’s also a good way to save on the energy to cook 2 full separate meals.. just the added cost of warming up the second meal!
@@Jennifermcintyre Yes, indeed!

Some very good ideas, thank you 👍
Great video. Lots of usable information. 😊

I freeze dry the poultry skins for my dogs…..they LOVE it!!!
Wow, great idea and I need to try that.
I'll have to try that. I dehydrate beef liver treats for my dogs. That's all the snacks they eat.
These are really good tips. I don't have a freeze dryer, but maybe I'll save up for one. Your food looks delicious. Diane
Wonderful suggestions.
Great tips, thanks!

That’s awesome!!!
Which is better to do freeze dried or dehydrated? I don’t know which to save money for.
Dehydrator is less then $100, freeze drier is $1500.
I got a dehydrator

I have taken lots of vegetables and dehydrated them and used them for soups. Thank you for sharing these ideas
Thanks for sharing your years of experience.
Thanks
Fermenting/pickling is one of my favorite ways to deal with mass quantities of something.
How to reduce waste? Don't eat at restaurants, eat at home. Make simple meals. Enjoy simplicity. Soup can save the world.

I took a ham we had for new years day. And refroze it to use it for a potato soup we are having ar some point.
When you make your bread into croutons the way you just said how do you store it and how long will they last those sound good😊
You can store them in an airtight container and they’ll be good for a couple weeks, but not longer than that they never last that long at our house

So how much parmesan cheese and oil and butter do you use

Make banana bread from left over bananas. Surely the electricity freeze drying them isn’t worth the expense for a few left over bananas

Freeze it solid on a baking sheet first and then put it in the container. That way you can take out what you need.
@@TheProvidentPrepper Thank you!
I also dehydrate bananas for a snack 😋😋😋🤤🤤🤤🤤
I peel the bananas. Then throw the peels in the compost bin. No waste.
You give the chicken skin to the dog because you have never made skin chips before. Once you do your dogs won’t get another bite lol 😂
😢I love banana but are allergic to them
Did you know that you can cook and eat your banana peels? There are all kinds of recipes on RUclips.
I make vinegar with miny
Banana peel curry
Own a pig. They eat anything
Don't freeze things in plastic bags.
Spending $3k on a freeze dryer to save some brown bananas is hardly a way to save money.

That is true. But I do lots more that bananas in my freeze dryer. Leftovers, soups, elderberry syrup mix, and so much more.
Plus the electricity
